This is a review of our 11th box from Hello Fresh which is a weekly food subscription box for $69 including shipping. They offer the choice of 3-5 recipes per week for 2-4 people and the choices are: classic, vegetarian and family. The vegetarian box is $59 for two people. The family box includes three meals for four people for $105. We order the classic box for two people. This week we gave all three recipes three out of five stars. Last week's recipes were much more enjoyable.

Pan Roasted Chicken with Dijon Mushroom Sauce & Brown Rice

We weren't crazy about the dijon sauce, it would have been so much better with more ingredients. That's one thing I'd like to see them change, add more ingredients per recipe. While it does save time to have less ingredients sometimes, in this case adding some white wine wouldn't have cost more time. Dijon mustard, sour cream, water, chicken concentrate, salt & pepper just made for too strong of a dijon flavor with too much sourness. Quite a bit of the thyme had turned brown and had to be thrown out. I'm not a big fan of brown rice since I find it too dry and I don't like the grainy texture, I prefer jasmine rice. The chicken and mushrooms were tasty. Hubby gave this recipe three out of five stars and I gave it two.  It was filling and we had leftover rice which we fed to our dogs. It took longer than the thirty-five minutes indicated. It's a gluten free recipe and it had 589 calories.

Nir's Lamb Stuffed Zucchini with Spiced Lentil Stew

Since we love lamb, I had to order this recipe. We recently learned of the Ras el Handout spice blend and have been enjoying it in several recipes lately. I think this recipe needed more of that spice, it just wasn't spicy enough for us. The lentils were too hard since the recipe had us cook them only fifteen minutes which wasn't long enough nor were they soaked overnight to help make them tender. A quick google search shows much longer cooking times with overnight soaking in water. So the lentils basically ruined the stew and I barely ate any of it. Due to the tomato base I couldn't share it with our dogs, so most of mine went in the trash, minus a few peas for the dogs. We thought jasmine rice or pilaf instead of the lentils would have made this dish delicious and worth repeating. The ground lamb and zucchini were the best part of this recipe though it didn't look appetizing to me. Perhaps if the lamb had been shaped into meatballs instead, it would have looked much more appetizing. This gluten free recipe had 634 calories and it took about forty-five minutes to prepare.

Seared Steak with Spring Veggie Succotash & Mint Chive Pesto

I'm very picky about mint sauce, so I was a bit surprised I liked this one. It's made with fresh mint, chives, lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper. I think we will use this part of the recipe  next time we have leg of lamb for dinner. I usually use mint jelly, but this is healthier and lower in calories. Our steak arrived leaking which was really disappointing and messy. I think the ice packs are too large and too heavy sitting on top of the meat and they squeezed the package open. Also, our UPS man places our box on it's side causing the leaking steak to leak up to the top of the box and leak on the produce. They need to change to a square box since the UPS man insists on placing rectangular boxes on their side. My Blue Apron, Home Chef and Plated square boxes always arrive right side up. The asparagus was very narrow and they didn't look like the recipe's photo that had nice thick asparagus. I think the zucchini should have been cut into larger pieces since it tends to overcook when cut so small. They only gave us one steak for two people, but due to the side vegetables it was very filling. I gave this three out of five stars and Hubby gave it two. He was quite annoyed there was only one steak for two people and the cooking time was off by fifteen minutes.  I would have given it four stars if the steak hadn't arrived leaking. This gluten free recipe had 489 calories.

I was going to cancel my subscription again due to the leaking steak and the mess I had to clean up, but I just received an email from them indicating that they are giving me the next box free as compensation. I have heard other customers have had meat or chicken leaking all over their box too. I wish they would come up with a solution rather than giving store credits. We are expecting the following recipes and ingredients on Friday:
  1. Jamie Oliver's Tasty Grilled Chicken with Warm Bean Salad
  2. Juicy Lucy Burger with Tomato Onion Jam & Baby Gem Lettuce Salad
  3. Dijon Pork Chops with Crispy Potato Cakes & Asparagus

