Pretty & Polished Jawbreaker - Indie Manicure

Jawbreaker Manicure:

Taken in a bit of sunlight, not full sun.

A scary close up!  Yeah, my cuticles look better in person!

Since I'm not crazy about Halloween colors on my nails, I went with a polish this week that looks like candy instead.  Don't get me wrong, I love Halloween manicures on others, just not me.  Though I think I would like a candy corn water marbled manicure, but don't currently own those colors.  This polish looks like a Jawbreaker candy.

This past year I have really explored the world of nail polishes, stepping outside the OPI box.  OPI is my favorite polish, since I find it chips the least on my nails.  But after reading blogs about other polish brands I decided to start trying them.  To my shock and amazement, I found out about what they call "Indie" polishes.  There are ladies out there coming up with their own polish and selling them on Etsy, Facebook and their websites.  Wow, I'm amazed!  Can you imagine sitting at your kitchen table or craft table and playing with glitter and polish and coming up with your own line of nail polish?!?  Wow!  If it wasn't for the fumes, I'd probably try this out myself, but I don't want to expose my dogs to the fumes.  So while tempted, I will pass on this crafty idea and leave my crafty years behind me for awhile longer.  So I found a nail polish swap on a Julep forum on Facebook and purchased 4 Indie polishes.  This is one of them.

Jawbreaker by Pretty & Polished - it has red, blue, purple and yellow glitter in a white base.  The above photos feature two coats of Manicure Keeper by Orly (rubberized base coat to prevent chips), three coats of Jawbreaker, and one clear top coat of Seche Vite.  You could go with two coats, but I could still see the white tips of my nails and I don't care for that look.  It's pretty smooth to the touch despite the glitter.  I will put another top coat on in a day or two.  If you would like to purchase this polish, visit her Etsy shop here.

So there you have it, my first manicure using an Indie polish.  Have you tried an Indie polish yet?  I dare you!

Skyfall 007 Collection by OPI

OPI's Skyfall Collection:

Bottles of:  Live & Let Die, The Living Daylights, Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies

Swatches of: Live & Let Die, The Living Daylights, Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, two coats topped with one coat of Seche Vite top coat.  Click on photos to enlarge.

This blog post features four of the thirteen polishes in the new collection called Skyfall 007 by OPI.    There are also 3 magnetic polishes:  Is That Sliva?, Bond James Bond, and Morning Money Penny.  The decision was very difficult since all the polishes in the collection are winners!  I rarely like all the polishes in any collection, so it was very difficult to decide which ones to purchase.  I read reviews on blogs and watched YouTube videos to help me decide.  Since Ulta still did not have the collection available for purchase and couldn't tell me when they would, I purchased these from Amazon.  I am still in search of the magnetic polishes, I love those from Nails, Inc and since OPI is my favorite polish, I am very anxious to try their version!  They are a must, since they have holographic particles in them!    Update:  I bought one of them, check out my Is it Silva? manicure here.  One of the thirteen polishes has pieces of real 18K gold in them for $30!  Not a bargain, and more than I am willing to spend. Well Sephora has the Sephora by OPI version on sale for half that, so I ordered that.  If you are interested, check out Sephora.com before it sells out and don't forget to use a coupon & Mr. Rebates to lower your price even more!

Live & Let Die - a very dark green with fine gold pieces.  The gold pieces mostly show up in the sun or when you move your hand in the light.  I am thinking that the 18K polish on top of this would be really pretty and that's my plan soon.  Still waiting for the 18K polish to arrive. Stay tuned for photos, subscribe so you don't miss them. Check out my manicure using this polish:  Live & Let Die + 18K Gold Top Coat.

The Living Daylights - this one has large glitter in a clear base.  Very fall colors:  dark turquoise, silver and copper.  With one coat of Seche Vite on top it doesn't have a rough finish at all.  I would recommend using this polish as a glitter top coat with one coat on top of another fall polish.  You could go with one or two coats over a white metallic polish, if you really want the glitter to stand out.

