Miso Soup

Sashimi Regular - $21.00

Mary Roll & Flaming Yellow Tail Roll - $8.99 & $11.99

This is a review for a Thai restaurant located in the Brier Creek Commons Shopping Center called Champa Thai & Sushi. It's located near the Target & Regal Cinemas. They are open from 11:30 am until 2 pm and reopen at 5 pm and close at 10 pm Monday through Thursday. Saturday they are open from noon until 10 pm and Sunday they are open from 1 pm to 9 pm. Their health score is 99.5 which is excellent. We visited on a Saturday around 2 pm and they were quite busy. We had to wait a moment for them to clean a table before we could sit down.

The waitress was very friendly and prompt to arrive at our table to take our orders. Hubby ordered the Sashimi Regular which has fourteen pieces of sashimi. It comes with soup or salad and Hubby chose the Miso soup. It took nine long minutes for it to arrive. Hubby said it was quite tasty and it had a hint of an unusual cilantro flavor for Miso soup. Eight minutes later our entrees arrived. He was upset to see the size of the pieces of sashimi since there were the smallest he has ever been served and this is an expensive entree coming in at $21.00 for fourteen pieces! Notice in the photo above the tuna pieces are about one third the size they should be. Those three pieces are the equivalent of one normal sized sashimi piece! I ordered the Mary Roll & the Flaming Yellow Tail Roll. The Mary Roll is described as a California roll topped with a bed of spicy tuna mix. I've had the Mary Roll many times at our favorite sushi restaurant, Sushi Thai and it's always excellent. I can't say that for Champa's version. They used the worst, low-quality pieces of the tuna for the poke. They were chewy and fatty which makes for quite an unpleasant texture. The California roll under the poke was falling apart while I was trying to pick it up. The sushi chef didn't roll it tight enough or take enough time to press it together. The Flaming Yellow Tail Roll is described as shrimp tempura, asparagus, cilantro layered with Hamachi (yellowtail) & jalapenos and spicy mayo on top. It was much better, but I was disappointed at how thin the jalapeno was sliced and I couldn't find any cilantro. In the menu photo, they had much thicker jalapeno slices. These thin pieces added very little spice to the roll and the missing cilantro just made for a mild roll instead of the expected spicy roll so it was very disappointing. Note that some of their sushi rolls are discounted to $6.50 Monday through Thursday. The waitress was hard to flag down, she would walk nearby, but she wouldn't look at our table. We had to ask another server for assistance and he was prompt to fulfill our requests.

Their decor needs a touch-up, the chairs and tables are worn and need repainting. It's quite a small restaurant so it can get quite loud when they are busy. Since our first dining experience was expensive & disappointing and the service was severely lacking we shall not return. What's your favorite sushi restaurant in the Triangle?
