Resolutions Cravebox - January 2013

Resolutions Cravebox

This is a box from a company called Cravebox for $15 including shipping.  They have a couple themed boxes per month that you can order.  I like them because they are usually $10-15 which is inexpensive and they have lots of samples.  Some of them are full sized samples.  For items that need refrigeration, they will send you a coupon for that product free of charge.  I really like trying new products and this is an easy and inexpensive way to do so. This box has the theme of resolutions, so it's a diet theme basically.  Included in this box were the following:
  1. Wholly Guacamole - coupon for a free product up to $6.50
  2. Weight Watchers Smart Ones - coupon for a free product up to $4.00
  3. Wholly Guacamole chip clip
  4. SunRipe Fruit Source - 4 snack bars
  5. Cocoa Via - sample pack
  6. A & W Ten - 10 calorie root beer
  7. Mary Kay Eye Cream
  8. 7 Up Ten - 10 calorie lemon lime soda
  9. Pantene - moisturizing style mousse
  10. Celestial Wellness Tea
  11. Perfectly Simple - snack bar
I love Wholly Guacamole and it's an item I normally purchase.  It's delicious, you just need to eat it within a day or so because it will go bad after it's opened.  If you are on a diet, the Weight Watchers Smart Ones are a tasty option.  It is processed food, but if you don't have the time to whip up a healthier option, it will help you lose weight since they are very low in calories.  All the of the snack bars were quickly gobbled up by hubby who said they were all very tasty.  The Sun Ripe ones look like a fruit roll up, but in a thick bar version.  He also quickly tried the root beer and was shocked when I told him it was diet.  He said it didn't taste like diet soda. Unfortunately, corn syrup is one of the ingredients, so I wont be purchasing this item.  I refuse to purchase items with corn syrup, it's so bad for you.  He also liked the 7 Up Ten.  I really wish the main manufacturers of soda would start to use Stevia as their sugar substitute.  I heard that one of them was going to, but I've yet to find it on shelves.  I'm guessing it was only available in a test market. I'm willing to pay more for Stevia!  Whole Foods sells Zevia which is a soda that uses Stevia, but the flavor needs improvement.   I use Stevia in my hot tea all the time, it's delicious, sugar & calorie free and healthy. Aspartame is so bad for you, yet sometimes I really crave a soda!  Maybe someday Pepsi & Coca-Cola will start using Stevia, fingers crossed!  I find the Pantene mousse is too moisturizing for my fine thin hair.  If you have dry hair, this will be perfect for you.  I had to reread the directions, because it actually looked like a conditioner that needed to be rinsed out.  It says right on the directions "do not rinse out".  I will pass on the tea since it has green tea in it and I recently discovered that green tea gives me very nasty headaches, so I have to stick to black tea.

So there you have it, my review of one of the Cravebox shipments I received in January.  I will be posting reviews of two more soon.  If you would like to try out Cravebox, visit their website here and let them know I referred you, please.

Birchbox - January 2013

January Shipment from Birchbox

This is a monthly subscription box from Birchbox.  They send beauty samples each month for $10 including shipping.  I had taken a break from it, since I wasn't receiving items from brands that I love.  My rejected sample box was exploding from subscribing to so many monthly subscription boxes.     Time to cancel again, since I'm not crazy about this box.  I like the Juicy perfume, but I received one already for free from Sephora!  The LaraBar is ok, but it's certainly not a beauty product.  The other three products I've never heard of before and I'm not crazy about trying brands I don't know.  This is a great subscription box for those that don't want to spend much and get a little surprise and treat each month.  I'm a bit picky, so this box isn't making me happy.  Included in this box were the following:
  1. Frownies Rose Water Spray
  2. Viva La Juicy Perfume
  3. Model Co Berry Pink Lip Gloss
  4. My Prime - Multi-purpose Mattifying Moisturizer
  5. LaraBar - Cherry Cobbler Bar
If you would like any of these items, check out my Blog Sale, since several will be listed there.  There are several other types of monthly subscription boxes that I review on this blog including:

