Fresh Fruit Basket with Nectarines, Apples & Citrus

This is a review of the fifth delivery we have received from a subscription box called Home Chef. The total for all of the food shown above was $79.50. The dinners cost $9.95, smoothies $4.95 & the fruit is $4.95 per serving. While that may seem expensive at first glance, we are actually spending less than we use to! Our meals are planned for us and they send us the exact quantities of the ingredients we need, so there is no waste and the best part is we are eating exciting restaurant quality food! We have tried the competition: Hello Fresh, Blue Apron & Plated and Home Chef is currently our favorite. Why you ask? Well they have ten dinner recipes to chose from, three of which are vegetarian, one breakfast, one smoothie and one fruit basket. What a great selection! Also, their recipes use some hard to find ingredients but aren't so strange you are afraid to try them. Plus, the recipes are easier and quicker to make most of the time compared to their competition. In addition, they consistently place ice packs below and above the meat and seafood which their competition fails to do sometimes. If you subscribe to a dinner subscription box, which one is your favorite?

This week our favorite dish was the Thai Pork Lettuce Wraps, followed by the Sherry Mushroom Chicken and lastly the Beef & Cheese Enchiladas. Here's a breakdown of our experience with these recipes:

Thai Pork Lettuce Wraps with Water Chestnuts and Sesame Dipping Sauce

Oh my, was this delicious! It has to be one of my favorite meals ever! It was complete perfection! I wish I knew where they got their sauces so I could make this again very soon. It was also easier to make than it looked. Hubby wanted more pork, but I was full and very happy. Fourteen ounces is enough, sometimes Hubby eats too much, another reason this service is great because there are no second helpings. This is a meal we would have easily overeaten, if it had been left up to us since it was so tasty. This recipe took about thirty minutes to prepare and had 624 calories.

Sherry Mushroom Chicken in a Baby Bella Cream Sauce & Quinoa

Wow, the sauce on the chicken was delicious! That's a sauce we plan to make again in the future. Also, the chicken was so tender and moist. I'm not a fan of baking chicken since it usually dries it out. They had us cook it in the pan with sherry first for three minutes per side and that made all the difference. We will use this technique again in the future for sure. The quinoa on the other hand didn't turn out ok. Maybe it needed longer cooking time or soaking first, I'm not sure what happened. So we didn't enjoy that part since it was a bit tough in texture and the vegetable buillon made it so salty. This recipe took about thirty-five minutes and had 778 calories.

Beef & Cheese Enchiladas with Sour Cream, Sweet Corn & Chihuahua Cheese

This was the first time we had made enchiladas and I must admit I was a bit nervous about it, but they turned out good. I would have preferred less spice, I think maybe half of the jalapeño would have made all the difference. The chihuahua cheese was especially yummy. I appreciate that they had shredded it for us so that was one less step and saved us time. This was a generous portion which I couldn't finish. It took about thirty minutes and had 875 calories.

Green Monster Smoothies with Avocado, Granny Smith Apple & Kiwi

We use to make lots of smoothies, but got out of the habit of it when we moved and shoved the Vitamix in a cabinet to be forgotten. So I was really happy to hear that Home Chef was going to provide the ingredients and recipes for smoothies which would help us get back into the habit of making healthy smoothies. We have made smoothies with a lot of different fruits and vegetables over the years but never with avocado or kiwi, so I was looking forward to tasting it. This recipe was a bit on the tart side and while the kiwi flavor was coming through I didn't really taste the avocado. I'm not sure if it's worth the calories since the avocado flavor wasn't coming through. Maybe a bit of Stevia, honey or some greek yogurt would have helped the tartness. I still enjoyed it since I've never met a smoothie I didn't like. Just remember if you come up with a combination you don't like, just add some apple to it and that will solve the flavor issue. This smoothie had 310 calories and took about ten minutes to prepare.

Fresh Fruit Basket with Nectarines, Apples & Citrus

Included in the fruit basket were two nectarines, two clementines, two pink lady apples, one golden delicious apple, one grapefruit and one orange. The nectarines didn't arrive ripe, but after a couple days sitting out they ripened. I like ordering this because I hate shopping for fruit and then when you get to the checkout they usually don't know how to ring it up and it's always a delay. So this is great having them send me a little of this and a little of that and they have made the decision for me what fruit looks good that week.

Well there you have it, another delightful week of food from Home Chef. We are really looking forward to the next two weeks since the menus are wonderful. One of the weeks Hubby chose three different dinners than I did, so we will be getting five recipes instead of three to make us both happy. There were so many appetizing meals we just couldn't decide on just three. Next Wednesday we are expecting the following:
  1. Pimenton Herb Butter Sirloin Steak with Sweet Potato Piquillo Hash
  2. Mushroom and Swiss Beef Burger with Steak Fries and Homemade Black Truffle Aioli
  3. Portobello Fajita Tacos with Roasted Poblano Beans & Lime Crema
  4. Citrus Green Supercharger Smoothies with Avocado, Granny Smith Apple & Kale
  5. Fresh Fruit Basket with Nectarines, Apples & Fresh Citrus
