Walmart Beauty Subscription Box Review - December 2016

Treat Yourself This Season with Beauty - Trendsetter

This is a review of the quarterly cosmetics subscription box from Walmart. It only costs $5 including shipping and handling. The retail value for this box is $11.75, compared to other beauty subscription boxes it's not that great of a value, but it may still be worth it for some. I was in need of some more mascara and I find drugstore mascara equal to many expensive brands, so for me it was worth the $5. For the forth quarter of 2016, they sent out the following products for those under 35 years old:
  1. Garnier - Whole Blends Green Apple & Green Tea Shampoo & Conditioner, .34 fl oz each, $0.17 approximate retail value
  2. Covergirl - Lashblast Volume Mascara, full size, $6.15 retail value
  3. Dove - Deep Moisture Body Wash, 1.8 fl oz, $0.59 retail value
  4. Curél - Hyrdra Therapy Wet Skin Moisturizer, 2 fl oz, $1.99 retail value
  5. Dove - Advanced Care Cool Essentials Antiperspirant Deodorant, .5 oz. $0.84 retail value
  6. Pond's - Rejueveness Anti-wrinkle Cream, 1.75 oz, $2.01 retail value
Mind you there are a couple of variations to this box, but still in the same range of retail value. While I'm not under thirty-five, I chose it because last time I was subscribed I found they sent less of a value for those over thirty-five and less exciting products. That box is called the Classic Box and this one I am reviewing is the Trendsetter Box. I use Dove's antiperspirant deodorant, so I recommend that, though the ingredients aren't the healthiest, it works. I've had a sample of the Dove moisture body wash and it was moisturizing, but yet again the ingredients aren't healthy, so I prefer brands sold at Vitacost. If you need a moisturizer for your face and you can't afford the expensive brands, Ponds is ok, but Olay is much better. I'm not a big fan of drugstore shampoos due to their ingredients, so I can't recommend them, but the samples are handy for travel.

Also, included were coupons for $1 off InStyle Magazine, People and StyleWatch plus $4 off Curél. It's not the most exciting subscription box, but if you're on a tight budget and enjoy drugstore cosmetics, this is a treat for you at only $5. Sometimes one just enjoys receiving a surprise in the mail and at $5 this one is a good choice. What's your favorite subscription box?

14th Sun Basket Delivery Review & Three FREE Meals for You

Orange Almond Smoothies

Ingredients

Swedish Meatballs with Lingonberry Jam & Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients (click on images to enlarge)

Avgolemono Chicken Soup with Lemon, Egg and Cauliflower Rice

Ingredients

Spicy Mexican Scramble

Ingredients

This is a review of a weekly food subscription box called Sun Basket. We gave one recipe five out of five stars, one recipe four stars and two recipes two stars. Three of the four recipes are gluten free and paleo and one recipe is also vegetarian. Calories range from 250 to 720 and preparation time ranges from five to forty minutes.

Orange Almond Smoothies

I love that Sun Basket offers two breakfasts for the price of one dinner. The competition only offers one. I love smoothies, but sometimes I don't have the time to make five smoothies a week which is offered from Green Blender, so this is a nice substitution. This smoothie tasted like an Orange Julius yet it's much healthier. This recipe uses almonds and almond milk and extremely delicious Cara Cara oranges. If you haven't tasted Cara Cara oranges before you need to run to the nearest grocery store that carries them and buy them. It has a richer, juicier and sweeter taste. It had 250 calories and it only took a few minutes to prepare. It's a paleo, vegetarian and gluten free recipe.

Swedish Meatballs with Lingonberry Jam & Mashed Potatoes

My Scottish Mum served me and my English & Swedish father Swedish meatballs on a regular basis during my childhood, so I'm a big fan and had to order this recipe. I'm quite critical, so I was quite delighted that I fell in love with the flavors of this recipe, this one is very impressive. I gave it five out of five stars! Hubby gave it four of five stars, but what does he know he doesn't have any Swedish heritage, so let's discount his evaluation. I agree with him that it should have been ground beef or lamb instead of turkey for more supreme flavor, but turkey is a healthier choice. We were disappointed that we were only given one potato, it was suppose to be a half pound of Yukon Gold potatoes. To make this one more delicious, I suggest more of the spice which is all spice and nutmeg and the addition of some brown sugar would have made it perfection. Also, we would have liked more of the jam, it seemed like too small a portion for two people, but it was of high quality and so tasty. The egg broke during shipping, but that's the first time that has happened. Their packaging is really good, being the busy time of the year for shipping damage is more likely to happen. This recipe had 720 calories and it took about thirty-five minutes to prepare.

