BarkBox - February 2014

This is a monthly subscription box from BarkBox and I purchased the one for small dogs. The price varies depending on how long of a membership you chose. It varies from $19-29 a month and if you use my link, you'll get $5 off your dog's first box. Included in the February box were the following products:
  1. Max & Ruffy's - Tree of Life with coconut, molasses and flax flavor
  2. Loopies - cigar shaped fetching toy
  3. Complete Natural Nutrition - Cheese Please
  4. Etta Says - Crunchy Rabbit Chews
  5. Sushi Pups - squeak toy
Harvey (Shih Tzu) & Teddy (Maltese) enjoyed fetching the cigar toy. Leo (Maltese) really enjoyed making the Sushi toy squeak. My dogs weren't interested in the scent of the Max & Ruffy's treats and didn't want to try them. They gave the cheese treats a try, but they weren't wanting seconds. They prefer chicken, green beans, sweet potatoes & carrot cookies. I make them fresh homemade cookies weekly.  You can find many healthy dog cookie recipes on this blog. If you visit my Pinterest Dog Cookie Recipes Board, you can see all the recipes at a glance. When you see one you like, click on the photo and it will take you to the recipe. I'm waiting on the Etta Says company to tell me what the ingredients are in their Rabbit Chew before serving it to my dogs. I was unable to find the ingredient list online and it's not on the label which makes me uneasy. The only chews my dogs are currently served are Bully Sticks from Doggyloot. They really enjoy them and they seem to be the healthiest on the market and have little odor.

Check out what they received in their previous BarkBoxes:

Birchbox - February 2014

I've been putting off this blog post for several days since I'm so unexcited by my last Birchbox and their subscription service. I cancelled this subscription as soon as I received the February box. I'm so tired of the tiny samples they send and the brands they chose. They continue to send brands I've never heard of. I'd rather subscribe to a service that sends brands I recognize, so I can try them out and purchase them at the store of my choice, if I like them. They also claim that they use our profile to customize our boxes. If that was the case, they would have included the tea sample and nail polish instead. Included in my February box were the following:
  1. Bain de Terre - Passion Flower Color Preserving Shampoo
  2. Bain de Terre - Passion Flower Color Preserving Conditioner
  3. 100% Pure - Fruit Pigmented Mascara
  4. Harvey Prince - Hello Perfume sample
  5. Juara - Candlenut Body Creme
I will not be trying the shampoo and conditioner since I'm loyal to the WEN brand. I do not wish to try any other brand yet they continue to send me shampoo over and over again. I shall try the mascara, but I already have a long line of mascaras to try first. Hopefully it's safe for sensitive eyes. If you have tried it, please let me know what you thought of it below. I do not fancy the perfume. The body creme sample is so small! This is the sample size I expect to receive for free, not in a paid subscription! I will be selling the shampoo & conditioner on my Blog Sale.

Good bye, Birchbox!!! My money will no longer be sent your way, instead it will be going to subscription boxes that I love such as Fortune Cookie Soap & QVC's New Beauty Test Tube.  What's your favorite subscription box?

Check out what I received in previous Birchboxes:

Bath & Body Works Hauls - February 2014

Cheers to Capri 3-Wick Candle, Raspberry Peach Macaron 3-Wick Candle, Lemon Drops Mini Candle, Cinnamon Sugared Doughnut Mini Candle, Bubble Gum Mini Candle & Ceramic Pedestal Mini Candle Holder with Glass Dome Lid

Red Velvet Cupcake 3-Wick Candle, Watermelon Lemonade 3-Wick Candle, 3-Wick Metal Candle Pedestal

Twisted Peppermint Wallflower, London Calling 3-Wick Candles, Watermelon Lemonade Wallflower, American Boardwalk 3-Wick Candle, Leaves 3-Wick Candle, Cinnamon Sugared Doughnut 3-Wick Candles

Some one has been shopping at Bath & Body Works a lot lately! Oh, my! Usually I don't purchase much of their Spring collection, since I prefer their Fall & Winter scents. But they brought back London Calling which is one of my top five favorites! So they won me back for Spring and I decided to go ahead and risk it and buy some other scents that intrigued me. I quickly decided I also liked the Cinnamon Sugared Doughnut candle. When I bought the first one I learned from the cashier that it had been gone for two years and it's a very popular and hoarded candle. Well I thought, ok I'll give it a try and here I am collecting them myself a few weeks later. If you love that scent you may want to stock up when it's on sale cause they have already sold out online once. I really wanted to love American Boardwalk, but hubby said he couldn't stand it because it was giving him a headache and to extinguish it. Leaves is on my top five favorite list also. That was my second recent haul. I shopped online during a sale and used coupons so the candles only cost $9.37 and the wallflowers cost $2.25 each. In addition I used Mr. Rebates for an additional 3% back.

