Ruby Wing Color Changing Nail Polish in Poppy

Inside in Daylight

Outdoors in Direct Sunlight

This is a nail polish from Ruby Wing that changes colors when you are in direct sunlight.  I bought this with my reward points from Birchbox online, so it was free.  I looked at blogs to decide which of the colors I would try. When the bottle arrived my reaction was:  oh no, that's way too neon of a pink!   I decided to try it the day it arrived since I heard this product doesn't have a long shelf life (about a year) and I was planning to paint my nails that day anyway.  Thankfully, when the nail polish dries it's not the same color as it is in the bottle. Unfortunately, the indoor photo above does not accurately depict the color.  Indoors it is a bright raspberry color which gets darker at night time.  Step outside into the sunlight and the polish only takes about thirty seconds to start changing it's color.  It darkens to the color you see in the second photo above and mostly stays that color. It can get even darker if you hold your hand still in the sun and then it looks like a very dark brownish purple. This is a really fun polish, but check the weather first because you need direct sunlight without clouds!  The light from my skylights or windows doesn't work because the glass has a UV filter on it.  After a couple of days it started showing tip wear due to lots of typing. I used one coat of Perfect Formula's Manicure Booster, two coats of Poppy, one coat of Manicure Booster and one coat of Seche Vite.  I'd suggest using a different top coat than Seche Vite on this one, since it shrunk some on a couple of nails.  It took a little longer than other polishes to dry and was prone to smudging, so make sure you can just sit for forty-five minutes to an hour after painting your nails.  Also, be careful to completely cover the first coat with your second coat or the first coat will stick out since it will be a slightly different color. I'm really anxious to get my hands on some of the nail polishes that change color due to temperature changes. If you have any recommendations on a good one, please comment below!

There are many manicures and nail polishes featured on this blog, so feel free to browse around and check them out.  Or check out my Pinterest Manicure Board and click on the photos to read my blog post on each one.  Over on the right side of this blog it shows you the top ten most viewed posts of the week.  Also, there is a little search box over there on the right that you can use to find stuff you are interested in.  You can follow this blog via Pinterest, Twitter, Google +, Bloglovin', email, or Friend Connect.  The choice if yours!  Subscribers & comments welcome and appreciated!

Julep's Warehouse Sale Haul - June 2013

Julep Haul

Swatches - Wendy, Carol, Angelica, Marie & Kylie (in the sunlight)

I purchased all of the above for only $23.00 during the Julep Warehouse Sale on the 17th of June.  Some customers received notification of the sale via email on Saturday while others like myself received that email on Monday.  Thankfully, I found out from other customers about the sale prior to receiving the email before everything was sold out.  I shared information about the sale via Twitter.    You may want to follow me on Twitter to find out about bargains like this one.  Included in my haul  are the following products:
  1. Feet 101 - foot file, Best Pedi Prep Ever, Kylie, toe separators, $6
  2. Sparkle Hair Ties - set of 2, $2 ($6 value)
  3. Rock Candy Collection - Wendy, Carol, Angelica & Marie, $10 ($56 value)
  4. Cabochon Ring - $1 ($14 value)
  5. Pink Body Frosting - $2 ($18 value)
  6. Pomegranate Body Creme - $2 ($18 value)
I look forward to trying the Best Pedi Ever along with the foot file.  Foot files wear out, so I needed a new one. The Kylie nail polish is a magnetic polish and you can see on the swatch above the design it makes when you use a magnet on it.  I used my Nails Inc magnet since this one didn't come with a magnet.  I love magnetic polish, so I look forward to wearing that one in fall since it's more of a fall color.  I can always use more hair ties and these look really pretty.  I had seen the Rock Candy Collection at Sephora and really wanted my namesake polish Wendy and my mother's namesake Carol, but $14 each was way more than I was willing to pay.  So I was really excited to be able to buy them for $2.50 each!  Above you will see the entire collection's swatches each having three coats, except Wendy.  Wendy wasn't an easy polish to work with.  Too much of the polish was traveling to the edges, as you may be able to notice above.  Then the top coat totally ruined it even after waiting several minutes for it to dry.  To fix it I had to add another coat.  Wendy ended up with four coats and it has bubbles in it. So I guess with the Rock Candy collection you have to wait for the polish to dry completely before putting on a top coat which is really inconvenient and it takes a longer time than other polishes to dry.  They are jelly polishes and as a result even after three or four coats you can still see through to your nail underneath. They are great for layering with glitter top coats.  Simply paint one or two coats of the jelly polish, then one coat of a glitter top coat and then another coat of the jelly polish.  This will create an effect that the glitter is floating in between the layers.  You can also use them on top of an opaque polish in a similar color to slightly change the look of the polish underneath or  over a white polish.  The ring isn't of a great quality, so I'm glad I only paid $1 for it.  You paint nail polish on bottom of the cabochon to create a matching ring to your manicure.  I've tried the Pink Body Frosting before in a Maven box and it runs a bit on the greasy side and you have to be careful not to use too much.  I'm looking forward to trying the Pomegranate one this week.  What did you buy in during the sale?