Sephora Mini Haul - Urban Decay Glinda Palette

Limited Edition Palette Inspired by the Disney Movie:
Oz the Great and Powerful

The Good Witch Glinda - Eye Shadow Palette by Urban Decay
Left to Right starting at the top - Tornado, Aura (violet & rose), Magic, purple 24/7 glide-on eye pencil, Illusion, Oz & South

Sephora Haul - 4 free samples plus the Glinda Palette & Sephora Hair Ties, Glinda Lip Color

This is a mini haul that I received in the mail today from Sephora.  I anxiously awaited the sale of the Glinda Palette and purchased it the day it went on sale online, Sunday.  If you prefer to shop at stores rather than online, you will find it at Sephora & Ulta on the 31st, Thursday.  I love shopping at Sephora.com due to the VIB bonuses, free samples and fast shipping.  The following were in my box:
  1. Algenist Overnight Restorative Cream (free sample)
  2. Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme Perfume (free sample)
  3. Pacco Rabanne Lady Million (free sample)
  4. Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-hr Primer SPF 30 Fair (free deluxe sample)
  5. Urban Decay - Glinda Palette
  6. Sephora Hair Ties
For the free deluxe sample I used coupon code "BBPRIMER".  You can find coupon codes on retailmenot.com and MrRebates.com.  I also received 3% cash back from Mr. Rebates.

I was surprised at how large the eyeshadow case is.  Each eyeshadow is about the size of a quarter.  The Glinda Palette also comes with an eyeliner and lipstick.  The lipstick is a earth tone, a very natural look.  It says it's a high-gloss lip color, but I'd say it's slightly glossy.  The mirror on the case is huge and you could easily use it to apply your eyeshadows. If you are using their "get the look" instructions, you will want to keep the box it came in because that is the only way you will know what the names of the eyeshadows they refer to are.  The names are unfortunately not on the metal box that holds the eyeshadows, which is disappointing.  I'm a bit confused about the two colors they refer to as Aura, which is the 2nd eyeshadow in the photo above.  One of them in the instructions is referred to as violet iridescent and while on the box's photo it appears slightly purple, the actual eyeshadow is a grey color!    Then it refers to the second Aura color as rose iridescent and it appears as pink on the box and the actual eyeshadow is a yellow color!  Maybe when they are applied to the skin they look as they do on the box?  I am also disappointed to see that the hinge on the eyeshadow box is made of plastic and I can foresee the hinge breaking.  The hinge should have been made of the same metal material the box is made out of.  Do the Naked palettes have the same hinge and has it lasted through many uses?  I didn't buy any of the Naked palettes, since they looks best on a warm skin tones rather than cool.  I find brown eyeshadows just make my skin look dirty, since I have a cool skin tone.  Speaking of skin tones, I recommend the Glinda Palette for cool skin tones and the Theodora Palette for warm skin tones.  Just as you can see the actress that plays Glinda, Michelle Williams has a cool skin tone.  Also, Theodora played by Mila Kunis has a warm skin tone.  I would have liked a matching blush to complete the look, it's a shame it is missing from this collection!  Any recommendations on a blush that would match?  So what do you think of this collection, please comment below!

I look forward to seeing the movie the palettes were inspired by!  Here's a trailer for you to watch:

Vintage Minnie Minis Disney by OPI Manicure

Valentine's Day Marble Manicure

Base color is If You Moust You Moust with swirls of color on top:  The Color of Minnie & I'm All Ears

This is from a set:

Vintage Minnie Minis Disney by OPI

I was in the mood for a Valentine's Day Manicure, so this is what I came up with.  This was really hard to photograph.  The photos turned the pink into more of a lilac pink color in most of the photos and the glitter wasn't very visable in the photos. It looks more pink in person.  So these were the best I could come up with.  If you look at the pink bottle of polish in the above photo, that is the accurate color of the base polish on my nails.  For some reason when the photo is taken, the color in the bottle is accurate, but on the nails it is different.  I found a very similar color to If You Moust You Moust in my collection and it's called Shorts Story by OPI.  I used that on my toes.  The Vintage Minnie Minis nail set was sold a year ago.  You can still find it on amazon.com for purchase, if you fancy it.  Yeah, the edge of my middle finger isn't so straight, that is due to doing the process twice since I didn't like the results the first time.  If you don't like the swirl results, just apply another heavy coat of your base color and then start the process over.  For some reason it made the edge not so straight in magnification, but in person you can't tell at all!

