18th Blue Apron Subscription Review

Katsu Style Catfish with Black Garlic Mayonnaise & Jasmine Rice

Ingredients

Chicken Meatballs & Fregola Sarda with Kale & Sicilian Tomato Sauce

Ingredients

This is a review of the 18th delivery we received from a food subscription box called Blue Apron. This week I was ill and Hubby was out of town several days, so we didn't make the third dinner which was Top Chef Spice Rubbed Pork with Sweet Red Onion & Black Beans. It was one of the recipes created by the winner of the latest season of the Top Chef television show. I read some reviews that it was disappointing, so we weren't as anxious to make as we were prior to reading the bad reviews. It just doesn't seem like a very creative dish considering it's from the winner of the show. The calories ranged from 710 to 800. The preparation time indicated on the recipe cards ranged from twenty-five to forty-five minutes. Actual preparation time was one hour for both recipes.

Katsu Style Catfish with Black Garlic Mayonnaise & Jasmine Rice

I love any Katsu dish in restaurants, so I was really excited to have Hubby make it at home. We also had black garlic before and absolutely loved it's flavor. Since I was sick my taste buds were off and the black garlic mayo was a turn off, so I skipped it. The Katsu Catfish was so tasty. The fish was flaky and the batter was delightfully crisp. The cabbage with dressing was scrumptious. We gave this recipe four out of five stars. It has 800 calories which seems like a lot considering the ingredients. It was a healthy portion. It took one hour to prepare while the recipe says it will take up to thirty-five minutes.

Chicken Meatballs & Fregola Sarda with Kale & Sicilian Tomato Sauce

I made this recipe when Hubby was out of town. I'm not a fan of making meatballs since long nails are hard to clean after forming the meatballs not to mention I don't like touching raw meat. As a ex-vegetarian it grosses me out and normally I have Hubby do it. I have to eat meat due to IBS. I was a bit intimidated by this recipe, but I pushed myself to do a step at a time and it turned out good. It was very tasty and filling. We try to eat more chicken than beef, so it's nice to have a chicken meatball recipe for a change. I didn't miss the beef at all. I love kale, so it was a nice addition to the fregola sarda. I love the texture of the fregola sarda. If you haven't tried this type of pasta before, you should give it a try. The addition of capers and golden raisins was lovely. This recipe has 710 calories and it was a very filling portion. It took an hour to prepare while the recipe card stated only thirty-five to forty-five minutes.

It was an enjoyable week of recipes, I just wish their preparation times were more accurate and less time consuming. If you haven't tried Blue Apron yet, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. They often use unique ingredients and most of the time the ingredients arrive in good shape and the recipes are tasty. Don't forget to enter my current giveaway

Walmart Beauty Subscription Box - Spring 2017

Embrace Your Beauty

This is a review of a quarterly subscription beauty box from Walmart. It costs only $5 including shipping and handling. The last one I received was in December for winter. The December Beauty Box was much better than this one.  The retail value on this box is $7.48. I received the following products in the Spring Box:
  1. Palmer's Coconut Oil Facial Moisturizer, foil packet, .17 fl. oz., $0.89 retail value
  2. Palmer's Coconut Oil Luminous Hydration Facial Oil, .03 fl. oz., $0.29 retail value
  3. Rimmel Stay Matte Lightweight Liquid Mouse Foundation, .05 fl. oz., $0.24 retail value
  4. Schwarzkopf Gliss Hair Repair Ultra Moisture Shampoo, 1.7 fl. oz., $0.68 retail value
  5. Schwarzkopf Gliss Hair Repair Ultra Moisture Conditioner, 1.7 fl. oz., $0.68 retail value
  6. Jergens Natural Glow Wet Skin Moisturizer with Subtle Color, 2 fl. oz., $2.30 retail value
  7. John Frieda Frizz Ease Daily Nourishment Moisturizing Conditioner, 1.5 fl. oz., $0.97 retail value
  8. Bioré Baking Soda Acne Scrub, 1 oz, $1.43 retail value
I'm not a fan of shampoo and conditioner samples since I have a favorite shampoo, Wen, that I use and I am loyal to it. I also do not have acne, so the Bioré Acne Scrub is of no use to me. I also don't use self tanners, so the Jergens Natural Glow is another product I will not be using. The foil packet of Rimmel foundation is in a color too dark for my skin. I will try the coconut facial oil from Palmer's along with their facial moisturizer. I was hoping the Frizz Ease would be a leave in treatment, but instead it's really just a conditioner that requires that it be rinsed out with water. Receiving boxes like this is what made me cancel the last time. I resubscribed because I noticed they were sending out some full sized products that made it worth resubscribing like a full sized mascara or lipstick. So I'm sad to see there isn't a full sized product in this box along with so many products I just won't use. I think I will give them one more chance and if the next one is also disappointing, I will unsubscribe once again. While it is very inexpensive, if they send me mostly products that I won't use then it's not a bargain at all. If you received a Walmart Beauty Box this month, did you like what I received?