Avgolemono Chicken Soup with Lemon, Egg and Cauliflower Rice

We both gave this recipe two out of five stars which is a very low rating which we rarely give Sun Basket. In the recipe's photo they show something red, but none of the ingredients included anything red, maybe that was the issue, something flavorful was missing. This one was very bland. We waited until the sixth day to prepare, they recommend cooking within five days of delivery and so the cauliflower was bad and Hubby substituted some jasmine rice. This one has only 580 calories and it takes up to forty minutes to prepare. It's a paleo and gluten free recipe.

Spicy Mexican Scramble

Hubby and I both love really spicy food, but we found this one to be too spicy, so that was quite the surprise. Hubby gave it three out of five stars and I gave it two stars. I made mine into a taco instead of having the tortilla on the side. It's a vegetarian, gluten free and paleo breakfast with only 270 calories. Preparation time was around fifteen minutes.

While this wasn't our favorite week of recipes from Sun Basket, the Swedish Meatballs and the smoothie were so very impressive. We look forward to our next shipment arriving tomorrow. I highly recommend you give this meal kit a try and at 50% off how can you resist! Click on the link below to receive your discount.

Blue Apron 15th Delivery Review

Chicken Khao Soi with Crispy Wonton Noodles

Ingredients

Blackened Catfish with Veracruz Sauce

Ingredients

Pork Chops & Freekeh Salad with Brussels Sprouts & Clementine Chutney

Ingredients

This is a review of our 15th delivery from a weekly food subscription box called Blue Apron. We gave one recipe five out of five stars and two recipes three stars. Calories ranged from 530 to 700 calories and preparation time ranged from thirty-five to fifty-five minutes.

Chicken Khao Soi with Crispy Wonton Noodles

Hubby gave this recipe five out of five stars and I gave it four stars. It was scrumptious! The fresh noodles and crispy noodles were delicious along with lots of chicken, wonderful spice and kale. I felt there was too much onion though. Hubby said it was easy to make the crispy noodles which was a nice surprise. I tend to really enjoy the Asian recipes from Blue Apron and this one was no exception. This recipe had 700 calories and it took forty eight minutes to prepare. The recipe indicated it would take thirty-five to forty-five minutes to prepare. It was a generous portion of food.

Blackened Catfish with Veracruz Sauce

Hubby and I both love catfish, but we felt the this was of low quality though it was a large portion. Hubby gave this recipe three out of five stars and I gave it two stars since I only ate half of it due to dislike. The Veracruz sauce was tart and we didn't like the combination of potatoes and tomatoes. The raisins and olives were lost in the tartness of the sauce. The spice blend made with smoked paprika, oregano, coriander and cumin gave us heartburn. We appreciated that they gave us rice flour to coat the catfish which is healthier than regular flour. This recipe had 530 calories and it took forty-eight minutes to prepare. The recipe indicated it would take up to fifty-five minutes to prepare.

Pork Chops & Freekeh Salad with Brussels Sprouts & Clementine Chutney

We both gave this recipe three out of five stars. The chutney tasted like marmalade which wasn't a good combination with the pork. We didn't care for the freekeh salad and it made us gassy. The brussels sprouts were of a low quality which was quickly discovered when they began to stink as they were cooked. There wasn't enough apple cider vinegar to flavor the dish well. This dish had 600 calories and it took one hour to prepare. The recipe indicated that it would take up to fifty-five minutes to prepare.

While this week's recipes weren't our favorite, the previous weeks were very good. Don't forget to enter my current giveaway before you go and check out my Pinterest Blue Apron Board to check out all of the Blue Apron recipes we have made so far. bareMinerals Countdown to Gorgeous Advent Calendar Review - December 2016

Two Lash Dominations, Moxie in Daredevil, Risk Taker, Smooth Talker, Girl Next Door, Trail Blazer, Crowd Pleaser, Skin Longevity, Lip Oil Balm in Nude Passion, Plumberry Pop, Rose Passion & Pink Passion

bareMinerals Advent Calendar Inside Look (for a closer look, click on image)

Original Mineral Veil, Tinted Mineral Veil, Glee Radiance, Blush in Lola and Tropical Sunset, Eyecolor in Vanilla Sugar, All Spice, Chime, Ethereal & Thankful

