This is a review of a new Disney movie that hit theatres November 2nd, 2018 called The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. When I saw the trailer I decided it was one I must see, but I'd skip dragging poor Hubby along. I went to see the bargain matinee show at Stone Theatres which offers movies on Tuesdays for only $5. Check out this trailer to see if this is one you may want to see too:

The beginning was a bit slow as most movies seem to be lately, but hang on cause it's worth the wait. The entire movie is visually entertaining and it takes you on a magical adventure in which you feel like you are dreaming. It's a combination of Walt Disney World's magic with Las Vegas' grandness and wealth. It's a fun ride that I guess young girls from the age of 5 to 15 would really enjoy along with women of all ages who are Disney, The Nutcracker, and ballet fans. While I saw a few men in the audience, I'm sure they were just tagging along for the enjoyment of their beloved female companion. I expected a lot of songs while there were only a couple, singing was absent and the ballet scenes were disappointingly short and few. I think more songs and some singing would have brought it to the level of Mary Poppins so it really lacks in this area of entertainment. Speaking of which, I can't wait to see the new Mary Poppins movie in December! Sadly, I wasn't feeling much Christmas spirit, it mostly takes you along for the adventure ride the main character named Clara takes and at one point there is an out of place circus scene. This movie is only one hour and forty minutes, so it goes by really quickly after the first part which is about ten minutes. If I had rented it or bought it, I would have watched it again to see any parts of the fantastic set that I missed since they are so visually entertaining. Don't leave the theatre during the credits since there is a lovely dance scene that all of the audience stayed for. It seems everyone in the theatre also felt as I did that it ended too soon and they wanted perhaps another adventure scene or ballet scene added to the movie. While watching that dance scene Keira Knightly's name appeared as one of the actors and I was shocked, I didn't recognize her as the Sugar Plum Fairy. Wow, I couldn't figure out who was playing that beautiful character during the movie and I didn't give it much thought since I was so distracted by all the visuals of the set. Wow, they really transformed her into the Sugar Plum Fairy! The costumes were superb and they were another part of the movie that was so entertaining. If I was watching it at home, I would have paused it just to get a better look at several of the wonderful complex costumes and their matching makeup. Not one costume was lacking in its creativity along with the makeup which added to the magic of the movie. As for the actors, I've never seen the one playing Clara nor the Nutcracker before and they did a wonderful job. Keira Knightley had quite a large part which I enjoyed, but I wish Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren had larger parts. If they had shorted the beginning and a few other scenes and added some more scenes with those two actors it would have brought so much more fun to the movie.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed this movie and I recommend it even though I think it missed a few opportunities to been even more magical with the use of it's more experienced actors and with the addition of some singing, more music, and more ballet. I wouldn't hesitate to spend a bit more and see it in the theatre since it's so visually entertaining which is made even more spectacular with the big screen. When available to rent it's also worth renting and watching more than once or buying it for that special little girl in your life who loves watching movies over and over again. Take a tissue with you, there is at least one heartwarming scene you may need it for. One tissue per person should be sufficient. So hop into the car with a young or old friend and head to the theatre to see this movie that will take you on a magical Disney ride without having to drive or fly to Disney World. Enjoy!
