34th Blue Apron Review

Mexican Style Fish & Cilantro Sour Cream with Black Beans, Shishito Peppers & toasted Pepitas

A quick note before I start the review. This order was received prior to the government's stay at home orders. I'm a bit behind on my meal kit reviews. Currently, I would not recommend using Blue Apron. They took on too many customers and they are selling out of recipes even if you placed your order four weeks ago. They don't have many recipes to chose from compared to the competition, so it's more of an issue. They also have been canceling orders without any notice. I heard that they were having issues before the crisis and may go out of business if they don't get another investor. I think it's a big mistake taking on so many new customers, these customers are likely not to remain after the crisis is over. Many of their loyal customers are upset that they have pushed aside to accommodate these temporary customers. I'm sticking to my favorite meal kit service Hello Fresh during this time. They have been a day late the last two weeks, but they have been dependable so far. Fingers crossed. Walmart pick-up is our other source of food. Slots open up at midnight and they were running two days behind, now it's four. Publix via Instacart is too difficult to get a time slot for anymore. How has your search for food been lately? I've been stalking Costco online and managed to get a few items. They have a limit of one per membership on hard to find items and it's taking at least seven days to arrive.

We weren't very impressed with this week's recipes and gave them all three out of five stars. The sauce for the above recipe didn't have much flavor. The pollock didn't have a very good texture by cooking it in the skillet. I think it would have tasted better if it had been baked with a different spice. I didn't care for the smokey spice blend they provided. This one has only 560 calories and it's a carb-conscious recipe. It was a healthy portion. It takes about 35 minutes to prepare.

Parmesan & Panko Crusted Cod with Purple Potatoes & Cabbage Slaw

I love purple potatoes, but the Italian spices sprinkled on top ruined them. Some truffle oil would have been so much better. The cabbage slaw really needed something other than just cabbage and dressing. The dressing was made with only mayo, lemon juice, olive oil, salt, and pepper. The breadcrumb topping on the cod was tasty. This recipe needed more ingredients. Not having enough flavorful ingredients tends to be one of the biggest complaints we have with Blue Apron. This one has only 510 calories and it takes 25 minutes to prepare. It was a healthy portion.

Pork Lo Mein with Bok Choy & Celery

Out of all the recipes this week this was our favorite yet still only three out of five stars. We would have preferred some spice added to it. The fresh lo mein noodles were the best part, but it would have tasted better if we had taken out at least 1/3 of them. It was a tasty healthier alternative to take out yet it is still high in calories coming in at 760. This recipe takes about 30 minutes to prepare.

I read somewhere that the food subscription boxes were a big thing right now. I think it's great that they're getting more customers but they need to remember who their loyal people are.

Yes, Blue Apron is the worst. They cancelled their regular customers' orders to fulfill newbies who will likely not remain customers after the crisis. They weren't doing well prior to the crisis, so treating their loyal customers like that will likely backfire. I'm certainly not ordering from them at this time even with a store credit. Most of the recipes are sold out and they have the least to chose from compared to the competition. Hello Fresh has been wonderful, only a day late on some boxes, communication and credits for delay. Green Chef was four days late, Home Chef has a lot of sold out recipes.