This design is done with a dotting tool and the how to's are described in full detail in a previous blog post located here.  If you haven't tried this nail art design yet, you really owe it to yourself to give it a try.  It is easier than water marbling and is not messy at all.

Nifty Shades of Grey - Sephora by OPI

Manicure featuring Nifty Shades of Grey

Taken with flash

This is a new nail polish from Sephora made by OPI which is a duo chrome.  A duo chrome polish changes colors when you move the nail.  This one looks like a chrome purple color when you look at the nails straight on.  When you move the nail up or down it appears to be a chrome grey color.  This polish is very thin and it took three coats to be opaque.  It really was so thin it was difficult to keep it from running towards my cuticles.  This polish is very difficult to photograph without sunlight.  We've had days of gloomy weather, so I hope to get another photo in sunlight soon.  It's a pretty polish without sunlight, but I know the full color and duo chrome effect will be much better in sunlight as previous ones I have had on have been.  The Sephora by OPI line of polishes is my favorite and I highly recommend them, they really stay chip free longer than any other polish I have tried.  Do you love duo chrome polishes?  What polishes have you bought at Sephora lately?

Update - in sunlight this duo chrome color goes from purple to green when you move your nails.  Without sunlight it goes from purple to grey.   I always enjoy duo chrome polishes more in sunlight, but they are still fun to watch the color change in any light.  You don't need to be in direct sunlight to see the difference unlike glitter nail polish.

Los Tres Magueyes Restaurant Review

110 SW Maynard Rd
Cary, NC 27511

Nice clean, large, hand painted booths

Free Salsa & Chips & Delicious Chez Dip $2.75

Hot Delicious Chicken Fajitas $10.25

This is a review for a restaurant called Los Tres Magueyes located in Cary, NC.  They have several locations, but this is our favorite since it is consistently delicious.  This restaurant has received many awards over the years since they opened in 1991.  They serve lunch from 11 am to 2:30 pm and the sizes are perfect for a quick lunch. They bring out the food very quickly, so if you are in a rush this is the place to go for lunch.  Above you will see the delicious salsa, chez dip and chips.  They have the best chez dip available in this area!  There are lots of choices on the menu and we have tried many over the last twelve years we have frequented this restaurant.  I recommend the Enchiladas Supremes, Grilled Chicken Salad & the Quesadilla Deluxe with grilled chicken.  Hubby recommends the Fajitas, Nachos Supremos, Chile Relleno & Taco Salad. They are very good at getting your order correct even when you ask for substitutions.  The service is excellent and they work well as a team.  If you haven't tried this restaurant, I highly recommend you give it a try soon!

QVC's Tarte TSV - February 2013

Journey to Natural Beauty
Six-piece collection

Tarte TSV Item A233804

This is an advanced order of the Tarte TSV (Today's Special Value) that will be aired  February 5th on QVC, which is on channel 317 on Directv.  You can order this now with the item #A233804 for three payments of $19.98 plus shipping and handling of $6.97 & tax or one payment of $59.94 plus shipping & tax.  This is for the auto-delivery which will include a second shipment in June & a third shipment in November.  You also have the option of ordering a one time shipment with the item #A233578.  The retail value of the kit is over $160! Bargain!

Included in this Tarte TSV are the following products:
  1. The Brow Architect Brow Shaper, liner & definer - $19.50 value
  2. Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation in Fair, Light, Medium, Tan or Deep  -$38.00 value
  3. Airbrush Finish Bamboo Foundation Brush - $32.00 value
  4. Amazonian Clay Blush in the color Fearless - $25.00 value
  5. Brazilliance Skin Rejuvenating Maracuja Self Tanner Sample .5 fl oz - $2.72 value
  6. Amazonian Butter Lipstick - $24.00 value
  7. Lights, Camera, Flashes! Statement Mascara - $19.00 value
  8. Chic, travel-friendly bag - $? value
It indicates that there are only 6 pieces in the collection, in fact there are eight plus a pamphlet.   I ordered this on January 10th and it arrived on January 14th.  When I ordered it said it wouldn't ship until February, but as it should with advanced orders, it was shipped immediately.  So don't stress if you order and it says it wont ship to February!