My third haul included the Red Velvet Cupcake 3-Wick Candle which I have multiples of, it's a favorite for sure. Then I decided to purchase the Watermelon Lemonade 3-Wick Candle since ladies on Facebook at the Bath & Body Works Junkies Group were raving about it. It does smell better while burning versus when it's not. It's nice, but not something I would buy multiples of. Then I picked up the 3-Wick Metal Candle Pedestal. It looks much better in person when a candle is sitting on top of it. It looked cheap to me on their website. It's really cute in person! I had called around searching for the white ceramic version and when I finally found one they wouldn't hold it for the customary twenty four hours. She said she would only hold it until the close of business. I couldn't make it to the store by then. So when I chatted with other ladies on Facebook about it they suggested I call Customer Relations. I hesitated since I really don't like dealing with conflict and complaining and it raises my blood pressure when people anger me. But I did it anyway because it was my favorite store and I was in shock that suddenly they weren't treating customers well. I called and the representative said she would call the store and have them hold it for me until the next day as I requested. When she returned from being on hold, she said they said they didn't have it. Whatever! I had clearly stated that it was ceramic and all the other descriptive words to make sure we were talking about the same item. So she called around and tried to locate it at another store. She could only find the mini one, but it was too long of a drive for me. She said if I called the store that they would ship it to me. Since I also wanted the Ceramic Pedestal Mini Candle Holder I went for it. I called and the order process was simple and easy and it arrived about four days later. It is SO cute, but it is very tiny and I really wish they had made the larger size available online. I'm disappointed that they are no longer making the 4.5 oz candles. The 1.3 oz ones are just too small for me to burn. I consider them tea light size and unless you are standing directly over it you can't smell it. With my survey coupon the 3-wick candles cost me $7.51 each and the stand cost $6.48. The Mini Ceramic Pedestal Candle Holder cost me $10.50 plus shipping of $6.

So on to my fourth recent haul which I made today.  I purchased Cheers to Capri since I love lemon scents. Some of the previous candles I bought from the cities line were disappointing, but I decided to go ahead and give it a try with my $10 off $30 coupon. I'm burning it right now and it smells really good. It's more of a energy kind of scent whereas the London Calling lemon one is calming. I burned the Raspberry Peace Macaron earlier and it smells less sour than when it's not burning. It's nice but not something I will repurchase. I haven't burned the mini candles and will save at least one just for display purposes in the mini ceramic holder. With my survey coupon the 3-Wick Candles cost me only $7.56 and the mini candles were $2.30.

Well there you have it, my latest hauls from Bath & Body Works. I need to stay away, so very far away for awhile! If you are addicted to their candles as I am, comment below with a list of your favorites.

Since this is one of my favorite stores to shop at, I have many Bath & Body Works hauls featured on this blog. Check out my hauls:

Fortune Cookie Soap - Spring Soap Box 2014

This is a quarterly subscription box from a company called Fortune Cookie Soap for $19.99 per box. In each box is a $10 coupon off your order from their website, so that makes the box cost only $9.99!  How wonderful is that! This is my first box from this company and I am very impressed! The scents are so heavenly and I can't wait to place my order for more tomorrow, since that's when they will add the new products to their website. Included in the Spring box were the following products:
  1. Forbidden Fruit - Fortune Cookie Soap
  2. The Bloom Bloom - Bath Fizzy
  3. Me So Thorny - Steam Me Up Scotty! Shower Fizzy
  4. Native Nectar - Body Wash
  5. Afternoon Delight - OCD Hand Sanitizer
  6. Venus Fly Trap - Perfume Oil
  7. Marshmallow Dreams - Cuticle Butter
  8. Make It Rain - Whipped Cream
My favorite scents are Make It Rain, Forbidden Fruit & Marshmallow Dreams.  I will be ordering some more of those and can't wait to get the full sizes in the mail! The Make It Rain Whipped Cream smells so good, the scent lasts and it's super moisturizing!  It's so rare to find a body cream or lotion that has a scent that lasts for hours. It's described as sparkling droplets of citrus & jasmine dripping with musk, clutched by cedar wood boughs. I love jasmine, citrus and cedar wood, so I was bound to love this creation! My second favorite is the Forbidden Fruit Fortune Cookie Soap which has scents of blueberry, verbena and lemon zest. It is noticeably moisturizing which is so important this time of year. Oh how good it smells, so deliciously scrumptious! If you like food scents as I do, you will love this one. My third favorite is my dog's most favorite. Yes, I present things to Leo to smell, it's something he really loves to do. I have to keep him from licking the Marshmallow Dreams Cuticle Butter off my fingers. It smells so yummy. It is described as lavender springs draped over sage and basil, livened with splash of vodka and a swirl of sticky, sweet marshmallow fluff. I really like how it starts out as a cream which makes it really easy to apply without any dripping. After you rub it in, it then turns into a clear oil on your cuticles and lands & stays exactly where you want it. So many cuticles oils are a drippy mess and creams tend to be sticky, so this is the perfect solution. It takes just a dab per hand.  I already tried out the bath fizzy & the shower fizzy also, I just couldn't wait.  I was surprised how moisturizing they are.  I am very pleased with everything in the box and can't wait for the summer box.

Well there you have it, my latest subscription find. If this sounds like a box you would like to try, be sure to get on their email wait list. I had to wait to get my first box and there may still be a wait list due to the limited supply. I dropped my Ipsy & Birchbox subscriptions, since I have more makeup than I can use right now. So this subscription is perfect for me because I need more bath and body products. If you subscribe to the Soap Box, I'd love to hear which scents are your favorite. Please comment below.  To check out all the subscription boxes I reviewed so far check out my Pinterest Subscription Boxes Board.  Simply click on the photo of the one that interests you to be taken to the matching blog post.

Discount Offer:  $5 off an order of $30 or more at their website, click here.

Update:  I attended the online launch party Friday night and won one of the giveaways!  I won three shower steamers, roll on perfume and perfume oil in the scent of my choice.  I also placed a large order of the Make It Rain, Forbidden Fruit & Marshmallow Dreams scents.  I will be blogging about it as soon as it arrives, so stay tuned!

Be Mine - Rainbow Honey Manicure

This is a nail lacquer from a company called Rainbow Honey and it's in the color Be Mine. It's a dusty rose pink with very small gold & magenta glitter. The glitter is very hard to see unless you are in direct sunlight. I tried to come up with some nail art on top of it, but couldn't come up with anything I liked. The nail lacquer dries quickly, so you can't go over your brush strokes and you have to paint quickly. Thankfully, the second coat and the top coat fixed any imperfections. This is my first experience with the Rainbow Honey brand. While it's pretty, it's not exciting enough for me. I will be selling this one on my Blog Sale along with many others. So be sure to check out my Blog Sale before you leave. What has been your experience with this brand of nail lacquer? Funny note, look at that little snowball in the picture above taken on our back deck! It still survives through warm temperatures! Wow, that was quite a snow storm we had in the south.  Usually it snows only every four years or so and it usually melts within twenty four hours. This time it was three days of snow, ice, snow and finally rain.  Crazy weather!  We were so happy we didn't lose power!  If you are in the south, how was it for you?  Please comment below with any comments, suggestions, etc.

Russell Stover Online Order

Happy Valentine's Day Chocolates

Build a Box Chocolates

The other day I was having a craving for a Mint Dream candy from Russell Stover. I haven't seen them at Hallmark or Walmart for years now, so I went on the hunt for them online. I was happy to see that I could order them directly from Russell Stover and decided to place an order. I found a coupon for 20% off at RetailMeNot.com. I bought a case of Mint Dreams since we can only have chocolate delivered via mail only a few months of the year due to the heat in the south. Then I noticed that I could order a box of chocolates with only the chocolates I wanted in it for just a few more dollars. I decided on only two flavors. I chose the yummy Dark Chocolate Orange Creams and the Milk Chocolate Coconut Clusters. I had to fight hubby over them when they arrived since they are so delicious! I also bought a little Valentine box for a friend. They also sell Whitman's and a brand I haven't heard of before called Pangburn's.  Have you ever heard of that brand before? I resisted ordering anymore chocolates because they are hard to hide from Hubby and he will eat them all so quickly!  I love to keep chocolates on hand for when I get a chocolate craving and I can save them for months unlike my Hubby. The box of custom chocolates was $12.79 and the case of twenty four Mint Dreams was $13.65 and shipping was free. I highly recommend ordering from them online. The order came in only six days. What's your favorite brand of chocolate?

