This is a review of our 28th delivery from a weekly food subscription box called Blue Apron for $59.94. We gave all three recipes three out of five stars this week. Calories range from 490 to 850 and preparation time indicated on the recipe cards range from 30 to 50 minutes. Actual preparation time was 42 minutes to over an hour.
Spicy Veracruz Style Shrimp with Brown Rice
We gave this recipe three out of five stars. I was grateful that it had plenty of shrimp since meal kit companies tend to skimp on it. While it was a tasty sweet & sour dish, it just wasn't fabulous. There were too many capers & raisins and they gave us white rice instead of the advertised brown rice. I would have preferred fresh jalapeño rather than pickled. This recipe has only 490 calories yet it was a generous portion. It took 42 minutes to prepare while the recipe card states 30-40 minutes.
Chipotle Lime Chicken Fajita with Sautéed Mushrooms & Onion
We gave this recipe only three stars since it wasn't spicy enough and the instructions need to be improved on. They only gave us four tortillas for two people while other meal kit companies send six. They were overfilled, so they fell apart while eating. The tomatoes were too large and should have been cooked. There wasn't enough Mexican crema nor chipotle chile paste. We skipped the sugar, it was totally not necessary! We skipped the pickled jalapeño they sent us and used some fresh jalapeño we had on hand which tastes so much better and doesn't upset my stomach. The recipe was in serious need of another spice and some green or red pepper. The chicken should have been sliced prior to marinating so that the chicken was covered better. This recipe has 850 calories and preparation time was over an hour. The recipe card states 40 to 50 minutes of preparation time.
Zatar Spiced Beef Burgers with Harissa Mayo & Tahini Zucchini
We gave this one three stars. We would have liked some cheese on the burger and some lettuce. Tzatziki sauce would have tasted so much better on the zucchini rather than tahini. The ground beef was of high quality and delicious. This recipe has 740 calories and preparation time was 50 minutes. The recipe card states 35 to 45 minutes to prepare.
This was the second week in a row that we only gave the recipes three out of five stars so I'm going to skip my next planned order. We are expecting a box from Hello Fresh tomorrow and the next week.