Target Beauty Box - March 2016

Vacay Vibes

This is a review of a Target Beauty Box that was available for sale at Target.com on February 29th. It was available for only a couple of hours before it sold out. These boxes are very popular and so far they have all sold out very quickly. Lately they have been offering them monthly, but previously they were only available quarterly. Unfortunately, Target doesn't give anyone notice of when they will be going up for sale, so one has to stalk their website searching "beauty box" around the end of the month to the beginning of each month. It will show up as "sold out" until it goes up for sale in the early morning. They vary in price from $5-$10 and shipping is free. The value of these boxes also varies, Target said this $5 box has a retail value of $17. I came up with a value of $16.27. While this one has one of the lowest retail values, most of the products are ones I wanted to try, so it makes it worth it for me. Check out the two previous boxes I have reviewed here. Their value was in the $30-40 range! They also come with a coupon for $3 off a beauty purchase of $15 at Target.com or in stores. It expires about a month after you receive it, so be sure not to forget to use it before it expires. Included in March box were the following products:
  1. Not Your Mother's - Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray, 2 fl. oz., $1.49 retail value
  2. Banana Boat - Sun Comfort SPF 30 Lotion, 1 fl. oz., $1.24 value
  3. You Are Amazing - Juicy Grapefruit Body Lotion, 1 fl. oz., $.49 value
  4. Caress - Adore Forever Body Wash, 1.8 fl. oz., $.53 value
  5. Sinful Colors - Professional Nail Color, .5 fl. oz., $2.02 value
  6. Laneige -Water Sleeping Mask, .6 fl. oz., $6.85 value
  7. Hair Food - Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner, foil sample pack, .33 fl. oz. each. $.36 value
  8. Nügg - Anti-aging Face Mask, .33 fl. oz., $3.29 value
I look forward to using the sea salt spray on a weekend when the weather is very warm. I find these work best if you use it on damp hair and you apply quite a bit of it. When I'm done, the bottle's level will go down about an inch. It really requires that much of the product and you need to scrunch your hair a lot to get those beach waves to appear when it dries. I scrunch from the ends up. Those who I have talked to that weren't able to get waves used too little of the product, so keep that in mind. I find I can refresh it the next morning, by dampening my hair with a water spray bottle and then using the product again, but not as much as the first time. Also, if your waves get a bit droopy after several hours you can refresh it by dampening and scrunching again. In addition, if after it dries you notice areas that aren't wavy enough, just dampen and scrunch that area again. You can use an extra wide comb to comb through it, but it's best not to comb or brush it since the waves are delicate. I gave the sunscreen to Hubby who the day before got a bit of a sunburn working outside. I have to beg him to use SPF, he usually doesn't listen. The body lotion has a slight grapefruit smell that is very fresh. I've sampled the Caress Body Wash before in the rose scent and while I found it moisturizing and highly scented, I wasn't crazy about the dark color and the ingredients. Some people have had a bad reaction to this line of body washes, so beware. I prefer paraben and sulfate free washes. I have used the Sinful Colors brand of nail polish before and it's really inexpensive yet a good quality polish. Check out my last Sinful Colors manicure here. It's been quite popular on Pinterest with 333 pins so far. I'm guessing it's due to it's patriotic theme. I highly recommend this brand especially if you are on a tight budget. At only $2 per bottle it's quite the bargain! It would also be good for nail art, if you need several colors for your design. Sleeping masks are a new type of product that I haven't tried yet. I keep forgetting to give this one a try. It's suppose to give you an intense dose of moisture overnight which is especially needed in the winter. They can be quite pricey, so it's nice to get an inexpensive sample. I'm not a fan of foil pack samples because they are hard to open and difficult to use more than once without it spilling out. I usually give those away. I really wanted to try one of the Nügg face masks, but they are quite pricey, so that was the main reason I purchased this box. My favorite products in this box are the sea salt spray and the two face masks.

Did you manage to snag any of the Target Beauty Boxes? What's your opinion of their beauty boxes? Haven't snagged one yet? Time to stalk Target's website early tomorrow morning, if you want one of these boxes for yourself. They also make wonderful gifts! I think that is one reason they sell out so fast, because most people purchase more than one for themselves or multiple gifts. In the past they have been available for sale as early as 5 am to as late as 10 am. So far, if I visited the Target website around 9 am, I managed to get one before they sold out. I hear that you can even use the coupon from the previous box, if you purchase multiples that add up to at least $15. Such a bargain!

Update - they have now listed what will be in the April box, so it should be up any day now, take a look here.

Little Tokyo Restaurant Review - High Point, NC

4045 Premier Drive
High Point, NC  27265
(336) 885-1045

Dining Room

Free Appetizers

Miso Soup

Condiments

Bento Box C - $21.95

Steak & Shrimp Special Bento Box - $18.95

Free Dessert

This is a review for a Japanese restaurant called Little Tokyo located in High Point, North Carolina. We've been on the hunt for a great Japanese restaurant since we moved to the Piedmont a little over a year ago and we have finally found it. What an awesome dining experience we had a Little Tokyo last Saturday. We arrived around 4:15 pm and we were promptly seated at a table near the windows by a friendly waitress. Their sanitation score is 94%.