Goldeneye - the most glittery gold polish I have ever seen!  The photo was taken in the sunlight, it's more gold than that coppery, orange color it appears to be above.  If you have ever seen a gold Asian lucky cat, this is an exact match.  This one is a must have and would look great used as a french manicure tip or a chevron tip on top of a fall color polish.  The OPI website recommends that you use this on the other side of your nail, if you have long nails.  Apparently one of the actresses in the movie will be wearing it like this.  Sounds like a good idea until it's time to remove the polish from that curved area!  Maybe I'll give it a try, never liked the bare side of my nails and I have considered doing that before.  Joan Rivers believes in painting that side and it does give it a finished look.  If anyone has any tips on removing the polish from the underside of the nail, please post below for all of us! Perhaps a cuticle stick with cotton & nail polish remover on it would be best.  That reminds me, Sephora also has their nail polish remover on sale.  It is the only polish remover I use for glitter.  It saves you time and it works faster than any other, it's worth every penny!  Give it a try!  Check out my marble manicure using this polish: Marble Manicure for Christmas.

Tomorrow Never Dies - a purple blue metallic color with a warm tone to it.  It's rare to find a purple polish that has a warm fall tone rather than the typical cool summer tone.  This one would look great with 18K gold flakes on top or with a gold polish tip in french or chevron shapes.  This one looks more blue in photos, but in person the purple stands out more.  If you love purple, you will love this one, and it's perfect for fall and winter.  This color would look great with a black outfit.  It reminds me of a fall purple blouse that I use to wear and loved.

I'll post manicure photos when I try out these colors in the near future.  I will be trying that green & purple polish first and the gold either on the tip or the underside.  I will also be posting photos of my magnetic polish manicure, since I will get my hands on that polish soon!  I'll update this post with photos of the polish & it's box when it arrives also.

I love the James Bond movies!  I look forward to the new one, November 9th and here's the video trailer for your entertainment:

BarkBox - October 2012

October BarkBox

Leo checking out the latest box from BarkBox!

Contents of box

Leo checking out the ring toy

Tried to get Teddy to hold the Mustache toy on his own for a photo, but instead he ran off with it.

Leo saying to Teddy regarding the hoop toy, "Teddy can I play with it too?"

Teddy playing with the mustache toy.

Cookie Time - Teddy getting his cookie and Harvey anxiously awaiting his.

Harvey's turn, cookie time, yum!

Leo's turn, cookie!

Cookie time is over, Teddy wants to play!  Teddy asks Harvey, "Will you throw this for me, Harvey?"

Hoop toy also works well as a tug toy.  Teddy really loves this new toy!

This is a monthly subscription service called BarkBox for $25 including shipping.  Each month my dogs wait anxiously for their next box and are so happy when they see it arrive!  In the October shipment, the following items were included:
  1. Lollycadoodle - 100% wool toy handmade by artisans in Nepal, lollycadoodle.com
  2. Feelgood Treat Company - Turkey Trail Blazin crunchy treat with organic ingredients.  No wheat, gluten or preservatives, feelgoodtreatco.com.
  3. Moody Pet - Humunga Stache Mini, fetch toy, moodypet.com.
  4. Tropiclean - Clean Teeth Gel, all natural, keeps breath fresh and helps reduce tarter & plaque, tropiclean.net.
  5. Metro Paws - fancy designed Poopy Pack, metropaws.com.
  6. Honest Discounts - 10-75% off prescriptions at 54,000 participating locations, honestdiscounts.com.
Teddy loves playing fetch, so it's fun for him to have a new fetch toy to play with.  He really loves the wool hoop toy!  This was the item they all were most interested in.  All four of our dogs loved the Turkey Trail Blazin treats and they are really crunchy.  They didn't play with the mustache toy as much as the hoop.  I haven't tried the teeth gel on them yet.  The poppy packs will come in handy and have a fancy argyle design.

Wet N Wild - Fergie Collection - Fall 2012

Fergie Nail Polish Collection:

My collection all in a line, don't they look like good little soldiers?

Make Them Boys Go Loco, No Place Like Home, Take the Stage, Mermaid Curves, Kaleidoscope Eyes, Flossy Flossy, Rock 'n Roll, Tonight's Gonna be a Good Night, Glamourous.

Swatches of:  Make Them Boys Go Loco, No Place Like Home, Take the Stage, Mermaid Curves, Kaleidoscope Eyes, Flossy Flossy, Rock 'n Roll, Tonight's Gonna be a Good Night, Glamourous.  Used two coats, plus one top coat of Seche Vite.

