I recently finished reading The Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand, and I wanted to share my thoughts on it with you.
I purchased the book at Ollie’s for $5 after the dust jacket description caught my interest. Since I had loved the Netflix adaptation of her book The Perfect Couple, I was excited to dive in. However, I found this particular novel quite disappointing and would only give it one star.
The primary issue was the excessive number of characters. The author continued to introduce and describe new staff members, guests, and even their relatives until the very end, which made it difficult to connect with the story. The characters lacked meaningful development, and their individual stories felt brief. It felt more like a screenplay than a novel, perhaps written with a TV series in mind where mini-stories of guests work better across multiple episodes.
The pacing was also quite slow; I found the story unentertaining for the majority of the book. While the description mentions multiple points of view, it felt more like "countless" perspectives. I also found it frustrating that certain plot points, such as Chad’s secret, were withheld for far too long without a satisfying payoff. Based on this experience, I will likely avoid her other books that follow this format, such as The Blue Bistro and Golden Girl.
On a different note, I am still looking forward to the screen adaptation of Swan Song, which is intended to be the second part of The Perfect Couple series. I’ve noticed there hasn't been much news lately regarding a new screenwriter or a filming schedule, but I hope to see an update on the release date soon.
I invite you to follow me on the Good Reads website. I’d love to hear what you have been reading lately.
Happy Reading,
Wendy