We ordered quite quickly since we already knew we were going to order Bento Boxes since they are so hard to find in this area.  I ordered Bento Box C which is described as "sashimi (tuna and salmon), Tokyo Spicy Tuna Roll, tempura (shrimp & vegetables), seaweed salad, salad with ginger dressing and miso soup". Hubby ordered the Steak & Shrimp Special Bento Box which is described as "hibachi steak & shrimp, fried rice, vegetables, shrimp & vegetable tempura, California roll, pork dumpling, miso soup and salad with ginger dressing". Hubby requested white rice rather than fried rice. Five minutes later the free appetizers and miso soup arrived. We were offered the option of chicken soup. The four appetizers were crispy noodles with sweet & sour sauce on top, fried chicken with a unknown sauce, edamame and corn crab salad. Hubby liked the corn crab salad and crispy noodles the most and I liked the fried chicken and crispy noodles the most. We both received our own little sample of the corn crab salad and we shared the rest of the samples. This is especially delightful since it's usually a long wait for the sushi to be made and this has always been our complaint at our old favorite restaurant, Sushi Thai, where we use to live. If you are really hungry when you arrive every minute waiting for the sushi to be made feels like forever, so this solves that problem! Ten minutes later our waitress brought out three sauces: white sauce, chili pepper sauce and ginger sauce. Four minutes later our entrees were brought to the table, which is a total of fourteen minutes after the appetizers were brought out. We absolutely loved our Bento Boxes! I'm picky about tempera and the two tempera shrimp and two vegetables were cooked perfectly. The tempera wasn't greasy and the sauce was of a good quality and flavor. The sashimi was scrumptious and I saved one piece of the salmon as my last bite, so I would say that's my favorite. Second favorite is the tempura. Hubby's steak and shrimp came in third which I sampled. The steak and shrimp were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The ginger dressing is of a high quality and equal to my favorite at our old favorite restaurant. The lettuce was very fresh and crisp. I wasn't a big fan of the Tokyo Spicy Tuna Roll since it had a hint of sweetness and I prefer spicy over sweet when it comes to sushi. It's described as "California roll topped with tuna, spicy sauce and crunch". The description doesn't mention any sweetness to it though. I didn't eat the seaweed salad because I don't care for it. We really enjoyed our meals and all that was left was some seaweed salad, edamame and rice.

We plan to return soon even though it's a bit longer of a drive than we care for and we prefer lunch on Saturdays. They don't open until 4 pm on Saturdays and they are closed on Sundays, so that's disappointing. They open at 11:30 am on weekdays, close between 2:30 and 4:30 pm and reopen at 4:30 pm. If you haven't tried this restaurant yet, I highly recommend you give it a try very soon! It's located near the Regal Cinemas Palladium. You may want to make a reservation if you aren't arriving close to opening time since the dining area is quite small.

I need restaurant suggestions since we have only lived in Triad about a year. So please comment below! I have several more restaurant reviews in the works, so be sure to stop by again soon. Check out my Restaurant Reviews Pinterest Board which also has restaurants in the Raleigh, Triangle area and Charlotte.

Hello Fresh 10th Delivery & $40 Off

Salmon en Papillote with Whole Wheat Couscous Pilaf, Asparagus & Tarragon Chive Herb Sauce

Ingredients (click on photos to enlarge)

Lasagna Baked Spinach Penne with Kale & Mozzarella

Ingredients

Lemony Pan Seared Chicken with Pesto Potato Salad & Peas

Ingredients

This is a review of weekly subscription box called Hello Fresh for $69 a week including shipping. This week I gave all three recipes four out of five stars. We really enjoyed the meals. I really like how their meat and chicken have expirations dates on them unlike some of their competition. I also like that they offer a Jamie Oliver recipe each week.

Salmon en Papillote with Whole Wheat Couscous Pilaf, Asparagus & Tarragon Chive Herb Sauce

Hubby and I gave this recipe four out of five stars. I was grateful that it only took thirty minutes to prepare. It was easy to make and scrumptious. There is no excuse for eating salmon without a delicious topping since there are so many that are easy, healthy and tasty. It had 621 calories, 46 grams of protein and 7 grams of fiber. We had some couscous leftovers, so it actually landed up being less calories. The photo above doesn't show all of the couscous because it wouldn't fit on the plate. It was a very enjoyable and healthy dinner which we would love to eat again soon.