50th Home Chef Review & 50% Off

Thai Pork Lettuce Wraps with Water Chestnuts & Sesame Dipping Sauce

Ingredients

Buttery Chicken & Waffles with Scrambled Eggs & Hot Sauce

Ingredients

This is a review of our 50th delivery from Home Chef. This week we were unable to prepare the 3rd meal due to moving preparation. It was the Bone In Pork Chop with Honey Mustard Cream recipe. We gave one recipe four out of five stars and one recipe three out of five stars. Both recipes are repeats that we loved. Calories ranged from 625 to 945. Preparation time indicated on the recipe cards ranged from twenty-five to thirty-five minutes. Actual preparation time ranged from forty-one to forty-seven minutes.

Thai Pork Lettuce Wraps with Water Chestnuts & Sesame Dipping Sauce

We had this recipe two times prior and it has always been delicious. The sesame dressing is scrumptious. We gave it four out of five stars. It took forty-one minutes to prepare and the recipe indicated up to thirty-five minutes. Calorie count on this one is 625.

Buttery Chicken & Waffles with Scrambled Eggs & Hot Sauce

We had this recipe before and loved it. This time the quality wasn't as good, so we gave it only three out of five stars. The waffles seemed to be low quality frozen waffles. The previous time I ordered them I could smell them before taking them out of the bag. They had a wonderful texture and the scent had a hint of vanilla. They were definitely better quality waffles and tasted so delicious. The ones we received this time had very little flavor. The recipe for the batter didn't use egg so the results looked very different from the recipe card's photo! Very disappointing! Also, the maple syrup was the thinnest I have ever encountered and it wasn't very flavorful. It took forty-seven minutes to prepare and the recipe indicated up to thirty-five minutes. Calorie count on this one is 945.

This week of recipes was disappointing since the Chicken & Waffles were not of the same quality we were sent last time. I'm taking a break from the food subscription boxes since we are relocating and will be too busy to cook. Be sure to check out my 49 other reviews of Home Chef before you go. 19th Blue Apron Subscription Box Review

Chicken Under a Brick with Roasted Vegetables & Italian Dressing

Ingredients

Seared Salmon & Lemon Labneh with Freekeh, Kale & Dates

Ingredients

Fontina Stuffed Pork Chops with Potatoes & Pizzaiola Sauce

Ingredients

This is a review a weekly food subscription box called Blue Apron. This week we gave one recipe five out of five stars, one recipe four stars and one recipe three stars. Calories ranged from 610 to 760. Preparation time indicated on the recipe cards ranged from forty-five to sixty minutes. Actual preparation time was from forty-five to fifty-three minutes.

Chicken Under a Brick with Roasted Vegetables & Italian Dressing

This recipe was disappointing. There wasn't much meat on the chicken so it wasn't very filling. The photo on the recipe card shows half a chicken as a serving, so I was surprised when we only received one half. It didn't have any instructions on cutting it in half to serve two people. The white wine vinegar leaked during shipping. The directions for cooking the potatoes and chicken caused them to be undercooked. The garlic burnt so we had to prepare more. There were a ton of carrots though. We gave this one two to three stars. The recipe indicated preparation time of forty-five to fifty-five minutes. Actual preparation time was forty-five minutes. It has 760 calories.

Seared Salmon & Lemon Labneh with Freekeh, Kale & Dates

We both loved this recipe and gave it five out of five stars. The lemon labneh topping on the salmon was awesome. The freekeh and kale together were delicious. This one indicates fifty to sixty minutes preparation time. Actual preparation time was thirty-nine minutes. It has only 610 calories and it was filling.

Fontina Stuffed Pork Chops with Potatoes & Pizzaiola Sauce

Hubby gave this recipe four out of five stars and I gave it three. The stuffing in the pork chops was scrumptious, but I would have liked a bit more of the cheese. The fontina cheese was a nice complement to the boneless pork chops.  We both prefer pork chops that still have their bone, pork just tastes better cooked that way. I wasn't crazy about the mini red sweet peppers. Red peppers always give me heartburn. The ones pictured on the recipe card were orange. I didn't like the addition of sugar in the sauce, it wasn't necessary. The preparation time indicated on the recipe card is fifty to sixty minutes. Actual preparation time was fifty-three minutes. This one has 670 calories.

Please excuse the use of paper plates in the photos, we are in the process of moving and Hubby already packed our lovely dishes. It was mostly an enjoyable week of recipes. Play! by Sephora Subscription Box Review - April 2017

Step it Up!