Depression - Supplement Solutions

5-HTP, Neuro Bliss, L-Tyrosine, Holy Basil

Some of you may have read the title of this blog and figured out the meaning behind it, if you or someone close to you has suffered from depression. When I ask for "blue skies", I'm asking for a depression free day, free of the "black cloud" of depression.  I have suffered from depression on and off since I was a teenager. The worst of it was in my early twenties. I tried prescription drugs and was uninformed by my doctor some important facts about them.  Prescription antidepressants and anxiety drugs:
  1. Cause weight gain
  2. Are addictive
  3. Cause withdrawals when you stop taking them
  4. Can make your depression & anxiety worse
  5. Cause drowsiness
  6. Insomnia

That's just a few of the side effects. So finally after much searching, about ten years ago I found natural alternatives without side effects. These are the supplements from a health food store that will help your depression:
  1. L-Tyrosine, 500 mg
  2. Holy Basil
  3. 5-HTP
  4. Neuro Bliss Drink
I find L-Tyrosine is enough for me, one a day is all it takes. Give it two to four weeks to start working and if that isn't enough add Holy Basil and/or 5-HTP.  Those two are both best taken in the evening.  When I'm having a bad day I add those or the Neuro Bliss Drink. I'm able to keep depression away except a few days twice a year on two traumatic anniversaries. Some additional suggestions to help you:
  1. Exercise at least every other day at least 30 mins, preferably 60 mins
  2. Keep yourself busy with a hobby
  3. Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night
  4. Write down or pin on Pinterest what makes you happy and read or look at that list when sad
  5. Have a support system: join a support group and/or have a close friend you can confide in
  6. Do Yoga, meditation, deep breathing or something to relax you
  7. Be easy on yourself on the bad days: do less and take a break
  8. Find the cause of your depression
  9. Sunlight
First on the list is exercise. I know, I can hear you now, "no way when I feel like crap".  Ok, those days you can't get out of bed, yeah it's not going to happen, I understand!  I'm talking about when it's not as bad and those days you are free of depression. Be religious about it when you feel well, push yourself when you don't. Do what it takes, bribe yourself.  Tell yourself you will get a reward if you exercise.  Whether it's a cookie, going to a movie, shopping, whatever it takes! Or tell yourself you will do it five minutes and if it's awful you will stop. I assure you, you will get past the first five minutes to ten then fifteen and so on.  It's a mind game. You need to figure out if you need an exercise buddy or prefer to workout alone.  Also, try out different types of exercise and find what you like or dislike the least and do it.  Exercise produces serotonin which makes you feel happy. Take a walk at the very least because it will make you feel better!  Also, figure out if you are best suited for exercising in the morning or the evening. If you're a morning person, odds are exercising in the morning is best. If you're a night owl, try exercising at night but not too close to your bed time.

Second, keep yourself busy with a hobby.  Find a hobby, something!  Crochet, quilting, cross-stitch, knitting, volunteering, reading, crafting, find something! You need to keep your mind busy and off what is bothering you and hobbies also give you the reward of accomplishment in return.

Third is sleep! Don't skip it! There are supplements for this also, if this is an issue for you.  Melatonin, 5-HTP, Valerian, Passionflower and Chamomile. GNC makes a good one that you melt under your tongue. I currently use Andrew Lessman's PM Relaxation & Night Time supplements.  They have all of those ingredients in one capsule. They can be purchased on his website at ProCapsLabs.com or HSN.com. Neuro also makes a drink called Sleep that works well. Make sure you take these around sunset and not right before bedtime as long as you are at home and not driving, etc.  Also, establish a regular bedtime and stick to it. Stay tuned for a blog post more in depth about insomnia.

Fourth on the list is to write down what makes you happy. When you are depressed you can't see straight, so this is an important step. Write it down when you are not depressed. Whether it's music, photos of cute dogs, a free game on Facebook, whatever, write it down prior to the black cloud. Then force yourself to look at the list when you are sad to remind yourself of some things you can do or look at the happy photos. Check out my Make Me Happy Pinterest board for ideas or follow & pin.

