Jamie Bell as his Best Friend/Songwriter
Richard Madden as his Manager
Bryce Dallas Howard as his Mother
Gemma Jones as his Grandmother

Since I'm a long time fan of Elton John when I saw the trailer for this movie I put it at the top of my must-see list. It's listed as a drama and biography. It's two hours and one minute long and it's rated R. Describing this movie in one word, sad. I thought it would be a fun movie after watching the trailer. Check it out:

Instead, the movie mostly showed all of the sadness in his life including toxic parents, a manager who used him, loneliness, hiding his homosexuality, addiction to drugs and alcohol, depression and even attempted suicide. If these are triggers for you, I recommend you skip this movie. They did a really good job of making the audience feel his pain. You'll need a couple of tissues, I heard ladies nearby crying several times. I had to work really hard at not crying and I put on loud happy music when I drove home to get out of the sadness I felt. While looking up the names of the cast, I was shocked to read that it was Bryce Dallas Howard that played his mother. She's the daughter of Ron Howard. She looked so different, I didn't recognize her. She did an excellent job playing a self-centered, emotionally abusive, unkind and cold mother. There was a lot of singing and dancing which was very entertaining. Taron did a great job acting as Elton, I was a bit nervous he wouldn't nail this performance. My favorite scenes were when he was playing the piano. You'll leave the theatre singing one of his songs for sure. Right before the credits they showed a recent photo of Elton and stated some facts such as he's been sober for 28 years. It would be nice if they made a movie showing those years instead. I'd like to see the happy events in his life. At the end of the movie, some of the audience members clapped which I find rarely happens. They were either clapping due to him being 28 years sober or they really enjoyed the movie, not sure which or perhaps both. Note that this movie is very popular, so check online if there are seats left prior to leaving. Earlier shows are best and you may need to reserve a seat. I only gave this movie three stars out of five stars because it was so sad so I wouldn't watch it again. If you are a long time fan of Elton, you'll want to see it in the theatre otherwise it will be fine to wait until it's released on DVD and on demand. It may be worth watching a 2nd time but fast forwarding through all of the sadness and just watching the singing and dancing. If you've seen this movie, did you expect it to be so sad?

Stay tuned for my next movie review which will be for Ma. Be sure to check out my other movie reviews before you leave. They are all listed on my Pinterest Movie Review BoardI invite you to follow my blog via FacebookPinterestTwitterInstagram or Bloglovin'

The difference vs. BoRhap is Elton is still alive and sober whereas it's been almost 30 yrs since Freddie Mercury died from AIDS.