This is a review of a monthly cosmetics subscription box from Sephora called Play! by Sephora. It's only $10 a month and it includes 6 samples. This month's box has a retail value of $31.48. That's one of the lowest values I have received so far. For the month of April I received the following products:
  1. Philosophy - Made Simple Face Cleanser, made in the USA, 1 fl. oz., $3.67 retail value
  2. Make Up Forever - Waterproof Eyeliner, made in Germany, .01 oz. , $5.25 retail value
  3. Peter Thomas Ross - Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream, made in the USA, .25 fl. oz., $8.12 retail value
  4. Sephora - Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover, made in France .84 fl. oz., $3.72 retail value
  5. MIU MIU - L'Eau Bleue eau de parfum, made in France, .04 fl. oz., $2.72 retail value
  6. Smashbox - Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer, made in the USA, .25 fl. oz., $8.00 retail value
I have used the Philosophy facial cleanser before and I liked it. I like using the travel size in the shower since it lasts a long time and it doesn't take up much space. I'm not fond of makeup that is waterproof since it's so hard to remove, so I'm really happy they sent a waterproof eye makeup remover. My eyes and skin are really sensitive, so I hope this makeup remover doesn't irritate my skin and eyes. I really like the Peter Thomas Ross brand, so I'm always happy to receive a sample. This moisturizer has a gel consistency which I really like since it's really easy to apply and it sinks in quickly. Those type of moisturizers aren't usually very moisturizing, but this one is. If it wan't so expensive, this is one I would purchase in the full size. The perfume is lovely. It has notes of lily of the valley, wild rose and akigalawood. It has a woodsy, floral, powdery scent. I find it to be a comforting scent. I'm disappointed that I didn't receive a lipstick this month. Lipstick or lip gloss is my favorite makeup. If I don't feel like wearing makeup, I still apply some lipstick or lip gloss. What's the beauty product you can't live without?

If you received a Play! by Sephora box this month, are you happy with your samples?  Check out my Play! by Sephora Pinterest Board to see what I have received in my previous boxes. Also, check out my Subscription Box Pinterest Board to see what other boxes I've subscribed to over the years.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Review - Cancún, Mexico

Calle Retorno del Rey #36
Zona Hotelera
77500 Cancún, Q.R., Mexico
+52 998 881 0808

Lobby

Waiting Area

Last August Hubby & I visited Cancún for a business trip. His company chose to put us up at The Ritz Carlton. We had never stayed at a Ritz Carlton hotel before nor had we been to Mexico. When we arrived there was a long wait at the front desk to get our room key. We had arrived via an airport shuttle bus with lots of coworkers so the line was very long. I recommend getting something to eat instead, if you find the line is long. They didn't speed up the process due to the long line, they spent a long time with each customer. One of the employees handed out some much appreciated cold drinks while we stood and waited. There are very few chairs in the lobby. After having waited all that time we were told we would have to come back for our key since our room wasn't ready. It appeared most customers before us received their key or we wouldn't have waited in such a long line.

We went to get something to eat at one of the four restaurants inside the hotel around 3 pm on a Thursday. We chose the El Café Mexicano restaurant and there were only a couple of customers at that hour. I didn't take any photos since I was completely exhausted from our long journey from the US and we were starving thanks to American Airlines only serving snacks. Hubby had the Nachos with chicken for about twelve US dollars. I had the Chicken Tacos with green sauce for about eleven US dollars. We both really enjoyed our meals. Service was friendly and prompt. We ate at this restaurant a second time on our last day for breakfast. The breakfast buffet had a lot to offer and it was also delicious. You have to try their fruit and bacon, scrumptious. I highly recommend this restaurant. While it's a bit on the pricey side, it's comfortable and it's peaceful with a lovely view of the pool and ocean yet in the comfortable air conditioning. The decor is similar to the rest of the hotel, you wouldn't know it was a Mexican restaurant by looking at it. It was a welcome break from the long, stressful day of travel. After lunch we were able to retrieve our room key at the front desk and we walked to our room.

King Bed

Marble Bathtub

Marble Shower

Separate Toilet Room

Double Sinks

Our first room was a room on the side of the building with a view of the beach only from the balcony. To see the ocean you have to go out on to the balcony and look over the edge past the wall between balconies, see 1st photo below.

View from Room on the Side of the Building

We stayed in that room our first night only to wake to construction noise the next morning. At first I thought they must be making a repair in a nearby room and it would soon end, but after several hours we realized it wasn't going to stop anytime soon. We called down to the front desk to inquire about the construction noise and we were informed that they were remodeling one of their restaurants and the noise would last all day and for our entire stay. Imagine my shock since I had just lived through nine long, stressful months of construction noise in our subdivision at home. I flew all the way to Mexico and I still couldn't get away from construction noise. I was shocked! We asked if we could be moved to a room that was far enough away that we would no longer hear the noise. They called us back about half an hour later and offered us an upgrade to a room that has a view of the ocean from the room itself not just the balcony. The concierge took us to our new room to make sure it was acceptable and then we moved our luggage to that room. The view from that room was amazing, see 2nd photo below. I highly recommend upgrading to a room that directly faces the beach!