Fifth is have a support system. Don't socialize with those who don't understand depression, can't empathize and can't be kind to you during these times. People who say "why the sad face, cheer up, or smile" aren't the ones you want to hang around because they will make it much worse. Spend time with a friend that has suffered from depression or who has been around someone who has had depression and understands. A friend that can be extra nice, empathetic and kind during the bad times is SO important!  I thank my friend Anne who in High School was there for me, gave me my space and was extra kind and never took it personal when I felt depressed and was grumpy.  That's who you need, a real friend not a conditional one. There are support groups also that you can go to, if you don't mind a group setting. Emotions Anonymous is one I attended and hosted in the past & recommend.  They use the Just For Today: The Choice is Mine 12 Steps.  I recommend printing it off and reading it when you feel sad or stressed. You need to learn that you are not alone and the coping methods that work. One of the best things I heard in that group from a member was "Don't let anyone live in your head rent free!"  That has been very helpful to me over the years.

Sixth is do something to relax you. When you are stressed you really need something to help you calm down or depression may set in.  Remember sadness turns to anger which turns into depression. I use the "Rest, Relax & Release" technique from meditation which can be done anywhere when you are stressed. It's simple: let your body rest, then relax the muscles and then release the tension & imagine it leave your body into the universe. Start from your toes and work your way to your head. This is just the basics of meditation. I encourage you to learn more about it and give it a try. Also, I recommend beginners yoga. It's not as difficult as it looks and it works!  These are things you should do when you can push yourself to do them. When you can't, a hot bath & aromatherapy will help.  Get some essential oils from a health food store and dab them on your temples or put some in your bath water. Lavender essential oil is really good for relaxation and calming which is also helpful for insomnia.

Seventh is give yourself a break. On days you feel really sad, make sure your to do list is as short as you can make it.  Don't try to tackle what you would normally do because you will exhaust yourself or fail and that alone will make you feel depressed. Just tell yourself you will tackle those things on another day and forget about it.  Rest when you can and take it easy, but that doesn't mean skipping exercise. You need to do that if at all possible to get your body to produce the serotonin you need to feel better.

Eighth is the hardest one, trying to find the cause of your depression. Whether it's a health condition that causes it or a traumatic event in your life. You need to find out what it is so you can move forward. There are many diseases that have depression as a symptom.  If you don't find out what it is you can't treat it and start to feel better. My thyroid disease is one cause and medication is the treatment.  It also can be hereditary and there is that nasty postpartum depression caused by dramatic changes in hormone levels just as in teen years. Write down all your symptoms on a list and research those symptoms and discuss it with your doctor.  I saw six doctors before I was able to get my thyroid disease diagnosis. My body is extremely sensitive to hormone levels and my blood work was barely showing the diagnosis. You have to keep insisting and pushing till you get a decent doctor that isn't lazy and just hands you a prescription for antidepressants. If it's a traumatic event that happened to you or a loved one that is the cause, you need to find a way to cope. Someone to talk to or a support group is what I recommend along with the other seven steps mentioned above. In that case, remember that tomorrow it won't feel as bad.  Time does heal those wounds.  Not to say you won't feel it, but it won't feel so severe and you will be able to go on with your life. There is also seasonal affective disorder caused by the lack of sun especially during the winter when there are less hours of sunshine.  That could be the cause of your depression that you may need to look into.  There are many possible causes, so keep searching and researching till you find it!  Don't give up!

Ninth, don't stay in dark rooms without sunlight.  You must open the blinds and get as much sunlight as possible.  Don't rent or buy a home or apartment with dark rooms!  Buy one that has large windows and has a living room that has lots of sunlight. When we built our home we specifically chose it to have the room we spend the most time in facing the afternoon and evening sun and even went so far as to add skylights.  The windows all along the back of the house go from the ceiling to the floor and it makes all the difference.  I also recommend sitting outside in direct sunlight for at least twenty minutes a day.

Ok, well that sums it up very quickly.  I could write a book on how to deal with depression, but this is a blog so I have to keep it short.  Just remember to push yourself on those days you don't feel as bad or the days you feel good and be kind & gentle with yourself on the bad days. If you have any questions or need someone to chat with email me or comment below. Hugs to you and I hope that I have helped you or someone you know. Please share this blog post because information is power and I wished someone had told me about these supplements many years ago. Feel free to snag my depression signature tags at my Fotki album.
