QVC's HomeWorx by Harry Slatkin TSV - Set of Three Candles in Harvest Review

Set of Three 18 oz. Four-Wick Candles in Harvest

This is a review of a Today's Special Value (TSV) that was available for pre-order on July 10th and was on air on the 15th of July. The pre-order item number is H217805 and it's currently listed under H215969. Its TSV price was $49.84 with free shipping, so each candle was only $16.61. Normally his candles sell on average $20 each plus $5.50 shipping for two so that is $22.75 after shipping which is a savings of $6.14 each or $18.42 for the three candles. This set is currently on sale for $52.32 which is only $2.48 more than the TSV price and it includes shipping! The choices are Harvest or Holiday. Harvest includes the following candles:
  1. Harvest Leaves - spiced pumpkin, mandarin, cranberry, fir balsam, and applewood
  2. Autumn Pinecone - fallen pinecones, red oak, fresh eucalyptus, and juniper berry
  3. Pumpkin Carmel Corn - buttery crackle caramel, pumpkin spice, and fresh popped corn
My first impression was that they are much larger than Bath & Body Works candles. They also have much thicker glass, about the thickness of a wine bottle versus Bath & Body Works which are about as thin as an inexpensive drinking glass. As a result, they are much heavier. They are shipped in a large rectangular box with two pieces of styrofoam with cutouts for each candle. While one box had three holes in it and the other had a crushed top they all arrived in perfect condition due to the styrofoam. I'm disappointed in the throw, they vary from 3-6 out of 10. I didn't purchase last years due to the price, but I heard they were weak. As a result, Harry decided to go from three wicks to four this year to improve their throw. I have a large two story open concept living room, so I need a 7-10 throw to really have a noticeable scent in that room. I think these would be best in a one story large room or smaller. Harvest Leaves smells like cranberry with a bit of orange, it's throw is about a 3 or less. You have to get up really close to smell anything. I'm currently burning it and the wicks are already smoking at 50 minutes burn time. In my evaluation of Autumn Pinecone, I don't smell any eucalyptus, oak or pinecones. I may smell berry, but to me, it smells like red delicious apples with a hint of cologne. It has a throw of about a 6. This one smells similar to the Leaves candle he came up for Bath & Body Works that is still sold today. Out of the three, it's my favorite, but I prefer Leaves from Bath & Body Works. Pumpkin Caramel Corn smells like a sour scent with caramel and popcorn. It's described as warm, sweet, buttery caramel laced with pumpkin pie spices and mixed with freshly popped corn. It has a throw of 6. The overly sweet scent smells sour to me maybe others would just find it sweet. It's my least favorite of the three since I'm not a fan of overly sweet nor sour scents. All three have wicks that are very short and thin, so be very careful trimming them. I heard from others that their wicks are short also, so the flames are shorter than normal. These candles are made in Vietnam and have a burn time of approximately 30-55 hours. I find they are burning off quite quickly. It is suggested that you don't burn them for longer than 3-4 hours at a time. Make sure they have a melted pool of wax from edge to edge before you extinguish them or they will tunnel. It takes approximately 30-40 minutes to pool, so make sure you commit to that time prior to lighting them. Their diameter at the top is almost 5 inches whereas Bath & Body Works candles are 4 inches wide.

In conclusion after burning them on and off for four days, I'm very disappointed in these candles so I'll stick with Bath & Body Works candles from now on. I thought they would be a nice birthday gift splurge for myself, oh well. Perhaps, I'll like the HomeWorx Holiday collection better. I will review the holiday collection next, so stay tuned. I wish Harry would work with Bath & Body Works again, his creations with them were fabulous. Leaves, Winter, Evergreen, Fresh Balsam, Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin, Marshmallow Fireside, Gingerbread, Holiday, Twisted Peppermint, and Mint Chocolate are my favorites. The fall candles are available at Bath & Body Works now along with a couple of winter scents. If you ordered this TSV, what's your opinion?

  1. I have Slatkin harvest set from fall 17. I like the all 3 of the fragrances. I also have several BBW candles and in my opinion they are not quite as good as Slatkin. It is my experience that the throw is better from Harry's larger candles.I have a single story open floor plan and sometimes burn two candles at the time to cover the area. Of course I have to find scents that are complimentary when I do that because I don't want to splurge on duplicates now since I haven't burned all I have. Thanks for your TSV announcements and your very informative reviews. Keep up the good work!

    1. Which scents? I only burn one at a time to save $ and to ensure I have enough fall & winter candles to last me year round. The only time I burn more is when we have a power outage at night. yw :)

  2. I ordered them and returned, I didnt really want 3 candles like that I decided
didn't care for the scents, too sweet or something---
I really want the new Peppercorn from BBW and one of their pumpkin ones, usually get my candles at TJMaxx much cheaper and new ones all the time.

    1. Sorry you were dissapointed too, Kate. How much did the PO charge for return shipping? Yeah, lots of people are talking about the Peppercorn one, I'll have to check it out next time I'm in the store.

    2. It was 8 something, but I am not keeping 50$ worth of candles due to cost of returns....
was just at Home Goods the Scentsational brand has some nice candles out have you seen them? Falling Leaves is a favorite and the price is pretty good

    3. I think I read somewhere someone spent $14 to return, probably Q's return label. Haven't been to Home Goods in a long time. I'm addicted to B&BW candles. B4 that I was a Yankee Candle fan and some Woodwicks I like the crackle. I don't stray from brands much.

  3. Thanks for your review! I was curious about the fall scents. I ordered the holiday set, and it arrived yesterday. I really love 2 out of the 3, I'm not crazy about the Winter Hearth, which is disappointing because that is what I was the most excited to try. There is some note that is displeasing to me, I can't figure it out yet though. I will try and burn them though, too much of a pain to return, and I do like the other two scents, so maybe I will gift the one I don't care for. I will stick with my favorite, Winter Fireside, from now on.

    1. yw, Nicole :) Be glad you skipped the Harvest set! The Holiday set is better, but I also only like 2 of the 3 and not enough throw. Is it the smoky incense or sweet brandy maybe? Do you like the B&BW Winter candle or Marshmallow Fireside? If you don't like fireplace smells, then that's why. I think they are similar but HomeWorx is less strong.

    2. I never tried the Marshmallow Fireside, I will have to try that! I do like the fireplace scents, but I think maybe it is the sweet brandy that is throwing me off. I ordered B&BW Sweater Weather after reading your reviews of some of their candles and I really enjoy that, so maybe I will give the other two a try!

  4. I can relate to your let down. On cold smell I was turned off by the cologne like scent in the "Autumn Pinecone" fragrance. It really id a shocker after listening to some people review it as the next best thing to the iphone. I agree with the glass container being heavy and thicker, and the bigger container leading on as a lot more candle when it's not. The powerful throw isn't as important to me anymore as much as it being the true fragrance it is stated to be. I don't want to be choked out of a room I just want the true scent of the fragrance I bought. As for his old scent of "Leaves" I got sick of it years ago. Love is in the nose of the beholder I guess. Thanks for your honest review Wendy.

    1. ty for the laugh, Nahi! Yeah, some are over the top and quite obviously not honest. yw, I take pride in my honest reviews since people are spending their hard earned $ and most are on a budget and have to pick and chose what they buy off their wish list. :)