Be Pretty Box by Vitacost - June 2013

This is a box of samples for $13.99 from a company called Vitacost that sells vitamins and organic cosmetics & food, etc.  This is a box that sells out quickly, so I was excited to be able to finally order one.  When it arrived I was sadly disappointed and many other customers felt the same way.  Normally this box has a value of around $70 and this one sadly missed the mark at $10.66 plus the six packet samples.  Included in the box were the following items:
  1. Atopalm - intensive moisturizing cream, .25 fl oz jar, $2.10 value
  2. Burt's Bees - day lotion with clary sage, .25 fl oz jar, $2.30 value
  3. Acure - 100% organic moroccan argan oil,  5 ml , $2.07 value
  4. White Egret - paraffin ear candles, $3.29 value
  5. St. Dalfour - five organic golden mango green tea bags, $0.45 value
  6. St. Dalfour - five organic classic breakfast tea bags, $0.45 value
  7. Earthpaste - natural toothpaste, four sample packets
  8. Sparkle Hearts - body lotion & shampoo, two sample packets
I have received the Atopalm cream before in another subscription box and it's good in the winter since it's very thick.  It's just ok, not a brand I would chose.  Hubby loves the Burt's Bees moisturizing lotion which I received in another subscription box in a full size.  I have lots of argan oil, so that one wont be used anytime soon.  I've been receiving so many samples of that oil from various brands in the past year.  I really don't like how oily it is and how long it takes to sink into the skin, so that's not something I would purchase either.  I'm not daring enough to try those ear wax cleaning candles, perhaps hubby will try them.  I have way too many tea bags, so I didn't need anymore.  Not crazy about trying a new tooth paste, but I'll give it a try.  The lotion & shampoo packets are labeled for little girls.

I received a refund for this box, since I notified them by email that I was upset about the low value of this box.  I have always received excellent customer service from this company which I purchase vitamins, Veggie Wash and rice & oat flour from.  I wont be purchasing anymore of their sample boxes.  They also have excellent prices. So I do recommend giving them your business.  If you would like $10 off your first purchase of $30 or more, click here.

Remember memorizing the colors of the rainbow in school?  Easy way is ROY G BIV which stands for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.  Well that's how I decided to organize my nail polish collection minus the mini nail polishes I own.  This makes it easy to check if I have already bought a polish or to find a color I need for nail art.  I also like to see collections organized by brands and then colors, but that would be too time consuming for me when searching for a color.  Included in my collection are the following nail polishes (click on highlighted ones to see a photo of the manicure using them):

I have two rows left to fill and I've told myself that as soon as they are filled up, I will not be purchasing anymore nail polish.  So, I'll have to be very picky about what polishes I purchase in the future!  Yep, I'm currently addicted to collecting nail polish!  As soon as I decide to stop collecting one thing, I move on to another.  I have collected in the past stuffed animals, Breyer model horses, thimbles, postage stamps from around the world, Cabbage Patch Kids, Barbies, miniature airplane models, dog figurines, Boyds Bears, Annette Funicello Bears, Beanie Babies, Hallmark ornaments, Murano Glass and Lladro.  What have you collected over the years?