View from Room Facing the Beach

The bed the first night felt fine and we both slept due to complete exhaustion. The second and third nights I didn't sleep very well. The comforter and the mattress pad have feathers in them and I just can't stand sleeping on that weird texture. I found it so strange that in such a hot climate the comforter had feathers to keep you warm. It was too hot! The room was very clean and I'm picky about that. The air conditioning was very loud since it's located in the closet and it ran constantly due to the extreme heat and humidity. The a/c in the first room didn't work very well, the room felt too warm and humid. The a/c in the second room kept the room cool enough. The television was smaller than I expected for such an expensive room. They have one American channel that is located in Florida. So we were able to keep up with the US news and learned a hurricane would arrive just as we were leaving on Sunday. We had to pay extra for wi-fi internet service. Hubby didn't tell me how much it was since he knew that it would upset me. It should be included! It worked very well and the internet speed was good. The maids were awesome and they work so very hard. They even dust off the balcony floor and chairs and wash the windows daily! I was very impressed. The windows get dirty quickly since every morning they are soaking wet from the humidity. We had turn down service one night. The maid left two chocolates and two bottles of water.

Turn Down Service

There are larger bottles of water in the room, but they aren't free. There is also a mini bar with alcohol, wine, sodas, candy and snacks. I recommend going across the street to one of the convenience stores to purchase these at a lower cost. You can also purchase chilled bottled water at the El Café Mexicano restaurant which we did at breakfast for our trip home. Room service is a must that you have to treat yourself to. So very impressive! I have reviewed several room service experiences, so be sure to check those out: Part IPart II and Part III. It was Hubby's decision to dine in the room, so I was guilt free! You won't regret it!

I recommend dining at several of the restaurants across from the hotel. Our favorite restaurant was Harry's Grill. We also enjoyed Porfirio's. The third restaurant we tried in that location was Fred's House, but I can't recommend it. There is so much traffic that I don't recommend walking to the restaurants even if you can stand the heat. We never had to call for a taxi in advance since there was always one waiting out front. They have only the large taxis waiting which are American Chevrolet Suburbans with the a/c on full blast. The taxi drivers were very friendly and helped me get out of the vehicle since it's quite a step down getting out. I recommend you ask for their business card so that you can call them to pick you up after you are done eating. You can ask at the restaurant's reception desk to call them for you, if you don't want to incur international cell phone charges. We only had to wait about five minutes after we called them to pick us up. They then took us to the convenience store and then back to the hotel. It only takes a couple of minutes since it's not far. If I remember correctly it was about ten US dollars plus tip and they take American cash or Mexican pesos.

The air conditioning in this hotel needs replacing. The tiny elevators and some of the hallways are too warm and humid. The elevators are very small just as they are in Europe. They fit four adults comfortably. Six is the max, if you try to squeeze in more people the alarm goes off and it won't move. There is a ice machine in the hall, but the room is very warm. The pool is large and it was never crowded. There are plenty of chaise lounge chairs on the pool's patio and on the beach. The staff is very attentive delivering drinks, food and fresh towels.  There is also a café called The Caribe Bar & Grill located on the patio. They have cantinas that you can rent during the day and at night they serve a very expensive romantic dinner in them starting at 7 pm with live music.

We also dined at one of the ballrooms for an awards banquet. The service was impeccable. Each course was presented flawlessly and the food was delicious. With three hundred people in the room it was too hot. Again, the air conditioning needs updating. My other complaint is that the mixed drinks we had during a break at the bar didn't have much alcohol in them. At the table, my wine glass never went empty. We were very impressed with the dinner service. We also attended a dinner party outside on the beach. Those drinks had plenty of alcohol in them. It is still very hot outside even in the evening at sunset.

Overall we were impressed with the hotel and I recommend it if you are not sensitive to the heat & humidity and don't mind that some parts of the hotel are a bit warm. An upgrade to an ocean view room is a must along with room service. The ocean view room is a must for those that can't be in the heat very long, but still want to enjoy the view of the beach for hours. If you are visiting in the summer months be sure to request a room far from construction noise since that is when they do remodeling. The previous year they remodeled the Sushi Bar. The taxi driver said the busy season in Cancún is from Thanksgiving until after New Years. He also said it's very hot & humid year round. It was near 100 degrees everyday we were there and it it's extremely humid around 90%. If you think Florida is humid you won't complain as much after being in Cancún! Stay tuned for Part II which will feature exterior photos and information. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments section below. Have you ever been to Mexico? If so, which hotel did you stay in and what was your experience like? Check out my Cancún Pinterest Board to see everything I have reviewed so far.
