Small Cheese Pizza with Portobello Mushrooms - $9.99

Small Cheese Pizza with Italian Sausage - $8.95

This is a review of a restaurant franchise called Mellow Mushroom and specifically for the location in downtown Winston Salem, North Carolina. They started in 1974 and now have many locations in the United States, the majority of them being located in the southeast. We have visited three locations in North Carolina so far: Raleigh, Cary and Winston Salem. Each time we have enjoyed our pizza and our dining experience. Our only complaint is that the Raleigh location isn't cool enough during the hottest summer months. Perhaps they have fixed their air conditioning since we were there.

We arrived at the downtown Winston Salem location around 2:30 pm last Sunday. Parking is mostly on the street which requires parallel parking and on weekdays you'll need quarters for the meter. Their sanitation rating is currently 94.5%. We were immediately seated in the requested booth. They have many booths, but mostly tables. On warm days they open the doors so that part of the indoor seating then becomes outdoor seating. Shortly after, our waitress arrived and took our drink orders which she immediately fulfilled and delivered to our table. She then took our lunch order. She was very attentive and friendly during our stay.

Our pizzas arrived thirteen minutes later and they were nice and hot. I ordered a small cheese pizza with Italian sausage and note that in the photo above the cheese is stringy on top because I almost forgot to take a picture prior to eating it. So I picked up the slice and quickly put it back when Hubby reminded me to take a photo. It had been so long since I had been to a Mellow Mushroom restaurant that I was rather anxious to taste my pizza. Long strings of cheese extend from the pizza when you pick up your slice. My mouth is watering just thinking about this pizza. It's so delicious! The cheese and sauce are the perfect amount and the crust is buttered and sprinkled with parmesan cheese. The crust isn't too thick nor too thin, it's perfect. The dough they use is unlike any other I have tried. It has the perfect crunch on the outside and it's chewy in the inside. It doesn't have any greasiness which is a must for me, otherwise my stomach would be in great distress. I remember the Italian sausage being more flavorful and larger pieces of it at the Cary location. It's probably been two years since I was there, so maybe my memory is failing me. Hubby ordered a small cheese pizza with portobello mushrooms on it. He enjoyed it, but he'd probably been better off with sausage instead. Even the small pizzas are large enough for leftovers. You'll be able to save about one quarter to half of your pizza for a snack or another meal unless you are really hungry.

The prices are reasonable, a small pizza is $8.00 and toppings ranging from $.95-$1.90. Soda is $1.95. They also have many specialty pizzas to chose from. I had a email coupon for a free small pizza with the purchase of a pizza, so that's why we both ordered small pizzas. Sign up for their emails, so that you can get some occasional coupons. The receipt also has a coupon for $5 off if you complete the survey. I've heard that their salads, subs and appetizers are really good too. In addition, they serve a wide variety of beer. They also offer carry-out and if I lived nearby I'd be a regular customer for sure. I'd also frequent the Winston Salem location if there was more parking. Each location has lots of artwork on the walls and the decor at the Cary location is my favorite. I highly recommend you give this restaurant a try at your nearest location.

What, no Krispy Kreme? 😀 If you are ever in Statesville, try Amalfi's! My husband lives in Statesville and we try to go there when I go up to visit him (I live in GA).