The Brow Architect Brow Shaper, liner & definerThe brow shaper is a three in one brow perfector, you can shape and define brows with ease.  Mine came in fair and it works pretty well for my dark blonde brows.  I look forward to seeing instructions on this product when they feature it on air.   Be careful with the center compartment that houses the concealer, it must have a spring on it cause it came bouncing back out at me when I tried to put it back in after the first use!

Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation -  the only product I have tried before was the foundation in Ivory and the foundation brush.  I really love them both.  The Ivory is for very fair skin with a pink tone.  I was disappointed that the TSV didn't offer any of the pink toned foundations.  But this is such a good value, it's still worth purchasing and you could give away or sell the foundation if it's not right for your skin tone. I am thinking of mixing the two foundations Fair & Ivory or using Bare Escentuals' Advanced Clear Radience to give some pink back to my skin after using the Fair foundation.  That product was included in another BE TSV, so you may already have that product in your stash as I do.  I tried the Fair version alone today and it does conceal redness perhaps better than the Ivory.  I could get away with either color, though I still prefer Ivory.  I have found that I need to exfoliate on a regular basis or I have some dry patches that aren't noticeable until after the foundation is applied and that's on combination skin.  I was using Bare Escentuals powder foundation for over seven years, but now that I'm older it makes my wrinkles more obvious.  After much research and some sampling, I decided to go with the Tarte foundation.  In the pamphlet it says they are coming out with a powder foundation in March, which sounds exciting!  It has a really pretty container and airbuki brush.  The item # is A232155 for $43.50 on QVC.com.  If you give it a try, please come back and leave a comment, I would love to know what that one is like!

Airbrush Finish Bamboo Foundation Brush - the foundation brush is the best I've ever tried and if you are nervous about using a liquid foundation, this will assist you in your application.  I wouldn't even dare to apply it with anything else.  It's so soft and applies the foundation without caking.

Amazonian Clay Blush - the blush has some gold in it.  The compact is a little difficult to open and requires your fingernail to open.  It also includes a mirror.  Wow, this goes on heavy!  Be sure to barely dab the blush with your brush!  This is a very bright color.  I think a more earthy color would go better with the lipstick.

Brazilliance Skin Rejuvenating Maracuja Self Tanner -  this is only .5 fl oz, so I can't imagine getting much coverage with it, perhaps you could just do your legs giving a look of wearing stockings.  I am not a fan of self tanners.  I will have to look up the reviews on this before even trying it.  If you have tried this product before, please comment below how you like or dislike it.

Amazonian Butter Lipstick -  this is very moisturizing and is in a very earthly natural looking color.  The color is called plummy rose.  I'm not really seeing any plum, more a dark earthy brick color.  The container is cardboard with a metal piece holding the lipstick.  I'm not crazy about the use of the cardboard, I think by the time I get to the bottom of the lipstick the container wont look so great.

Lights, Camera, Flashes! Statement Mascara -  I really like their other mascara which didn't irritate my sensitive eyes and it didn't feel like I had mascara on.  This one seems very similar, if not the same.  It gives a more natural look, giving the lashes a dark color and making them appear longer.  It was a little challenging with the lower lashes.  I had to remove some with a q-tip.  It didn't go on clumpy on the top lashes, but it did on the lower ones.

Purple Bag - is very pretty and could be used as a clutch.  Seems too pretty to use just as a makeup bag, but it certainly would be good for traveling.

So there you have it, the next Tarte TSV that will be on QVC in February.  What do you think and are you going to purchase this one?  What's your favorite brand of cosmetics?  I'm an ex-Bare Escentuals customer of over seven years who is now leaning towards mostly purchasing the Tarte & MAC lines.

