Marry Roll

Dynamite, Rock N Roll and Bagel Rolls

This is a review of an Asian restaurant called Sushi Iwa located in Apex, North Carolina. It's in the Beaver Creek Crossings shopping center near Ulta. They are open daily from 11 am to 10 pm. We visited last Sunday around 12:30 pm. They had quite a few customers, but there were still plenty of tables and booths available. Their sanitation score is currently 97.5 which is very good. I didn't fancy the decor and it's very dark inside. I had to brighten the interior view photo above to give you a better view. When we walked inside the manager was busy on the computer and I had to wait for the Asian receptionist to show up to seat us. I tried to place our drink order with her when we reached our table, but she said our waiter would be by soon. She wasn't friendly and not smiling though later she was very friendly with an Asian man and his child and brought them food. So I'm not sure if she was a receptionist or a waitress.

The non Asian waiter came by and took our drink order and I also placed an order for the Marry roll because I had read reviews that they were slow to deliver the sushi.  While we waited, Hubby and I scanned the sushi menu to decide on what other rolls we were going to order. If you prefer a sushi picture menu, this is the place for you. Every sushi roll they offer is pictured! Then the Marry roll arrived quite quickly to my surprise. Perhaps when the restaurant is full of customers that's when the orders arrive slower. We placed our order for the three other rolls. Sixteen minutes later our Dynamite, Rock N Roll and Bagel Rolls arrived. I recommend ordering one roll when you arrive with your beverage order, so that you aren't sitting around waiting too long especially if you are starving. They have a buy one get one free sushi offer. They charged us $14.95 for the Rock N Roll and $13.95 for the Bagel Roll and the Marry and Dynamite were free. So that's a total of $34.00 for four rolls, one soda and tax not including the tip. We thought the Marry roll was ok, but not nearly as good as Sushi Thai's version. The fish didn't seem chilled enough and the spices weren't as tasty. The dynamite roll was ok, but again not up to our standards. Hubby didn't like it at all. I asked for a side of eel sauce to make it tastier. The Rock N Roll Hubby enjoyed, but I wasn't crazy about it. It wasn't hot enough, since there wasn't much jalapeño on it. The Bagel Roll was awful. It mostly tasted like sour cream cheese with very little fish and too much greasy batter. That one didn't agree with us and it left us with upset stomachs all afternoon. I get the impression that their good reviews are mostly due to their prices rather than flavor and quality. Personally, I'd prefer to buy less rolls with higher quality than so many rolls that aren't as tasty. So if price is your first concern, then this is the place for you. For those that quality and flavor is most important, then go to Sushi Thai or my new favorite Tasu. What's your favorite Asian restaurant in the Triangle?
