Play! by Sephora Subscription Box Review - January 2017

Beauty, Set, Go

This is a review of the January Play! by Sephora subscription box. It only costs $10 per month including shipping & handling. Each month it includes one perfume sample and five deluxe samples of high end cosmetics that are sold at Sephora. This month the approximate retail value of this box is $50.99. Included were the following samples:
  1. Clinique - Almost Lipstick in Black Honey, made in Belgium, .035 oz., approximate retail value of $8.50
  2. Dermablend - Loose Setting Powder, made in the USA, .18 oz., $4.86 retail value
  3. Tarte - Frxxxtion Stick Exfoliating Gel Cleanser, made in the USA, .22 oz.. $4.84 retail value
  4. Caudalie - Resveratrol Lift Face Lifting Moisturizer, made in France, .5 fl. oz., $25.38 retail value
  5. Ouai Haircare - Treatment Masque, .5 fl. oz., $6.66 retail value
  6. Pinrose - Wild Child eau de parfum, $0.75 retail value
I prefer lipstick or gloss rather than a combination such as this Clinique sample. It's a bit less glossy than a gloss and glossier than a lipstick. It's a very dark purply burgundy, I don't think it looks great on my fair skin. It's suppose to look good on any skin tone, but I disagree. They say that they have been making this color since 1971 and that they sell one every three minutes. I really have a hard time believing that. My favorite lipstick is from Bite Beauty and my favorite gloss is Buxom from Bare Minerals.

I'm not a big fan of white setting powders, I prefer more of a skin tone setting powder such a Bare Minerals Mineral Veil. This is the first Dermablend product I have tried. It's suppose to keep your makeup smudge free and transfer resistant for up to sixteen hours which doesn't seem possible.

The Tarte Exfoliating Gel Cleanser is quite strange. It has just a bit of fine exfoliating particles. It goes on black and it doesn't lather. It reduces the pink tone of my fair skin for a few seconds. I'm not a fan of the cleanser being in a stick since it's not sanitary. My favorite cleanser is Josie Maran's Cleansing Oil and my favorite exfoliating product is Kate Somerville's ExfoliKate. I prefer two separate products rather one that combines the two products.

I love products from Caudalie and since they are so expensive I don't purchase them, so I'm always excited to receive samples. This moisturizer sinks in quickly which I appreciate. It also has SPF 20.

I don't tend to take time to use treatment masks for my hair since I use WEN Cleansing Conditioner daily. WEN is so moisturizing that I don't find much need for a mask. It's paraben free, but it still has a long list of ingredients many of which I don't think are healthy, so I'm not a fan of this brand. Why they would put alcohol which is drying in a treatment mask is beyond me. It also doesn't smell that great.

Not a fan of the Wild Child perfume sample, it's smells cheap to me. It's blend of jasmine and gardenia according to their website and on Sephora's website it lists the following: Tiare Flower, Bergamot, Freesia, Gardenia, Jasmine, Frangipani, Vanilla Bean and Amber.

What's your favorite subscription box? This month's box was disappointing. If you received one this month, are you happy with your samples? 1. You get the same box as I do! I've yet to receive a perfume or lipstick from the Play box that I love, but the skincare items are amazing.

    1. I've been enjoying the lipsticks they have sent. Yeah, I'm picky about perfume also. Though I really liked the Nest sample, I bought a different scent in their line. Yeah, it's nice to receive the skincare especially since they are so expensive in the full size!

  2. I received a couple of different items - Love Relentlessly fragrance by Tory Burch (nice!); Youth to the People Age Prevention Cream - and AmorePacific CC Cream...haven't tried the last two as yet.