Hollywood Walk of Fame Swatch

Hollywood Walk of Fame Bottle

I'm not a real big fan of the wet n wild brand, but when I heard Fergie was involved and took a look at the collection I decided to purchase some.  All the of the colors look beautiful, so deciding which ones to purchase was a challenge.  Drugstore.com was having a 40% off sale, so I decided to narrow it down to ten polishes. Hollywood Walk of Fame is on back order and I'm waiting for it's arrival.  This glitter looks like it would be rough to the touch, but it's smooth with one coat of Seche Vite on top.  It seems glitter polish has improved a lot, this is the second brand I've tried lately that has been smooth!

Make Them Boys Go Loco is a black base with red round large glitter pieces.  It's easy to apply.  I saw a review by another blogger and she complained about the extra wide brush, but I found it helpful when applying this line of large glitter polishes.  When applying large glitter you want to use as few strokes as possible, because if you go over what you applied you will be removing some of the glitter!  This polish is prettier in person.  This would look so pretty with a black dress & red accessories!  Would be perfect for a holiday party!   This one is my 3rd favorite out of this collection.

No Place Like Home:  think of Dorothy's shoes in The Wizard of Oz!  Very pretty, tons of red & holographic glitter. May want to use three coats or use one coat of plain white or red polish first then 2 coats on top.  Would look great with anything black with red & silver accessories. This is my 4th favorite since I don't wear a lot of bold red polish.  If you love red, buy this, it's awesome!

Take the Stage:  pretty purple fine glitter and large round silver glitter.  This one will need 3 coats or a plain white or purple polish first.  Wear this one with silver jewelry and cool colored fabrics.  This is my sixth favorite, since I'm trying to wear less purple.  It's a lot like Devine Swine from OPI.  If you love this shade of purple, buy it!

Mermaid Curves:  think summer or a cold snowy winter day.  Would look great with a furry white coat or those furry white snow boots!  In the summer, would be great with a turquoise dress or bathing suit.  You could get away with two coats, but I think I'll go for three.  This one is my favorite out of this collection.  Definitely a winter or summer polish.

Kaleidoscope Eyes:  large gold & turquoise glitter in a clear base.  This would look great on top of a gold or black polish, one or two coats, no more.  Wear gold jewelry with this one.

Flossy Flossy:  small & large gold glitter with a clear base that has extra fine holographic pieces.  Could try this one on top of black, gold or white polish.  Wear gold jewelry with this one.

Rock n Roll:  extra fine grey glitter with fine holographic pieces.  Can be worn alone with 2-3 coats.  This is my 2nd favorite.  Definitely wear this one on a sunny day to get the full effect of those holographic pieces!  Wear cool colors and silver jewelry with this polish and a grey or black outfit.

Tonight's Gonna be a Good Night: small black matte pieces & large gold glitter in a clear base.  Try this one over metallic black, gold or white polish.  Wear gold accessories with this one and a black or red outfit.

Glamourous:  extra fine gold glitter & large glitter in a clear base.  Would look good on top of black, gold, white metallic, or any warm color polish.  Really will spice up a boring polish!  It's the perfect glitter top coat!  This is my 5th favorite.

Hollywood Walk of Fame:  my backordered polish arrived.  It has fine gold glitter in dots and bars and stars in a clear base.  This is meant to be used as a glitter top coat.  First apply as a top coat as you do with any polish then fish the stars out of the bottle and dot them on where you would like them.

So there you have it, my huge haul of Fergie polish from drugstore.com!  I've never purchased that many polishes from one collection, but for $2.09 per bottle, how in the world could I resist!  I also received money back from Mr. Rebates & drugstore dollars to be used in January on top of 40% off.  Bargain!

Did you buy any of the polishes in this collection?  Which ones are your favorite?  Please write a comment below, chat with me!

Fred's Carrot Cake Dog Cookies

Fred's Healthy Carrot Cake Dog Cookie Recipe

Ingredients:

4 1/2 cups Oat Flour
1/2  Cup Quaker Oats
1  Egg
3 Tablespoons Chicken Broth
1 Tablespoon Molasses
2 Cup Carrots (about 70 baby carrots cooked then mashed)
1/4 Cup Parsley
1 Applesauce cup (4 oz, unsweetened)

Directions:

Preheat oven at 350° F.