I bought these nail polish racks from Amazon.com.  If you would like to purchase this nail polish rack, click here. It's the cheapest I have found anywhere!  Reading blogs really pays off, because one of my favorite bloggers was able to find this bargain for me.  To see her nail racks, click here.

Big Brother 15 - House Tour, New Twists & Rumors

Big Brother 15 House Tour

So are you excited for Big Brother 15 that starts in a week?  Well I am, so I did some research for you to give you the current information that is out there, so you don't have to search for it.  First start with the house tour above.  Isn't the set cool?  I love the 60's, aviation theme!  Second, there will be three nominations for eviction instead of two this year.  Third, the fans will vote for the "Most Valuable Player" aka MVP, you can check out the cast and vote starting tomorrow here.  This is an attempt to keep any of the cast from becoming "floaters".  Do you think that will work, or will we still see floaters?  I think we will continue to see floaters!  Forth, there is a rumor that the sister of past winner Rachel, Elissa Reilly will be playing this season.  You can check out Elissa's twitter feed here.  If it's true, it will be interesting to see how much she's like her sister.  The other rumor, there may be other relatives, ex-girlfriends or boyfriends of past cast members joining also.  Thankfully, no returning cast members this year.  In addition, there will be a larger cast of sixteen and the show will run longer this year. You have until the 25th of this month to sign up for the live feeds at a 20% discount.  Unfortunately, this year Big Brother After Dark on Showtime is being replaced by two hours on TVGN, channel 273 on Directv.  It's not in high definition and it may be live or not, they aren't being clear about that. My guess is since there could be a chance that there will be cursing and nudity, that this will not be a live feed.  So be sure not to miss the party starting Wednesday, June 26th at 8 pm on CBS!  Don't be late!  Thereafter, come back to this blog for updates on what happens overnight on Big Brother.  Big Brother will air on CBS Tuesdays at 9 pm, Wednesdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 8 pm EST.

Update - check out the cast interviews here and the cast photos here and don't forget to vote!  Who are you picking as MVP?  I'm not sure yet, will be checking out the interviews first.  Also, check out a live chat with Rachel Reilly here and an interview with Julie Chen here.

My first impressions from the interviews:

Nick -  will win stuff, may go far in the game, very involved in alliances and deciding their game play, kind of a Dan player.  He should be entertaining but I probably wont like him.

Spencer - will play like the chef Joe did last season, in an alliance part time, he will be used and manipulated and a floater.

Jessie - will play like Jordan, perhaps entertaining, will make it close to the end, wont win much, uses men to win.

Kaitlin -  strong player like Rachel winning competitions and HOH (without crying) and she should be entertaining when playing the boys for fools.  I like her.

Jeremy - the funny one and going after the girls, reminds me of Jeff.  He will go far, maybe win.  I like him.

Helen - the rich, educated one reminds me of Shelley, but wont be as entertaining or last as long.

Elissa - Rachel's sister.  She's not going to be anywhere as good as a player as her sister.  Maybe entertaining with alcohol, otherwise annoying.  Don't think she'll last long and will be embarrassed that she was sent home so fast unless she wins MVP all the time which Rachel fans could easily do.  I'm a Rachel fan, but wont be voting for her sister.

Amanda - the liar and back stabber using her looks which may be entertaining.  She will stick around awhile.

Candice - seeking a boyfriend to manipulate and make him do all the work, seems boring and possibly irritating. Probably gone in the beginning or 1/2 the way.

McCrae - going after the ladies, yeah right LOL, could be very boring & irritating and he wont last long, floater. They will make fun of him behind his back like Ian.

Judd - could be really entertaining if given alcohol.  Hope he loses his temper, bring on the drama! I like him. Reminds me of Frank & Howie.  I like him and he'll be very involved in the alliances and their actions, but he'll be stabbed in the back at least once.

Howard - winner of competitions and a target for elimination, strong alliance is crucial to stay.

GinaMarie - could be irritating if she's not involved in the drama and alcohol, don't think she'll last long.  Reminds me of JoJo.

David - could be entertaining, will win some stuff and hide behind an alliance other times, may be a player like Shane.

Andy - wont win anything, floater, will make it half way after the two alliances are done using him.

Aaryn - boring, wont win anything, out quickly unless she nabs an alliance leader as a boyfriend and then she'll play like Britney or Jordan.

