Play by Sephora Subscription Box Review - September 2017

It's Fall Good

This is a review of the September Play! by Sephora subscription box. It's only $10 per month including shipping. The retail value of the September box is $55.52. In my September box I received the following samples:
  1. Laura Mercier - Velour Lovers Lip Color in Happy, .09 oz, made in the USA, $21.00 retail value
  2. Belif - The True Cream Moisturizing Bomb, .33 fl. oz., made in Korea, $7.46 retail value
  3. Stila - Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Black, .008 fl. oz., made in Japan, $11.00 retail value
  4. Giorgio Armani - Acqua di Gioia eau de parfum, .05 fl. oz., made in France, $2.11 retail value
  5. Benefit Cosmetics - Gimme Brow Volumizing Fiber Gel in Medium, .03 oz., $7.20 retail value
  6. DevaCurl - Melt Into Moisture Matcha Butter Conditioning Mask, 1.5 fl. oz., made in the USA, $6.75 retail value
There are several different boxes that Sephora sends out monthly and they pick the one that matches your profile the closest. This month two products don't match my profile. I have blonde hair and they sent brow gel for brown hair. I should have received color 01 instead of 03. The DevaCurl hair mask is for curly hair and my hair is straight. So that's really disappointing. I have received the Benefit Cosmetics brow gel several times now. The one in my correct color of 01 I enjoy wearing. It's easy to apply and it doesn't look overly done. I'm more likely to pick that one up and use it than other brands because it takes so little product and it can be applied so quickly. I can't stand brows that look drawn on and this one is more natural looking since it takes so little of the product. The brush can also be used to brush the brows in the direction you prefer. I'm not crazy about the ingredients in the hair mask. The first three are water, alcohol and soybean oil. My favorite sample is the Laura Mercier Lip Color in Happy. It's a warm fuchsia color with a bit of metallic to it. It's a really pretty color and it has a bit of a duo chrome look to it. Applied to the lips the edges are a warm fuchsia color and the center has a bit of a copper metallic look. I'm really loving it and it's perfect for fall. It says it has mango butter so it's moisturizing, but it feels a bit on the dry side to me. As far as matte lipstick goes it's more moisturizing than most. I don't care for the perfume at all. It's notes are mint, brown sugar, lemon, jasmine, peony, pink pepper, cedar wood and labdnaum. Peony is my least favorite flower for a perfume. Anytime a perfume has a peony scent I'm not a fan. My second favorite item in the box is the Belif moisturizer. I'm always up to trying a new moisturizer. I'll be trying that tonight after my shower. I can't remember if I received a Stila Liquid Eye Liner before. My favorite is from Kat Von D. Liquid eye liner takes a bit more time and concentration, so I only use it on days I have enough time and energy to apply it. It's not to be rushed or it will look silly. It's unforgiving in it's application, so you have to be really careful to apply it correctly. If you have the time and patience, it creates a very nice look.

This box was pretty good, just not my favorite so far. The lipstick alone makes the box worth double it's purchase price. The retail value this month was one of the highest of the boxes I have received so far. Have you subscribed to this box yet? If so, were you happy with what you received? If not, why haven't you given it a try?

  1. It looks like a good one. Mine has not arrived yet. I'm hoping I get that lipstick! The hair mask - not so much. I really have not received a great hair product from them yet.

    1. Yeah, the lipstick is fab and for fall. Yeah, I'm really picky about hair products too.

  2. I did this for awhile, but I ended up not liking most of the things and even at 10.00 I didn't think it worth the price.

    1. You should check out some other subscription boxes, maybe you'll find one that better suits you. Have you tried Birchbox, Ipsy, Macy's or Julep?