Whisk egg in large bowl & add all other ingredients:

Fold with a spatula & stir with a fork until it's throughly mixed and looks like this:

Place dough into the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes.  Place some parchment paper down on counter.  Sprinkle with oat flour.  Get your rolling pin out and dust with oat flour also. In addition, dust your cookie cutter with oat flour.  Place cookie dough on parchment paper and roll out until it is about 1/4 of an inch in thickness.  Use your cookie cutter to make shapes in the dough like this:

If the cookie dough is too sticky to roll, add a bit more oat flour to your batch & stir again, then try rolling again. If your dough is too dry, add some more chicken broth or cooked, mashed carrots.  Place cutout dough on a silpat lined cookie sheet like so:

Roll out the rest of the dough and continue using cookie cutters till all the dough is cutout and placed on cookie sheets.

Place cookie sheets in oven for 35 minutes.  You way want to flip them over after 18 minutes, if you made them too thin. If they are getting too dark and look like they are cooking too fast, go ahead and flip them. Use photo below as your guide for the darkness & color you are aiming for.  If you don't make them thin enough you'll need to cook them longer, up to 50 minutes total cooking time.  When the cookies are cooked enough they will be crispy.  At that point, turn off the oven and leave in oven for two hours with the oven door closed.  After two hours, remove cookies from oven and let cool on the cookie sheets.  When cookies are cool, give out samples to your doggies:

This batch makes about 38 cookies using the bone shaped Wilton cookie cutters from Macys.com.  Store the rest of the cookies in an airtight container. Open up the next day and smell the wonderful carrot cake scent! Options - add 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, may skip chicken broth, may substitute baby carrots with regular carrots.  Taste tested & approved by Leo, Teddy, Issy & Harvey on October 8th 2012.

Make these tasty & healthy treats for your dog today, use organic ingredients whenever possible. Your dogs will thank you with lots of hugs and kisses!  If you try this recipe or have questions,  please comment below.

No time to make these cookies yourself?  $8 per dozen, $15 for two dozen plus shipping at cost, email me for more info or to place your order.  Please indicate which cookies you would like and the quantity.  Invoice & payment via paypal.  Cookies made to order for maximum freshness, allow up to 3 days for your order to be baked and shipped. Shipping in the USA only.

Sephora Haul - October 2012

Sephora Bargains

Free samples on top row, Cinderella Sephora by OPI mini nail polishes, Betsey Johnson Sephora by OPI polish in the color Sparkling Personality

Cinderella Sephora by OPI mini polish swatches

Betsey Johnson Sephora by OPI Sparkling Personality Swatch

I purchased the above for only $16.49, a retail value of $34.00 (not including free samples).  How did I get such a bargain, you ask?  I first went to retailmenot.com and looked for the best coupon to use for my order.  I used a free shipping code since I didn't want to order $50 worth of products, which is their requirement for free shipping. Then I went to Mr. Rebates for cash back.  That cash back ($0.89) isn't included in my total, that's just an extra I'm not counting.  But if you want me to, that brings my total down to $15.60.  I used two gift cards I received from wrapp.com, one for $10 and one for $5.  I received the first one by checking Sephora's Facebook page on Friday and they were offering a $10 gift card for free.  I then received the second one from a friend who sent me a free $5 gift card from wrapp.com.  So that was $15 off my order!  Doing my little Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy bargain dance!

To my surprise, the Cinderella glitter polishes aren't rough to the touch with just one top coat of Seche Vite.  I'm planning on either a gradient manicure using these polishes or a chevron one.  So stay tuned for a post showing one of those manicures soon.  The Betsey Johnson polish is very pretty, it looks better on the swatch than in the bottle.  On to the free samples, the Taylor Swift perfume smells really good, I like her latest one, didn't like the first one she came out with.  The  L'Occitane lotion was snagged by hubby!  QVC is having a TSV soon for that product line, it brings the price down a bit, it's an expensive brand, but fabulous.  Check out my TSV preorder info here.  I bought that kit last year and shared it with hubby.  I haven't tried the other two samples yet.  Don't you love getting free samples!  Sephora is always generous with them, if you shop online.  I haven't had much luck getting any in person at the local store, so I shop mostly online!  I'm holding out for my other Sephora purchases to be made in November when hopefully I will receive the VIB 20% off coupon.  So stay tuned for that haul post, hopefully!