My first impression favorites - Kaitlyn, Jeremy & Judd.  Least interesting players - Aaryn, Candice, GinaMarie & McCrae.  Guess to win - Nick, Kaitlyn or Jeremy.  I'll be voting Jeremy for MVP.  Comment below with  your favorites, guesses on who will win and who gets your MVP vote.

Ipsy - June 2013

This is a monthly cosmetic subscription service called Ipsy for $10 with free shipping.  Their name use to be My Glam.  Included in the June bag were the following items:
  1. BaubleBar - O-Ring stud wrap adjustable bracelet in coral, $18 value
  2. Cosmetic Bag in leopard with lime trim
  3. J Cat Beauty - Sparkling Cream Palette in SCP106 Volta, $4.49 value
  4. NYX - cream blush in CB02 Natural, $6 value
  5. Cailyn - Line-Fix Gel Eyeliner in purple, $21 value
  6. Starlooks - Lip Pencil in K308 Bare, $12 value
  7. Chella - Ivory Lace Highlighter, $18 value
I received the bracelet as an extra since I referred two people to Ipsy.  At first I thought the sparkling palette was eyeshadow, but when I looked it up online it said not to be used on the eyes.  I think that would be better suited for someone younger than I, so I will be selling that one. I'm not very good at applying cream blush, so that one will be up for sale on my Blog Sale also.  I look forward to trying the eyeliner since I have not tried a gel one before and I like purple eyeliner on my eyes.  I don't have any need for a lip liner since that's a step I skip.  I also don't need a highlighter, I use eyeshadow for that.  This month's bag is really cute.  I preferred last month's bag, since this month there is only one item I plan to use.  Ipsy currently has a wait list to become a subscriber. That isn't surprising since it only costs $10 and this month it was over $60 in value, not including the $18 extra and the bag.  To sign up now, click here.

Beauty Box by Target - Spring 2013

First Edition Beauty Box by Target

This is a new box that Target offered for sale about six weeks ago.  It was worth the wait since this  box was only $5 with free shipping!  I'm hoping they will decide to do this subscription monthly, but I suspect it will be quarterly.  The card that it came with says they are working on the second edition, but there is no expected date listed.  Come on Target give up the info!  Included in this first box were the following products:
  1. Gillette - Venus & Olay Razor Pack, includes razor and one blade, full sized
  2. La Roche-Posay - Effaclar Duo acne treatment, sample packet
  3. L'Oreal Magic - Skin Beautifier BB Cream in light, sample packet
  4. Sally Hansen - Salon Effect Real Nail Polish Strips 470 Lust-rous, full sized
  5. Fekkai - Glossing Styling Cream, 2 oz deluxe travel size
  6. Target Coupon - $3 off $15 beauty purchase, code for online use "BEAUTYBOX"
I have used Gillette razors before and will continue to use them in the future, I recommend them.  I don't have acne, so I have no use for that one.  Anyone that places a Blog Sale order and wants that as a freebie, just let me know.  I received a free full sized version of the BB cream and it did not match my skin tone, so I had to throw it away.  I really don't see the point of using a BB cream and foundation, so I'm just not in the market for one.  Now a CC cream I am interested in since it doesn't have temporary results, but I have yet to find one that matches my extremely fair skin.  If you know of one, please comment below.  I'll be giving that sample away also.  I've been wanting to try the Sally Hansen nail strips, but this one is black with gold and silver glitter which is best suited for winter or fall.  Since it's summer, I'll save that for fall.  The best brand I have tried so far is Incoco. Just remember not to take them out of the package till the moment you are ready to use them since they are made of real nail polish and will dry out when exposed to air.  I occasionally treat myself to some of the Fekkai brand at Costco.  It's a brand I really love, but find too expensive for year round use.  Hubby or I will be enjoying the styling cream soon.  For those of you that received this box, be sure to use the coupon before it expires on the 22nd which is only a few days away!  If you received this box, comment below which nail strip design you received and if you're happy with your box.  There are many subscription box reviews on this blog, feel free to browse around and check them out.