Lasagna Baked Spinach Penne with Kale & Mozzarella

Another wonderful recipe that only took thirty minutes to make, fifteen of that was baking time, so it's only fifteen minutes prep time! What a delicious and healthy meal it was! It comes in at 868 calories, but really it was enough for three portions instead of two, so that lowers the calorie count. I would have liked more mozzarella, but that would increase the calories. We both gave it four out of five stars. I love spinach pasta, so I was happy to see they changed it to spinach pasta for St. Patrick's Day.

Lemony Pan Seared Chicken with Pesto Potato Salad & Peas

I gave this recipe four out of five stars, Hubby wasn't as fond of it. Put pesto sauce on any dish and I'm likely to love it. I don't think I've ever had it on potatoes before though. It was delicious and filling and yet it only had 531 calories. The photo above doesn't show all of the pesto sauce, I added more to mine after I took the photo. The lemon juice squeezed on top was really tasty. The only change I would make is to grind the pine nuts in with the pesto rather than place them whole on top.

This was a very enjoyable week of recipes, I really enjoyed all of the green vegetables they added for St. Patrick's Day. We look forward to the next week of recipes which will be:
  1. Pan Roasted Chicken with Dijon Mustard Sauce & Brown Rice
  2. Seared Steak with Spring Veggie Succotash & Mint Chive Pesto
  3. Nir's Lamb Stuffed Zucchini

Birchbox Review - March 2016

Women's Day & Women's History Month Box

This is a monthly subscription box called Birchbox that costs only $10 and shipping is free. The retail value of my March box is $50.68. Included in my March box were the following products:
  1. Smashbox Cosmetics -  Photo Op Eye Shadow in Filter with Vanilla, Sable & Sumatra, .04 oz., retail value $12.44
  2. Shiseido - Ultimate Power Infusing Concentrate, .3 fl. oz., value $2.23
  3. Living Proof - PhD Fresh Cut Split End Mender, 1 fl. oz., value $7.05
  4. Shiseido - Ulitmate Eye Power Infusing Eye Concentrate, .18 oz., value $21.67
  5. Kiehl's - Ultra Facial Cleanser, 1 fl. oz., value $3.90
  6. Amika - Perk Up Dry Shampoo, .75 net wt. oz., value $3.39
Last month's box wasn't great, so much so that I was even planning to unsubscribe, but this one is fabulous. It has the brands I love and I think $50.68 is the highest value my Birchbox has been worth so far. I forgot to chose what I wanted, so I was even more excited to see such a great box. I was excited for the Smashbox eyeshadows, but unfortunately they are in warm tones and I need cool for my skin tone. I'll have to place that on my blog sale when I get around to doing that again. I love Shiseido products so I'm always happy to receive them. I'm always in need of a good eye cream, this one is a semi-thick gel type. It goes on a bit heavy, so be sure to use just a little. Since I've grown my hair especially long lately, I'm in great need of a split end mender. Be careful not to squeeze the tube too hard because it comes out quickly and it's very thin. It has a silky feeling on my hands, not sure if it's helping my ends, but it does smooth them down a bit. I've always enjoyed Kiehl's product line and I'm always in the need of a great cleanser, so I'm very happy to find this product in my box. It cleanses really well and leaves the skin a bit moisturized and smooth. It's has just a bit of lather. Not a fan of dry shampoo since I have to take a shower most days due to exercising, so I don't usually need such a treatment.

Check out what I received in some of my previous boxes:

Pilot Mountain State Park - Pinnacle, NC

1792 Pilot Knob Park Road
Pinnacle, NC  27043
(336) 325-2355

Viewing Area with Parking - Route 52 Heading North

View from the Top Facing South - Early Spring (March)

View from the Top Facing South - Summer (August)

View from the Top Facing South - Fall (October)

Seating Area Next to Parking Lot - No Hiking Required & Dogs Welcome (March)

Notice Downtown Winston Salem in the Distance (click on photos to enlarge)

View from the Top Facing North (March)

Northeast View - Small Hike to This Point (March)

View of Pilot Mountain from Route 52 Driving North - Winter (February)

