QVC's HomeWorx by Harry Slatkin TSV - Set of Three Candles in Holiday Review

Holiday Set of Three 18 oz. Four-Wick Harry Slatkin Candles

This is a review of a Today's Special Value (TSV) that was available for pre-order on July 10th and was on air on the 15th of July. The pre-order item number is H217805 and it's currently listed under H215969. Its TSV price was $49.84 with free shipping, so each candle was only $16.61. Normally his candles sell on average $20 each plus $5.50 shipping for two so that is $22.75 after shipping which is a savings of $6.14 each or $18.42 for the three candles. This set is currently on sale for $52.32 which is only $2.48 more than the TSV price and it includes shipping! The holiday set includes the following candles:
  1. Frozen Balsam - fir balsam, frosted ozone, bergamot, oak moss, and evergreen
  2. Mistletoe Magic - black currant, pine needles, fir balsam, and pomelo
  3. Winter Hearth - crisp juniper, warmed brandy, incense, and icy spruce
Frozen Balsam reminds me of a combination of Evergreen & Fresh Balsam by Bath & Body Works. It's described as "fresh frozen balsam, oakmoss and mountain evergreen come together to create the perfect tree fragrance capturing a snowy day". I mostly smell the balsam and evergreen with a hint of bergamot. It has a throw of about a 6 out of 10. I really like the scent, I just wish it had more throw. I enjoy Christmas tree scented candles year round. Nothing like a comforting, fresh, clean scent of a Christmas tree when you are sick of the heat and humidity of summer!

Mistletoe Magic smells mostly like currants with a hint of citrus and pine. It's described as "discover the magic of the season with fragrant pine needles, fir balsam, and tart black currants with just a kiss of mistletoe". It has a throw of 2. I had to get right up to it to smell anything, very disappointing.

Winter Hearth is a smoky scent with mostly the scent of brandy and spruce. It's described as "icy spruce and crisp juniper are warmed up with notes of crackling embers to create the perfect winter moment". I'd say it's a bit similar to the Winter candle from Bath & Body Works, but less pungent. I love the Winter candle, but sometimes I find it bit too strong. I have to be in the mood for that one. It's one of my husband's favorites since it's a masculine woody spruce cologne scent. This one has more of a comforting woody, slightly sweet background scent rather than Winter that is so strong that it will get rid of any other scent in your house such as cooking smells, mustiness or wet dogs, etc. It has a throw of 6. I'm really enjoying this one also, but again the throw needs some improvement.

In conclusion, I'm enjoying Winter Hearth & Frozen Balsam, they are tied for first place. If I had to pick one, I'd pick Frozen Balsam with an ever so slight lead. Mistletoe Magic has barely any scent so I'm not a fan. I'm not much into fruit scented candles unless it's blueberry, lemon or banana. These candles pool in about 40-60 minutes, Mistletoe Magic is the slowest. I'm happy that this set isn't as disappointing as the Harvest set I reviewed yesterday, but I'm not happy enough to purchase any more of Harry's candles. Sadly, the price point and the throw are deal breakers for me. I'll stick with Bath & Body Works which I tend to spend around $9-11 per candle after sale prices & coupons. I'm so disappointed since I've been a fan of Harry for years and I loved most of his creations for Bath & Body Works. I thought after all the complaints last year about the lack of throw that when he said he improved this year's throw that I could trust in that, but unfortunately not. They all need more fragrance oils and at this price point, there is no excuse for their lack of throw. If you purchased one of Harry's candles lately let me know which scent and how much of a throw that scent produced below, please. I also purchased the Ceramic Basketweave Pumpkin Candle and it arrived today. The first impression is that it has several quality control issues. Stay tuned for a full review on that candle.

Do you know if qvc did their super Saturday this year? It’s usually a Saturday in the summer but I couldn’t find it this year.

I had the same experience with this Homeworx holiday set. Weak throw, with Mistletoe Magic being the weakest. Very disappointing. I love the Frozen Balsam fragrance but these candles are just not throwing well. I actually found your site while searching for alternatives to Frozen Balsam.