Be sure to check out my Blog Sale going on right now.

Update - the brow shaper and the mascara broke, the plastic parts on them.  I contacted QVC and Tarte. QVC gave me a store credit for the brow shaper and Tarte said I would have to ship it at my cost back to them to get an exchange.  Since so many other people were complaining about theirs breaking also, getting an exchange at my cost for shipping would be a waste of my time and money, so I went with the QVC credit.  Then the mascara broke a couple weeks later and mind you I had only used it a couple of times. The plastic part at the top that pulls the mascara off the wand broke, so it was just a blob of mascara on the wand and unusable. I have never had this issue with any brand of mascara, not to mention such an expensive one such as Tarte! At this point I'm tired of dealing with the lack of quality from QVC and Tarte, so I'm done with both companies. I'm tired of complaining and as a result I cancelled my auto-delivery with Tarte and QVC.  Money talks and neither are getting my money.  1st strike this year, QVC sent out smaller sizes of the French croissants, then after being on auto-delivery since 2009 with WEN, they sent me 1/2 the previous sizes on 2 of the 3 items and denied it, then these Tarte issues. All of this causes me to decide that I am done with QVC.  QVC has lost a customer of 24 years.  Goodbye QVC! They have fired way too many quality hosts and they are treating their customers to the opposite claims of what they started their business as:  Quality, Value & Convenience, where is it now, QVC?

China Glaze's It's a Trap-eze Manicure

From the Cirque du Soleil Worlds Away Collection

This manicure features a nail polish called It's a Trap-eze from China Glaze's Cirque du Soleil Worlds Away Collection.  I purchased three polishes from this collection, to read about that haul, click here.  I found I needed three coats, so that I couldn't see the white tips of my nails.  I would suggest applying one coat of an opaque white polish prior to applying this polish.  Removing this polish was a challenge, so the less coats of it you use the better.  I need to remind myself that white polish against my extremely fair skin isn't so flattering.  I love this polish, but I think it would look better on a darker skin tone.  The glitter in this polish is also more flattering during sunny days.  I happened to wear it during a week of gloomy cloudy days which didn't show off the glitter well.  This glitter polish only seems to reflect well in sunlight.  It's pretty easy to apply and one top coat of Seche Vite makes it smooth.  It was a bit prone to chipping after six days.

China Glaze's Whirled Away & For Audrey Manicure

From the Cirque du Soleil Worlds Away Collection

For Audrey (2 coats) with Whirled Away on top (1 coat)

China Glaze's For Audrey (2 coats) with no top coat!

When I found out about the Cirque du Soleil Worlds Away Collection I did some research on the line and decided I had to have three of them.  This is my first purchase of any China Glaze nail polishes.  I think it came out very 50's retro and I'm pleased with the results, since that was what I was aiming for.

For Audrey is a beautiful color meant to duplicate the color of the Tiffany & Co store boxes.   Named after Audrey Hepburn since the store was featured in one of her movies called Breakfast at Tiffany's.  This color is fabulous and it's so glossy it doesn't even require a top coat!  Though I do recommend a top coat to maintain a chip free manicure.  The application of this color was a bit tricky since it's very thin and dries quickly.  I found I had to be careful not to have too much polish on the brush and had to work quickly.  As soon as I was done with the middle and one side it was drying too fast to finish the other side without issues.  This would probably be a great polish for water marbling since it's so thin.  It's such a pretty color, it's worth dealing with those issues.

Whirled Away is also a challenge in the application process.  First you need to decide how many bars and octagons you want on your nails.  I recommend spending a little practice time on faux nails before applying on your own.  You have the option of brushing it on or dabbing it on.  I found that dabbing it on caused bubbles in the clear base, so brush it on as much as you can.  Sometimes the brush had nothing but the clear base on it when I pulled it out of the bottle.  I noticed that a lot of the pieces were sticking to the inside of neck of the bottle when I was trying to get less clear base on the brush, so that's where I pulled the pieces to dab on.  That way there was very little base clear polish going on with the pieces and it limited the amount of bubbles.  So to summarize, brush on a couple strokes and then go back and stroke the brush on the inside neck of the bottle and dap those pieces on the parts that are blank.  It's really a personal choice, some like less or more pieces on the nail.  I tried to go light on the pieces without having any blank spots and had more pieces than I really wanted.  Today I found out that China Glaze came up with some more top coats similar to this one but with glitter bars and octagons instead of matte called Glitz 'N Pieces and I'm really looking forward to trying those in February.