When I heard about this advent calendar from bareMinerals I became very excited until I saw the price of $79. I thought it was overpriced though they claim it's a $205 retail value. So when I heard it went on sale for $59 and I had a coupon for $10 off plus 7% cash back from Mr. Rebates, I immediately purchased it. I ordered it even though it was November 26th and it wouldn't arrive by December 1st in order to start opening it on time. It took them seven days before they even shipped it! So it arrived twelve days later on December 6th. I had heard they were slow to ship, so I was expecting a long wait. I'm really glad I didn't buy it at the original price because the Moxie lip glosses are so tiny! I've bought mini sets of Moxie and Buxom lip glosses from Sephora many times over the years and they were never this small. The sample sized Moxies from Sephora are .07 fl. oz. and these are only .02 fl. oz., making them only 29% of the size of those from Sephora! The full sized version is .15 fl. oz., so that makes these samples only 13% of the original size whereas the typical sample size is 47% of the original size! These samples are worth only $2.39 each. They are even more narrow than the width of a pencil and certainly not as tall as they appear on the bareMinerals' website. With 24 samples that makes each one cost $2.45 each at the sale price of $59. At the $49 price (using coupon) each sample costs only $2.04. Each sample is $3.29 each at the original price of $79. I received a free gift which is shown above, it's the brow brush which is a full sized product and worth $16. I also received free shipping and handling. So at only $2.04 per sample, I am happy. I certainly would not have been happy with the original price. Included in this calendar are the following product samples:

  • Day One - Marvelous Moxie Lip Gloss in Trail Blazer, .02 fl. oz., $2.39 retail value
  • Day Two - Blush in Tropical Sunset, .02 oz, $14 retail value
  • Day Three - Pop of Passion Lip Oil Balm in Nude Passion, .03 oz., $4.36 retail value
  • Day Four - Tinted Mineral Veil, .03 oz, $22 retail value
  • Day Five - Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara, .05 fl. oz., $2.56 retail value
  • Day Six - Eyecolor in All Spice, .01 oz., $7.50 retail value
  • Day Seven - Marvelous Moxie Lip Gloss in Crowd Pleaser (gold with glitter), .02 fl. oz., $2.39 retail value
  • Day Eight - Skin Longevity Vital Power Infusion, .25 fl. oz., $7.05 retail value
  • Day Nine - Pop of Passion Lip Oil Balm in Pink Passion, .03 oz., $4.26 retail value
  • Day Ten - All Over Face Color in Glee Radiance, .02 oz, $14 retail value
  • Day Eleven - Marvelous Moxie Lip Gloss in Risk Taker (copper with glitter), .02 fl. oz., $2.39 retail value
  • Day Twelve - Eyecolor in Chime, .01 oz., $7.50 retail value
  • Day Thirteen - "Be original, Be natural, Be good" Keychain, unknown value
  • Day Fourteen - Pop of Passion Lip Oil Balm in Rose Passion, .03 oz., $4.26 retail value
  • Day Fifteen - Original Mineral Veil, .03 oz., $22 retail value
  • Day Sixteen - Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara, .05 fl. oz., $2.56 retail value
  • Day Seventeen - Eyecolor in Ethereal, .01 oz., $7.50 retail value
  • Day Eighteen - Marvelous Moxie in Smooth Talker (pink with glitter), .02 fl. oz., $2.39 retail value
  • Day Nineteen - Pop of Passion Lip Oil Balm in Plumberry Pop, .03 oz., $4.36 retail value
  • Day Twenty - Eyecolor in Vanilla Sugar, .01 oz., $7.50 retail value
  • Day Twenty-one - Marvelous Moxie in Daredevil (purple burgundy glitter),  .02 fl. oz., $2.39 retail value
  • Day Twenty-two - Marvelous Moxie in Girl Next Door (peach glitter), .02 fl.oz., $2.39 retail value
  • Day Twenty-three - Blush in Lola .02 oz., $14 retail value
  • Day Twenty-four - Eyecolor in Thankful, .01 oz., $7.50 retail value

The two mineral veils are full sized and the retail value of the key chain is unknown. The total retail value comes out to $167.25 yet they claim it's worth $205. I don't know how much the keychain is worth, but it's certainly doesn't make up the $37.75 difference in value!

I love the Moxie lip gloss and if you haven't tried it before, I highly recommend you do. While you will need to reapply after eating and drinking, it feels really good on the lips. It takes a lot of time to get the product out of the small tube since very little comes out of the tube on the applicator. I had not tried the Pop of Passion Lip Oil Balm before, it's not opaque, but it is moisturizing. I've enjoyed the mineral veils, blush and eye color for a least ten years now and I recommend them. The mineral veil isn't great for those over forty though, it does tend to make your pores and wrinkles stand out more. I've always enjoyed their mascaras, but I haven't tried this new one yet.

