Triple Pork Mazeman with Roasted Garlic & Pea Tips
Piri-Piri Chicken with Coconut Smashed Plantains & Steward Collard Greens
Spring Casserole with Fennel, Asparagus & Golden Raisins
This is a review of the 9th Blue Apron subscription box we have received. This box was disappointing so much so that I've paused my subscription. Out of the three dishes, I'd say the Spring Casserole takes first place, followed by the Piri-Piri Chicken and last goes to the Triple Pork Mazeman dish.
Triple Pork Mazeman with Roasted Garlic & Pea Tips
Wow, they only provided us with five ounces of pork for two people and that's before cooking shrank it! They should have sent us double that quantity or at least eight ounces! Very few bites had any pork in it. Also, they sent only one piece of bacon! So disappointing! We only ate it because we were hungry and didn't want it to go to waste. The garlic chives were so stinky, they smelled like dirty socks! I will never cook with them again. The house smelled really bad after cooking them.
Piri-Piri Chicken with Coconut Smashed Plantains & Steward Collard Greens
Here we go again, they shipped a tiny amount of protein. They sent us two very small chicken thighs with the bone attached. We never tried plantains before, so this recipe was one I was looking forward to trying. The mashed plantains with lime & coconut milk were very good, but that was the only part that was enjoyable. I don't understand why they can't send coconut milk in a can rather than powder form. I really don't like milk that has been processed into powder, that's not healthy! We left the table unsatisfied and without full bellies.
Spring Casserole with Fennel, Asparagus & Golden Raisins
Since the other two dishes were disappointing, we were discouraged and put off making this recipe and ordered takeout instead. So I made this one for my lunches instead. This dish actually had enough for three lunches or two very large dinners. I would prefer this dish as a side, it just isn't satisfying all by itself. It was tasty, but I'm sick of them sending fennel. They have been repeating vegetables way too much lately. The raisins were very sweet in this dish. The béchamel sauce was surprisingly easy to make, but I had to cook it a couple minutes longer than the recipe called for. I baked this one in our oven safe pan so I had less dishes to clean. A lot of these recipes leave you with many dirty pans, pots, bowls, baking dishes, cutting boards, etc so I'm always trying to make less dirty dishes whenever possible.
Lots of people are complaining on their Facebook page about the quantity of protein they have been sending lately. The pork, beef, turkey, steak and chicken has been too little to be satisfying. They have also been repeating vegetables lately such as fennel, radish, fingerling potatoes, asparagus, beets, pea tips, snap peas, cabbage and pickled vegetables. They haven't sent me any of my favorites such as zucchini, squash or eggplant. I've placed my subscription on pause as a result. I'm going to pay more attention to their future recipes and read how much they will be sending before ordering.