To see the haul these polishes arrived in, click here.  I will be posting tomorrow a manicure featuring It's a Trap-eze also from the Cirque du Soleil Worlds Away Collection.

So what do you think of what I came up with and did you purchase any from the Cirque du Soleil Word Away line polishes?  Please chat with me by commenting below!  I look forward to seeing the Cirque du Soleil movie.

  9. Tarte - smolderEYES Amazonian clay waterproof liner, full size, $25 value
Also included is a pamphlet and a magazine.  Each page of the pamphlet features one of the included products and includes the following information:  ingredients, how to use and info about the company.  This is my favorite sample box and I highly recommend it.  Be sure to order early since it sells out when featured on air.  It only includes cosmetics that QVC sells and are all brands that I enjoy.  I look forward to using the Julep nail polish, it's a really pretty coral, peachy color that will be nice in the spring.  I am also a Julep Maven and receive monthly nail polish boxes from Julep.  If you want more information on that subscription box, click here.  I love the Ole Henriksen's & Algenist  lines, so I will be using these soon.  They are very expensive brands that I would not normally purchase due the price!  So I'm always happy to see them included in the Test Tubes.  The small sample size of the face wash from Philosophy is the perfect size for the shower.  The hand cream is the perfect size for traveling or to slip into your hand bag.  I'm not as familiar with the Nick Chavez line, so I really can't say much about that line of cosmetics. The Soy Face cleanser is a little packet sample, only to be used once or twice. The Mally lip color is a pretty pink with very fine gold and pink glitter.  Her lip gloss has a very smooth texture, not sticky at all.  The Tarte eye liner is a brown color.  I will have to look for a video on how to apply this one. It's very wide, so I'm not sure how you are suppose to line your eyes with such a wide point.  At first glance I thought it was eyeshadow.  So there you have it, the latest QVC New Beauty Test Tube shipment.  What's your favorite sample subscription?

  4. Luther's Treats Mind - chicken apple sausage flavor
  5. Tropiclean - teeth gel
My dogs love furry toys that squeak, but this cow toy is a bit large for toy breeds.  Teddy (Maltese) will fetch just about anything though.  My dogs have tried the yumZies brand before and they just reject them.  I'll be donating that one.  Issy (Shih Tzu) will eat them after they sit there for awhile and she realizes I'm not giving out anything better.  Maybe your dogs will enjoy them, but mine are use to freshly baked treats made by me.  You will find many healthy dog cookie recipes on this blog.  My dogs love real beef bones and I stopped giving them to them for awhile since there are such different views and opinions on giving these to dogs.  Some people say they are fabulous for cleaning their teeth, while others say they aren't quite safe enough for their stomach.  How do you feel about giving real bones to your dogs?  They sure do love them.  The Venison Joe's brand is a US product, which is great.  I prefer to buy US products.  I wish they had placed them in a sealed bag because the basting got all over everything in the box.  The stuffed toy has to be cleaned off.  It was quite messy.  The Luther treats were approved by Isabella who stole some from Harvey and then looked around for more.  After several minutes Leo & Harvey tried them out and Teddy rejected them. I threw out the rest of the treats since they didn't agree with Harvey's stomach.  I wont use Tropiclean, I don't like the look of the ingredients and I'm very careful about what I give my dogs.  That will just be thrown away.  I heard a very bad review online, so I'm not even going to chance it.  So there you have it, my review of PetFlow's monthly subscription box for dogs.

Previous finds for my dogs include BarkBox and Doggyloot, I highly recommend those companies and you can find out about them on my blog.  If you have any suggestions on places online to shop for dogs, please comment below.