Play! by Sephora Subscription Box Review - December 2016

The Partygoers

This is a review of a monthly cosmetics subscription box from Sephora called Play! It's only $10 per month including shipping! Each month they send six samples of high end cosmetics sold at Sephora. The approximate retail value of this month's box is $40.81. Included in the December box were the following products:
  1. Make Up Forever - Skin Equalizer Smoothing Primer, .16 fl. oz., made in Japan, $5.92 retail value
  2. Urban Decay - All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray, .5 fl. oz., made in the USA, $7.50 retail value
  3. Bobbi Brown - Smokey Eye Mascara, .1 oz, made in Italy, $15 retail value
  4. Sephora - Cream Lip Stain in the color Always Red, .03 fl. oz., made in Italy, $2.48 retail value (received two)
  5. Drybar - Detox Dry Shampoo, .8 oz, made in the USA, $7.42 retail value
  6. Elizabeth & James - Nirvana Bourbon Perfume, .05 fl. oz., $2.49 retail value (missing from box)
I received two lip stains and the perfume was missing from my box. I emailed Sephora about the mistake, but I haven't heard back yet and it's been three days. I may have to call and see if I can reach them, but I'm not a fan of staying on hold waiting for a representative. If you're a subscriber, have you ever had any missing products from your box? This is my first time experience having a missing product, so I don't know if they give a credit or ship the missing product. It's quite disappointing since there are only six items in the box and I have no need for red lipstick and I was looking forward to trying the perfume.

I'm a bit sick of receiving primer samples since I have more than I can use and a little goes a long way. The Make Up Forever primer comes in a medium skintone. It dries really quickly and leaves a smooth surface on the skin. My favorite primer is Laura Geller's Spackle and Julep's Primer.

I've received a sample of the Urban Decay Setting Spray before in a subscription box. I'm not a big fan since it's so wet. It feels like you are spraying water on your face after going to all the trouble of doing your makeup. It makes me nervous that I'm going to use to much and ruin my makeup. Though I did hear in line at Trader Joe's from a cashier that it works really well for her after the customer before me complimented her makeup and it's staying power. It doesn't have much of a scent, it would have been nice if they added a little lavender essential oil. Maybe I'll give it a try again. I'm more likely to use it in the summer since it has a cooling effect and it will dry faster.

I've also received a sample of Bobbi Brown's mascara before. I recall it was nice, but not worth purchasing since it's so expensive. I find drugstore brands are just as good as the more expensive brands, so mascara isn't a product I splurge on. I find some mascara samples are very dry and you only get one or two applications out of it. Be sure not to wait too long to use a mascara sample since I find they dry out quickly and don't have as long as a shelf life as do their full size versions.

I received two of the lip stain samples by mistake. I'm not a fan of wearing red, so I was disappointed to receive the lip stain in the color Always Red. I think red lipstick looks nice on a small percentage of the population. It's so pretty on those that can carry it off though. Thankfully, it looks a bit darker on the lips than in the container which was very difficult to open. It goes on matte and I find it makes my teeth look whiter which happens when a lipstick has some blue color in it. It feels a bit dry on the lips. For someone who has a habit of rolling their lips together it's not a pleasant feeling. The applicator is a bit rough, it needs more padding. It transferred to my teeth, so be sure to use a tissue to blot. It also transferred to my drinking straw. I'm so use to wearing gloss that this would take a bit of getting use to. I'll wear it in the house, perhaps I'll be daring enough to wear it out if I can find blush and eye shadows that look good with it. Any suggestions on that?

I use to dislike receiving dry shampoo samples, but I've learned that they are helpful the day after shampooing with Wen when I didn't take enough time to fully rinse it out and my hair looks a bit oily as a result. It reduces that oily look on the hair and gives it a bit of volume like a light hairspray would. This one has less of a white powder look to it, so I found that I didn't need to brush through it though I have blonde hair. Perhaps if your hair is a dark color you would still need to brush or comb through it. I have been enjoying my dry shampoo samples, but I doubt I'd purchase a full bottle. It's one of those products I can live without, so I'd rather spend it on lipstick or lip gloss.

I'm sad to say that the perfume sample was not included in my box. I'm not usually a fan of receiving perfume samples, but this was a scent I wanted to try and the nearest Sephora is almost an hour drive one way.