Pilot Mountain is a North Carolina State Park located approximately twenty-four minutes north of Winston Salem and seventeen minutes south of Mt. Airy. If you are ever in the area or driving through on Route 52, please take a moment to enjoy the beauty of Pilot Mountain. There is nothing more peaceful, calming and soothing as nature! Just one look at the breathtaking view and you will be able to put your troubles to rest for a moment. It's so easy to get to, since it's entrance is located only half a mile from the highway! There is no entrance fee, so visit for ten minutes or for hours. The drive up the mountain takes about six to seven minutes. The upper parking lot is located right next to the southern viewing area (see photos above), so no hiking is required! A short walk stepping up some rocks will take you to the east, north and northeast viewing areas as shown above. The park is open year round from 8 am to sunset, the only day it's closed is Christmas Day. There is also a parking area at the bottom of the mountain and a campground. There are many hiking trails from easy to strenuous and they range from .3 of a mile to 8 miles. Paddling, picnicking, rock climbing and horseback riding are also allowed. It's highest elevation is 2,421 feet and the southern view parking lot at the top is just a little over 2,000 ft.

The southern view on a fairly clear day provides a view of downtown Winston Salem and if it's a really clear day you can even see Greensboro a little east of Winston way off in the distance, look to the left of Winston. The northern view provides a view of North Carolina and Virginia mountains. Since the temperatures in this area are usually only chilly in the months of January and February, you have ten other months to visit if you don't like cold weather. The hot months are from June to mid September, so avoid those months if you can't stand the heat. Note that it is a bit cooler up there and there's a breeze. There is a restroom and water fountains next to the parking lot. Also, there are doggie bags over there if needed. Dogs must be on a leash at all times. At the entrance there is a park office on the right that provides park information. Right after that is the campground, also on the right. If you have passed the campground and the pedestrian warning sign, you are on your way to the top and there is no turnaround, so prepare yourself for the six minute drive up. There is one pull over area on the way down, if you are being tailgated which can happen during busy hours. If you come across some locals you may find them chatting you up, since North Carolinians tend to be very friendly. Hey, you may even meet me since I live nearby and I'm a frequent visitor. You'll see a lot of Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia tags since they are the ones that tend to use route 52 the most.

The first photo above shows the viewing area of Pilot Mountain which is on the side of Route 52. It's four miles south of the mountain and access is only available when heading north on Route 52. It has a sign with information about the mountain and parking so that you can take photos and enjoy the view. The second, third and forth photos are taken from the same spot during different seasons. Note the cute little Charlie Brown looking pine tree in each photo to give you perspective and notice how the colors change with each season. This is the view only a few steps from your car, so there is no hiking required to see this view! There is a little seating area there also. You can see that seating area in the fifth photo featuring my little Maltese dog, Leo. This park is dog friendly and my little Leo loves his adventures to Pilot Mountain! In the sixth photo you can see the Winston Salem skyline off in the distance. Note that it's even better in person. Be sure to click on the photos so that they enlarge and you can get a better view. The seventh photo features the northern view which does require a short hike. It's mostly stepping up rocks, but I highly recommend proper shoes and perhaps a hiking pole for those who need a bit of assistance. Short Leo managed just fine, so the steps aren't that high. I wouldn't recommend this hike for small children or dogs who aren't obedient. You're basically standing on a narrow rock with only a three rail fence, shown in the eighth photo. The seating area shown in the fifth photo shows the safer fence for small children and dogs. The ninth photo was taken in the car traveling north and it gives you an idea of how large the mountain is in relation to the road.

I also recommend visiting Hanging Rock State Park which is twenty-two miles east of Pilot Mountain. They have several waterfalls that are lovely and the drive there is so beautiful. Stay tuned for my blog post on that soon. In addition, don't forget to visit historic Old Salem which is a twenty-five minute drive south and you must eat at The Tavern for a visit back in time. King features several restaurants about nine minutes south. I recommend Thai Cafe, Little Italy and Dairi-O. All of which offer carry out and dining in. Dairi-O has a drive thru, but it's a little further away from the highway. It's worth the trip because it's the highest quality fast food you will find in the area. You could also take your meal to Pilot Mountain for a picnic! If you are an Andy Griffith fan, be sure to visit Mt. Airy which is eighteen minutes north. If you are a wine connoisseur, you must visit the many wineries in the area that use to be tobacco farms. The closest being Jolo, which I have reviewed on this blog and it has a view of the mountain. It's only an eight minute drive west. Hotels can be found in Mt. Airy and Winston Salem. If you have any questions, feel free to ask below. I'm a new resident, but I'm quickly learning about the Piedmont. What's your favorite place to visit in North Carolina, any recommendations?
