This is a review of the 26th box of food and recipes we have received from Home Chef. Each week they offer twelve recipes and a fruit basket to chose from. One is a smoothie, one is breakfast and usually three of them are vegetarian. Some are low calorie, low carb and some are gluten free. Each dinner entree is $9.95, smoothies are $4.95 and the fruit is $4.95. Occasionally, there is an special recipe that is higher in price due to the ingredients. They just added dessert for Christmas and for New Years they have added appetizers! I'm looking forward to trying those. This week we gave three recipes five out of five stars, one four stars and one three stars.

Chocolate Candy Cane Smoothie

We both gave this recipe four out of four stars and while cleaning up discovered Hubby left out the cocoa powder by mistake. I wondered why it was so pink! So I don't know if we would have liked it even more if we had added the cocoa. If you have had a Chic-fil-A Peppermint Milkshake before you'll know what this tastes like, just a healthier version since this one comes in at only 218 calories since it uses almond milk & yogurt. I love it when they have healthier yet sweet and delicious smoothies. I think they could have even used less candy cane for even less calories and it would have still been very sweet.

One Skillet Veggie Lasagna with Zucchini, Mushrooms & Garlic Bread

Hubby gave this vegetarian recipe five out of five stars and he's a meat lover! It's so funny because I was a vegetarian when we met and he said I would never get him to eat vegetarian and now he loves it. I gave it four stars. It was very time consuming, so if I made it again I would make enough for four servings so we could serve it twice. Though this was a very generous portion and we were both stuffed and we could have easily saved enough for lunch the next day. I would also use more garlic, spinach, onion and cheese next time. We had a very large zucchini so it was especially filling. This recipe took the two of us around sixty minutes and the recipe called for fifty. It had 671 calories, though it would be less if you saved some for lunch the next day.

Breakfast - Smoked Salmon Flatbread with Dill, Shallots, Capers & Goat Cheese

We had high expectations for this recipe since we love smoked salmon and eat quite a bit of it. We both gave it three stars since it wasn't as good as we expected. It was so dry, so I think a different type of cheese other than goat cheese would have worked better. Also, I think a bit more salmon would have helped. If you ever want to make a quick appetizer that is so delicious, just spread some cream cheese on top a cracker and then add some smoked salmon on top. It's so delicious! You could also serve it on a bagel instead of crackers. We skipped the pickling of the shallot since I can't eat anything pickled due to having IBS. So perhaps it would have tasted better that way though I don't think it would have helped with the dryness. This recipe took me about thirty minutes to prepare and it had 672 calories.

Moroccan Chicken with Citrus Salad & Hazelnuts

For me this recipe was fantastic, so I gave it five out of five stars. It would be absolutely perfect for hot summer months. Hubby on the other hand gave it only two stars. The look on his face when he ate the salad was so funny! He thought it was too sour, but he's not a fan of grapefruit and if he did eat it he'd pour a ton of sugar on it. One of my favorite fruits is grapefruit, so I was delighted by it's flavor in the salad. The only thing I would change is adding about twice the amount of the Ras El Hanout seasoning on the chicken. Also, the instructions on preparing the fruit was confusing. The salad dressing was so easy and simple yet delicious. Simply combine 1 tbsp. of orange juice, 1 tbsp. of grapefruit juice, 1 tsp. honey, 1 minced shallot, 3 mint sprigs, 2 tbsp of olive oil and a pinch of salt & pepper. Viola! Such a wonderful and healthy salad dressing! This recipe took us about thirty minutes to prepare and it had 602 calories.

Healthy Takeout Kung Pao Chicken with Three Peppers, Honey Roasted Peanuts & Brown Rice

Hubby loves Kung Pao chicken and he orders it a lot when we order Asian takeout. I can't eat it due to the sugary sauce that causes me stomach pain. So I was really happy to finally be able to eat Kung Pao chicken! Hubby says this recipe has a very authentic flavor and he gave it five out of five stars. It was surprisingly quick and easy to make at only twenty five minutes. You could even prepare the vegetables the day before to cut down the prep time even more if you knew you were going to arrive home late from work and wouldn't have the energy and time to chop vegetables. I gave it four stars since I would have liked more shrimp and I felt they should have added some large pieces of onion to it. Hubby also used more dried chilies than I would have liked. I took three pieces out of the bag for him and I said I didn't want anymore than that, but he snuck in two more. This recipe had 598 calories and it was a good sized portion. We didn't miss white rice at all, in fact the brown rice worked better since it didn't interfere with the other flavors.
