Wow, this was a super fabulous week from Home Chef! Out of the four recipes we gave three of them five out of five stars and one four stars. Three of them were very festive and perfect for fall and the other one was a healthy version of takeout food.

Halloween Celebration - Spooky Shepherd's Pie with Ground Beef & Mashed Potato Ghosts

Isn't this recipe adorable! Look at that picture! I had a hard time not laughing when I took it. Hubby did an awesome job with the mashed potato ghosts. What a great idea to liven up shepherd's pie. I had to order this recipe because I love shepherd's pie and it was a meal my Mum made often during my childhood. We would have given it five out of five stars instead of four if the potato hadn't had brown spots on it. Rarely are there issues with the ingredients, but this potato had too many brown spots on it that we couldn't use it. Luckily, Hubby had just bought a huge bag of potatoes from Costco. Also, Hubby added additional cheese, but I don't think that was necessary. In addition, Hubby added some heavy cream he had on hand to the mashed potatoes. It was so delicious, wonderfully festive and it's comfort food for sure! This recipe took about forty minutes to prepare and had 822 calories. It was a large portion and very filling.

Caramel Apple Smoothies with Kale, Yogurt & Peanut Butter

One word for this recipe, yummy! It tasted just like a caramel apple yet a healthier version with the addition of kale. I couldn't taste the kale at all, that's the wonderful thing about smoothies, you can add lots of healthy ingredients that you may not be crazy about the taste of and have the flavors that you do love stand out instead. This recipe took about ten minutes to prepare and had 474 calories. It was definitely a sweet treat for us and we gave it five out of five stars. As always, it made two large servings.

Rosemary Cider Chicken with Roasted Apples & Butternut Squash

Wow, this is the perfect quick and low calorie version of a Thanksgiving dinner. If you have to work on Thanksgiving, this is the recipe for you! I can't get over how delicious this was. The rosemary & sage were very fresh, so much so that you could smell them as soon as you took them out of the bag. The butternut squash was already cut into cubes for us so that saved time. The sauce was incredibly tasty and was simply made with shallots, chicken base, cooking sherry, apple cider, minced rosemary, butter and salt. The roasted apples were a wonderful addition to the squash and they still had a bit of crispness even after being baked for twenty-five minutes. It took about forty minutes to prepare and it had 520 calories. We plan to make this recipe again soon and we gave it five out five stars.

Healthy Takeout Orange Chicken with Jasmine Rice, Dried Chiles & Ginger Sesame Spinach Salad

I had to order this recipe because I can't eat orange chicken from a fast food Chinese restaurant due to the thick sugary orange sauce upsetting my stomach. I dare you to try this and tell me it doesn't taste better than that awful thick sauce that's so bad for you! I don't think you even need to add the two teaspoons of sugar this recipe calls for. This is the best orange chicken recipe ever! We will have to make this again soon, leaving out the sugar and we have left over chiles to do so. We used four instead of the six chiles it suggested and it had the perfect amount of spice for us. The spinach salad was very tasty too. It had spinach, fresh ginger, sesame seeds, orange juice, olive oil, salt and pepper. Simple, healthy and easy to make yet so tasty. We gave this recipe five out of five stars and can't wait to make it again. It took a little longer than the suggested thirty-five minutes, but it was worth it due to the incredible flavor. It had 622 calories.

Wow, what a wonderfully tasty & festive week of recipes! This box had to be in the top three. I really like how they do healthier versions of takeout since I not only prefer less calories, but I can't even eat the non healthy versions even if I wanted to. We are excited for the next shipment that will arrive in two days and it will include the following recipes:
  1. Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza
  2. Healthy Takeout Shrimp Singapore Noodles
  3. Blackened Chicken Salad
  4. Pumpkin Pie Smoothie
  5. Seasonal Fruit Selection