Birchbox - June 2013

June 2013 Birchbox & Free Ruby Wing Poppy Nail Polish

Above you will see a photo of my Birchbox for June and the Ruby Wing color changing nail polish that I received for free with one hundred of my reward points.  Birchbox is a monthly cosmetic sample subscription service for $10 per month including shipping.  With each review you write and with each purchase you receive reward points. When you accumulate one hundred points you get $10 off any product in their store.  I picked an item that had free shipping also, and since the nail polish was $10, with my reward points it was free.  Included in June's box were the following products:
  1. Mirenesse - Glossy Kiss Lipstick in Cheeky Kiss, full-size, value $26.55
  2. Kerastase - Chroma Thermique Protect styling aid protects hair from UV rays, 2 sample packs
  3. Coola - SPF 30 Cucumber Moisturizer for Face, apply an hour before going in the sun, sample tube
  4. Color Club - Reign in Spain, mini size, value $4
  5. Tweezerman - Matchbox Itty Bitty Nail Files, value $5
Wow, the retail value on the lipstick is really high.  I would never spend that much on a lipstick!  Never heard of that brand before and wonder where they sell it.  I'll be putting that up for sale on my Blog Sale, since I have too many lip glosses and lipsticks and already have a similar color.  I'll try the styling gel and see if it's ok, but I'm quite fussy since my hair is very thin and fine.  Perhaps I'll give them to hubby instead.  I'll hang onto the sunscreen for the next time I'm in the sun for a long period of time.  I look forward to wearing the nail polish since I have a couple of dresses that have a coral print on them that it would match well.  I'll be selling the nail files on my Blog Sale also since I use only a crystal file on my nails.  This is a pretty good box this month, since anytime I receive a nail polish I'm usually happy. I still think Ipsy is a better value.  What's your favorite subscription service?  I'll be sharing a review of the Ruby Wing nail polish very soon since I'm wearing it now. There are many monthly box subscription services reviewed on this blog, so feel free to browse around and take a look.

Illamasqua Radium Manicure

Illamasqua Radium - photo taken in the sunlight

This is a nail polish made in Australia called Illamasqua and this color is called Radium.  It's looks lighter in the sunlight or artificial light than it does in indoor light.  Inside it has more of an olive tone to it and it looks really retro and reminds me of a green color very popular in the 70's.  This polish was so difficult to apply since it was so thin and was drying before I was able to even apply three stokes to one nail! Also the brush wasn't perfectly straight and that made it made it very challenging to get a perfect edge near the cuticle. It was really frustrating and it even didn't play well with the top coats.  I used Perfect Formula's Manicure Booster as a base & top coat and then Seche Vite on top along with two coats of Radium.  This is the first time I have tried this brand and I'm wondering if the other colors are also hard to apply.  Have you tried this brand before and how was application for you?  I received two compliments the first day I wore it out and about.  It's a really pretty color.  I tried to get a photo that shows the olive appearance indoors, but I wasn't able to.  This color is described as "acidic lime, shimmer finish" on their website.  The shimmer is barely noticeable and this polish lasted eight days before having issues on the tips.

Influenster - Spring Fever VoxBox

This is a complementary box from Influenster.  Included in the box were the following products:
  1. Schwarzkopf Professional - OSiS Gelastic ultra strong flex gel for a firm finish + $5 off coupon
  2. Secret - Outlast Clear Gel Antiperspirant Deodorant
  3. NYC New York Color - Applelicious Glossy Lip Balm
  4. Tastykake - Kandy Bar Kakes S'mores
  5. Broadway Nails - imPRESS Press-on Manicure
The hair gel is too strong of a hold for my fine, straight hair, but hubby loves it and it works great on his short, wavy, thick hair.  I may land up buying more of the hair gel for hubby when he runs out since he's still happy with it after using it for a week and he's very fussy about his hair styling products.  I use to only use the Secret brand, but lately I've been using Dove.  The Secret brand is a reliable one, which I recommend.  The Big Apple Red lip balm goes on red and it's glossy.  It's very moisturizing and has a nice fresh scent.  It has a cute apple design on the top created by two shades of the red lip balm.  I haven't tried TastyKake in many, many years and have only started seeing it in stores again lately.  It's yummy, but high in calories, this one being 260 calories.  I try to keep my snacks around only 100-150 calories, so this isn't one I'd purchase for myself.  Also, I prefer the flavor of their Butterscotch Krimpets.  The press on nails are really pretty, but they are too short for my long nails.  I'm not going to shorten my nails just to wear them and I'm not a fan on press on nails.  Anything artificial makes me irritable and I just land up yanking them off, so I don't bother anymore.  That's why I prefer my natural nails that grow nice and long thanks to the Biotin supplements I take daily.  I need to pass the press on nails to someone who uses that type of nails.  This was a fun box filled with two brands I had purchased in the past and three I had heard of but never purchased before.  Did you receive a Influenster box lately?  If you would like to join Influenster, I'll send you an invite if you email me.  To check out the last one I received, click here.

