This is a review of our 2nd shipment from a weekly, organic food subscription box called Green Chef. This box cost $89.94 and it included three recipes for two people. I upgraded from the Omnivore box that we received in our 1st box to the Carnivore box. Omnivore is $11.99 a serving which includes two meat recipes and one vegetarian and Carnivore is $13.49 which includes two meat and one fish recipe. They also offer Vegetarian for $10.49, Gluten Free for $13.49 and Paleo for $14.99. I'm very impressed with the quality of the ingredients and the fact that nothing has been missing from the boxes. Calories this week ranged from 691 to 786 and included one tuna, one steak and one chicken recipe. Preparation time ranged from 25 to 40 minutes. Sauces and dressings were prepared by Green Chef and some vegetables were chopped for us to save us time. In addition, the chicken was pre-marinaded to increase flavor. We rated two recipes five out of five stars and one recipe received four stars.
Seared Tuna Provençal, Sauce Gribiche & Roasted Veggie Panzanella Salad
I've never had tuna of this high quality before, so I was delighted by it's texture and flavor. Usually I'm not crazy about tuna steaks and prefer it out of a can due to it it's texture and being so dry and most importantly it being so pricey. Not in this case, they sent us yellowfin tuna steaks and they were scrumptious. The tuna gets five stars, but the side dish gets three, so we gave this recipe four out of five stars. The side dish had too much bread and not enough vegetables. We prefer bread and butter than croutons, so we should have done that instead of what the recipe called for. We just didn't care for the mix of croutons with the vegetables. The gribiche topping on the tuna was very unusual. It had eggs, cornichons, parsley and the base sauce they made for us. Neither of us had ever had anything like it before. It was tasty, but not my favorite for the week. This recipe had 691 calories and it look a bit longer than the 25 minutes the recipe indicated. It was a very filling and generous portion.
Indian Spiced Steak, Sautéed Chard, Tomatoes & Fennel and Spiced Rice
Wow, this recipe was so incredible! It had three delicious flavors going on and it was a flavor sensation! It made us feel like we were dining in a five star restaurant, so we gave this one five out of five stars. This reminds me of one of the recipes from our 1st box where there were three unique flavors on one plate, so it's like having three meals in one. Out of the three, my favorite was the roasted cauliflower, peas, chard stems and garam masala sprouted rice combination. The texture and flavor were heavenly and yet so healthy. My second favorite was the spiced Greek yogurt marinated steak. The third flavorite was the tomatoes, chard and fennel with herb citrus vinaigrette. There was so much going on and it was a delight to taste all three. Hubby didn't have any issues cooking it, but he did have a lot of multitasking with several pots and pans being used at the same time. This recipe was suppose to take forty minutes, but it took a bit longer. It was worth the time for the reward of the incredible flavor! Our house smelled so good! I'm getting very hungry just thinking about this wonderful recipe. This was our favorite recipe for the week. It had 782 calories and it was a generous and filling portion.
Chicken Market Salad, Potatoes, Corn, Lima Beans & Goat Cheese Dressing
Hubby gave this recipe five out of five stars and I gave it four. It was unlike anything we had before. The unique combination of ingredients were incredibly delightful. Who would think to put baby kale, red potatoes, corn, lima beans, celery, red onion, radishes, chicken, tarragon, parsley and sunflower seeds together! We really loved the goat cheese dressing they prepared for us. It was light yet full of flavor. I love how they marinated the chicken for us in advance. They used a fennel herb marinade on the chicken that was delicious. They also cut the onion and celery up for us. All of these help to decrease prep time and it's much appreciated. This recipe took a bit longer than the thirty minutes indicated to prepare, but Hubby didn't mind because he said it was fun to cook. It had 786 calories and it was a very generous portion. I could have easily saved part of it for a snack or a small lunch, but it was too late when I determined that, so I went ahead and enjoyed it in entirety.
It was a very enjoyable week of recipes yet again. I really enjoy their pre-made sauces & dressings and I really appreciate that they marinaded the chicken in advance for us. Marinades really need as much time as you can provide them to increase the flavor. That was always one of my complaints with their competition, that they wouldn't let us know to marinade in advance or do it for us. I'm really enjoying receiving high quality organic ingredients each week with not one single item missing. The competition tends to have at least one or two issues each week, either produce that went bad during shipping or something missing. Green Chef uses enough ice packs to ensure that even seafood arrives at the proper temperature in the heat here in the south. It's such a relief to not have to go out and shop for a missing or damaged ingredient and have to complain to get a store credit, not to mention the joy of receiving all organic ingredients. I'm very impressed with Green Chef! They are at the top of our list as our favorite food subscription service. I can't wait to get box number three! So which of the above recipes looks most appetizing to you?