What's your favorite subscription box? This month's box was a disappointment to me. 13th Sun Basket Delivery Review & $30 Off Coupon

Pacific Cod with Lemongrass & Broken Rice

Ingredients (click on photos to enlarge)

Seared Pork with Figs & Quinoa Dried Cherry Salad

Ingredients

Steaks with Satsuma Escarole Salad & Chimichurri

Ingredients

This is a review of a weekly meal kit subscription box called Sun Basket. This is our 13th delivery and we gave one recipe five out of five stars and two recipes four stars. Calories ranged from 640 to 710 and preparation time indicated on the recipe cards ranged from thirty to forty minutes. Actual preparation time was forty to fifty-five minutes. All three recipes are gluten free and two out of the three are paleo.

Pacific Cod with Lemongrass & Broken Rice

Hubby gave this recipe four out of five stars and I gave it three. There was so much rice I couldn't eat it all and it was a large portion of cod. We felt it needed more bok choy. We would have preferred it to be spicier, it needed more garam masala, cilantro, lime and lemongrass paste. I think the cilantro should have been chopped. It was a tasty meal, I just thought a few changes would make it perfect. This one has 710 calories and it took Hubby forty minutes to prepare. It's a paleo and gluten free recipe.

Seared Pork with Figs & Quinoa Dried Cherry Salad

Hubby gave this one five out of five stars and I gave it four stars. The dried cherries, rainbow quinoa, radicchio, pistachios, dried fig and fresh rosemary were so scrumptious. If you've never had radicchio before you must try it. One of my favorite recipes is simply made with radicchio, curry powder, mayo and canned tuna. So delicious, especially if you let the mixture cure in the refrigerator for a couple of hours, so that the curry mixes with the rest of the ingredients. We cooked this recipe six days after we received it and everything was still fresh, they recommend using ingredients within five days. It was a generous and filling portion that is paleo and gluten free. It had 710 calories and it took Hubby fifty-two minutes to prepare.

Steaks with Satsuma Escarole Salad & Chimichurri

I gave this recipe four out of five stars and Hubby gave it three stars. The Chimichurri seasoning blend consisting of cumin, sweet smoked paprika and granulated garlic was so delicious! The salad dressing base made with maple syrup, cinnamon, coriander and sherry vinegar was sweetly scrumptious like candy! It was a healthy portion and it's a paleo and gluten free recipe with only 640 calories. It took Hubby fifty-five minutes to prepare.

It was another enjoyable week of recipes which we have come to expect from Sun Basket since they are our favorite. I highly recommend you snag my $30 coupon below by clicking on the link and give this subscription box a try today. I'm sure you will enjoy it and have fun cooking again. I recommend Kitchen Aid's food processors. I use mine weekly to make homemade dog food and cookies. The smaller ones are great for sauces. The collapsable shelving unit would be great for the garage, but I wonder how sturdy this one is. The Cottage Farm Succulent Collection looks lovely. I know many will be happy to see a Lock & Lock TSV. Don't see anything I'm dying to order, maybe they will temp me later with other TSVs for the month of January. So what are you going to preorder? Thanks to the ladies that recommended the Barefoot Dreams Wrap, I gave in and ordered it and I'm very happy I did. Wow, it's so cozy and warm! I will get a lot of use out of it for sure.  I was nervous about ordering it because of the mixed reviews and sizing issues. It's a bit on the large size, but I like that since it's more comfortable that way. Yes, the sleeves are tight on the arms, but since the sleeves are so long that's perfect for me so that I can push them up and they stay put. Otherwise, the sleeves would be too long for me since I'm 5' 4". Here's some other TSVs that are interesting, but information is not yet available for:

29th - Dyson Cleaning

I will update the above TSVs as soon as the information is released which is usually only seven days or less prior to air date. So be sure to check back for updates. I know many will be anxiously awaiting to hear what will be offered in the It Cosmetics TSV and I'll be one of them. Never heard of Dafni Beauty, have you? A quick google search shows that they sell hair straightening brushes. I know many are anxious for another Vitamix TSV, but I recommend the Blendtec brand instead. The Vitamix tamper is a pain, always having to push down on the ingredients to get it to blend. Plus, Vitamix's customer service is awful when trying to make a claim on it's warranty. In addition, there is a part that needs to be replaced often. It wears out and breaks during use. I recommend Green Blender's subscription service for healthy smoothie ingredients and recipes sent to your doorstep.
