This is a review of our 14th shipment from a subscription box called Home Chef. Our favorite recipe this week was the Thai Pork Lettuce Wraps which was a repeat recipe that we had back in June. This is one of our favorite Home Chef recipes so far.
Peppercorn Crusted Bacon Wrapped Sirloin with Smoky Summer Vegetable Hash
We were really looking forward to this recipe since the last time we had sirloin steak from Home Chef it was awesome. This time around it wasn't as good. It was still pretty good, but a bit tough and the summer vegetables hash was really delicious. This recipe took around 40 minutes to make and had 624 calories. It was the perfect portion.
Thai Pork Lettuce Wraps with Water Chestnuts & Sesame Dipping Sauce
This is a recipe we had already tried back in June. We loved it so much we were anxious to make it again. At first glance the lettuce looked like it was in excellent shape but once Hubby started taking it apart there were brown parts on the crunchy parts of the lettuce. So we couldn't use those parts, and those are the best pieces for this dish due to the crunch. They were still very enjoyable but the wraps had to be eaten with a fork and knife since the lettuce that was left couldn't hold the weight of the food. The Asian Dipping Sauce they provide is so delicious. This dish took about 30 minutes to cook and had about 624 calories. This was a very generous portion.
Peachy Lychee Smoothie
I always look forward to their smoothies, but lately the ones that have peaches in it don't arrive in good condition. I wish they would provide fresh peaches rather than what looks like canned which they claim are frozen. Usually their frozen fruit survives shipping but their peaches never arrive in good shape. You can see the brown parts in the picture above. I cut those parts off and then added some nectarine from my fruit basket to make up for it. I've never had lychee before, these are canned. When we make smoothies on our own, we never used canned fruit, sometimes frozen, but we keep it frozen which makes the smoothie thicker and colder. Not sure I like lychee, it smelled strange to me. I'm told it smells floral. I like floral tea, but not sure about floral smoothies. This recipe mostly tasted like the pineapple juice. I'd say this was my least favorite smoothie of theirs so far, but it may be due to having to substitute a nectarine for the peaches. This recipe had 319 calories and took only a few minutes to prepare.
Fruit Basket
Included in this basket were 2 Australian Tangerines, 2 Nectarines, 1 Golden Delicious Apple, 2 Pink Lady Apples, 1 Grapefruit & 1 Orange. Everything was ripe and ready to eat except the nectarines which were ready to eat a few days later after sitting out on the counter. My favorite is always the grapefruit which is perfectly ripe and delicious. Second favorite is the nectarines, followed by the tangerines. I get a bit tired of the apples since there are so many in each shipment and I usually have some left after the week is over. I wish they would change those out every week or so.
We also purchased Spinach Stuffed Chicken with Lemony Roasted Cauliflower, but the chicken went bad prior to making it, so I don't have recipe results for that yet. This was one of the least exciting boxes we have received from Home Chef. This week we received a box from Hello Fresh and I'll review that in a few days. It's been really enjoyable so far.