PopSugar - May 2013

This is a monthly subscription box from a company called PopSugar.  It's normally $35 a box and suppose to be worth around $100, but I used a coupon so that it only cost me $17.50 with free shipping.  I read many reviews via blogs and YouTube and thought some of the boxes were great and some were so so for the price.  So when I saw there was a coupon that reduced the price in half, I decided it was worth a try.  Included in this box were the following products:
  1. PopSugar bag
  2. The Modern Margarita - set of five margarita mixes and rim salt
  3. Pacifica Natural Color Quench Lip Tint
  4. The Original Beauty Blender & Cleanser
  5. Questions I Ask When I Want To Talk About Myself Deck - cards in a written by Mindy Kaling
  6. Way Better Snacks - sweet potato chips
  7. Charm & Chain - $30 gift card
  8. Kooringal Giselle Mid Brim Hat
I certainly didn't need another shopping bag and I prefer those that are larger and are insulated to keep food cold since I live in the south.  I'm excited to try the different flavors of margaritas and waiting for a hot day to try them out.  I'm not crazy about lip stains, I'm more into lip gloss, so that one is up for sale on my Blog Sale.  I've heard so many good reviews on the Beauty Blender, that I just have to try it out for myself though it does look more time consuming than the Tarte brush I currently use for my foundation.  I needed more brush cleanser, so that will come in handy.  I don't watch the tv show that Mindy is in so I'm not a fan and as a result that one is also up for sale on my Blog Sale.  The sweet potato chips were delicious and I'm keeping an eye out to find more in stores locally.  The Charm & Chain store is quite expensive, items on sale are at least twice the value of the gift card, so I'll just have to keep checking back to find something I like before the expiration date of December. While my parents are British, being raised in the states I'm just not into hats.  The hat is also for sale on my Blog Sale.  My parents were always bugging me to wear hats to protect my fair skin, but all the begging didn't work!  I really like the rim since it's moldable.  If you would like to subscribe to this box, use coupon code "REFER5" for $5 off and click here.  What's your favorite monthly subscription box?  There are lots of monthly box reviews on this blog, so feel free to browse around and check them out.

Pegasus Hare Polish Manicure

This manicure features a polish called Pegasus from an Indie polish called Hare Polish.  It has a lilac jelly base with silver glitter pieces that feature large octagon, medium dots and very small dots.  I used three coats over a base coat of Perfect Formula's Manicure Booster and used it also as a top coat plus  Seche Vite top coat to help it dry quickly.  I also added another coat of Seche Vite several days later since I needed it to last longer than seven days due to vacationing with Hubby and not having the time to do another manicure.  It lasted eleven days and if I added another top coat it would have probably lasted another couple days. The glitter on the sides started to snag stuff, but a top coat would solve that issue.   You could get away with two coats if you don't mind seeing a bit of your nail underneath or by using an opaque lilac polish as the first coat.  The glitter didn't curl, so there wasn't an issue with it snagging anything as long as you used enough top coat.  It's a really pretty polish that looks good in any light.  It's really easy to get super close to the cuticle line and that's the look I prefer.  I know some people prefer to see a line of no polish between the cuticle and the polish, but for me that just looks like your manicure is a week old.  This polish took a half hour to remove, so I would highly recommend using one coat of a opaque lilac polish first then only one or two coats of Pegasus on top.  Check out my polish haul from Hare Polish here.  There are many other manicures featured on this blog, feel free to browse around.  What's your favorite Indie polish?
