Play! by Sephora Subscription Box Review - October 2018

Scary Good Beauty

This is a review of Sephora's October Play Subscription Box labeled box number 967. They have several different boxes each month that they send out based on customers' profile. This month the retail value is $31.12. It only costs $10 per month including shipping. I received the following products:
  1. Urban Decay - All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray, made in the USA, .5 fl. oz., $1.87 retail value
  2. Yves Saint Laurent - Mon Paris Eau de Parfum, made in France, .04 fl. oz., $2.35 retail value
  3. Fresh - Soy Face Cleanser, made in the USA, .6 fl. oz., $4.47 retail value
  4. Bare Minerals - Gen Nude Patent Liquid Lipstick in Everything, made in Canada, .06 fl. oz., $5.42 retail value
  5. Dr. Brandt - Pores No More Primer, made in the USA, .25 fl. oz., $11.00 retail value
  6. Make Up For Ever - Matte Velvet Skin in Alabaster Y205, made in France, .16 fl. oz., $6.01 retail value
I have received the Urban Decay Setting Spray before, it's not really a product I would bother spending money on since I like to have the least amount of steps in my makeup application as possible. This spray bottle isn't spraying fine enough and I'm not crazy about its scent. It would have been nicer with some essential oils added to it for aromatherapy. I don't find setting sprays do much of anything. I prefer a nice setting powder. My favorite is Julep's Insta-Filter Finishing Powder.* I even use it on my face without foundation. It reduces the redness. I've tried Dr. Brandt's Primer before and while I like it, it's not as good as Benefit's Porefessional Primer. It's a tan lightweight lotion. After rubbing it in it turns clear. The Yves Saint Laurent perfume smells nice. It has notes of strawberry, raspberry, bergamot, calone, pear, orange flower, jasmine sambac, white peony, datura, patchouli, white musk, ambrox, cedarwood, and crystal moss. To me, it smells like a floral berry scent with hints of cedarwood and pear. I'm enjoying it, but at the price tag of $72 for one ounce, I won't be purchasing it! I've received a sample of Fresh Soy Cleanser before. It goes on clear and turns white when you rub it in. I like to place these sample sized cleansers in the shower since they take up so little shelf space. My favorite cleanser is Julep's Hydrating Cleanser which doesn't cause dryness.* I love the Bare Minerals brand especially their lipstick and glosses. This lipstick only needs one application to be opaque which is impressive for a gloss. It's a lovely neutral mauve color perfect for fall. It's moisturizing and comfortable on the lips. I highly recommend this brand, if you haven't tried it yet it's time to put it on your shopping list. I'm excited to try Make Up For Ever's foundation. They sent me the neutral shade of Alabaster Y205, but there are two other versions one in a pink tone R210 and one in a yellow tone Y15. If you aren't sure if you have a yellow or pink skin tone, go with the neutral. These are the fairest shades they offer. I have a cool pink undertone so I would purchase R210 instead of the neutral one they sent me. It's a pretty good match for my fair skin. It's supposed to last 24 hours and leave a matte finish. It has a nice consistency, but I don't like how it emphasizes wrinkles. The reviews state they changed the formula recently and most prefer the old formula. I prefer Julep's Cushion Complexion for my foundation. *

I like everything in this month's box, so it's a winner. My favorite product is the Bare Minerals Lipstick and my least favorite product is the Urban Decay setting spray. I'm not a fan of their new plastic bags. I prefer the cloth ones. They could at least create a new bag design each month like they did for the cloth ones. What's your favorite product in your box this month? If you haven't subscribed yet I recommend you give a try for a month at least. It's a fun and inexpensive treat. Check out my Play! by Sephora Pinterest Board to see what I have received in my previous 29 boxes. Also, check out my Subscription Box Pinterest Board to see what other boxes I've subscribed to over the years.

  1. The Mon Paris has a roller ball option for $29. It comes with the adorable bow on it. I bought it this way because I don't like heavy fragrances. The roller ball lets you control the amount you put on easier than a spray. :) Sharon

  2. I got the bare minerals in my box as well.I liked it a lot.
I just ordered the Julep Cushion from QVC last week for the first time. One question for you - Do you use a primer when you wear it?

    1. Why didn't you order it direct from Julep with free s/h? Most of the time I forget to use a primer because I'm in a rush, so no it's not necessary.

  3. It was a total impulse QVC purchase. I watched the presentation a few days ago. They had two for 34 with free shipping. It looked really easy with a matte finish.
My usual is IT CC but I recently started using Julep no excuses sunscreen and the CC cream doesn't look great on top of that. I thought I would try the same brand on top of the sunscreen.
