Pistachio Cannoli & Baklava - $3.50 + $3.00
This is a review of a new local bakery and cafe located in Cary, North Carolina called Asali. It's located off Rt. 64 near Rt. 1 in the MacGregor Village Shopping Center. It's recently been renovated, so it's more attractive now. We visited on a rainy Saturday at around 3 pm. They had a few customers and we were served right away. I expected more of a selection of baked goods. Some of the items didn't have a price tag which I found annoying. Pointing at items that I don't know the name of and asking how much they are shouldn't be necessary. I can't be bothered with that! They had a few coffee options and self serve free water in a tiny plastic cup. Why bother offering free water in a cup the size of a mouthwash cup! Water isn't expensive so I found that irritating. Since I'm not a coffee drinker and they don't have tea to go, water was my only choice. They have a few tables and plastic chairs inside and there are a few tables outside provided by the shopping center. I didn't like the feel of the place, the dining area is shaped like an L and it's very narrow. The cases are very tall, so while asking for your dessert you are speaking over it. Their current sanitation score is 95.5.
Hubby decided to try a Cannoli and I chose Baklava. Baklava is normally served with drizzled honey and a sprinkling of chopped pistachio on top with a bit of whipped cream, this one was served without it. It was average, I wouldn't recommend it. I prefer Bosphorus' Baklava. Hubby was stunned that his Cannoli was soggy and lacked flavor. He said it was the worst Cannoli he has ever had. He recommends Bagel Plus' Cannoli in Fuquay Varina instead.
After all the good reviews I read, I was quite surprised by our disappointing experience. We won't be returning. What's your favorite bakery in the Triangle?
