Fourth Street Filling Station Restaurant Review - Winston Salem, NC

871 West 4th Street
Winston Salem, NC 27101
(336) 724-7600

Shrimp & Grits - $12.00

Chicken Salad Melt - $8.00

This is a review of a restaurant located in downtown Winston Salem, North Carolina called Forth Street Filling Station. We visited around noon on a Tuesday.  Parallel parking is available on 4th Street and the parking meter requires a quarter for each hour and it has a two hour limit. They have a tiny parking lot but it's only about eight spaces and it's difficult to turn around after not finding a parking space. They have lots of outdoor seating which was completely full when we arrived and some indoor seating which was mostly empty. Their sanitation grade was 95 which is very good. We were seated right away.

We waited quite some time for the waitress to take our order and she wasn't smiling or friendly. Our drinks came out promptly, but my Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi, not sure which, tasted off. We then waited forty-five minutes for our entrees to arrive! Normally I wouldn't wait that long for food, but I was in such disbelief since the restaurant was not full of customers and it was lunchtime after all. The waitress never came to refill our drinks nor check on us. We had an awful time trying to flag her down. We asked how much longer it would be because we were ready to leave. She said just another minute which turned out to be eight! When the food arrived my french fries were just warm which meant my food was sitting there waiting for the waitress to pick it up. After waiting forty-five minutes, I expect hot food to be hot and cold food to be cold. I've never had a chicken salad sandwich that I didn't love until this meal. It was sour! It tasted like the mayo was bad for sure and I didn't eat another bite. I was so disappointed! I love chicken salad especially on a croissant! The cheese was suppose to be melted, but it was not yet the chicken salad wasn't cold. So all I had to eat were the fries which were good.

Hubby ordered the Shrimp & Grits and really enjoyed it a lot. He said it was hot, but I was wondering how that was possible since the cheese on top wasn't melting! Later in the day he had a horrible stomach ache and we thought maybe the cream sauce was bad. We finally got the waitresses attention, but she just stood by the register waiting her turn since someone else was using it. They really need another register and management needs to tell the wait staff to tend to their customers rather than waiting in line to use the register! Finally she came over and Hubby told her that my sandwich was sour. She turned it back on him and told him "you should have let me know". Seriously?! She was never available and she should have checked on us at least once to see if we were enjoying our meal. If she had taken a moment to glance at our table, she would have seen that I wasn't eating my sandwich. She was going to argue with us and she was making us even angrier, so Hubby said to just bring the check. Instead, someone showed up asking how I was without introducing herself. I was quite stunned and was wondering who she was since she wasn't wearing a name tag or uniform. She told us she had heard I didn't like my sandwich and we wouldn't have to pay for it. She also said we wouldn't have to pay for anything we ordered. That was appreciated, but something should have been done when we were waiting forty-five minutes. Her excuse for that was that they had a large party before us. According to the reviews I read, it's quite common for them to have large groups. I'm guessing this is due to the many offices that are located nearby. She should have brought out a appetizer or soup for free while we were starving waiting for the food to show up! Don't wait till the customer is so fed up they will never return. They did offer me something to go, but they were crazy to think I would yet again wait for them to cook me some food! I also found it awful how the other waitress, who was tending to her customers quite often, never smiled at me when she walked past our table. It appeared to me that the staff doesn't enjoy working there.

I'd also like to note that the windows and the mirror on the wall were filthy. That alone is reason for me not to return to a restaurant. It shows a lack of caring and cleanliness. The ceiling was painted white, but there was black dirt all over it. Hubby says it's probably from their gas heat. The blue walls were also in serious need of repainting. The tables are very worn out with scratches and discoloration. They should close down the restaurant for a day to take care of these issues. Needless to say we will not be returning.

Home Chef - 15th Delivery

Salmon Crusted with Everything Bagel Seasoning with Chive Sour Cream, Arugula Salad & Lemon Caper Vinaigrette

Ingredients (click on photos to enlarge)

Asian Sesame Chicken Salad with Mandarin Oranges & Almonds

Ingredients

Strawberry Chia Chocolate Cheerleader with Orange & Agave Nectar

Ingredients

Fruit Basket

This is a review of a subscription box called Home Chef. This is the 15th box we have purchased from them. Meals are $9.95 a serving, smoothies are $4.95 a serving and the fruit basket costs $9.90. Each week they have eleven dinner recipes to chose from featuring steak, chicken, ground beef, pork and seafood and three are vegetarian. They also have one breakfast recipe, one smoothie and one fruit basket to chose from. This week we enjoyed the Salmon recipe the most. It was incredibly delicious. I only chose two dinner recipes this week since Hubby was out of town for most of the week.

Salmon Crusted with Everything Bagel Seasoning with Chive Sour Cream, Arugula Salad & Lemon Caper Vinaigrette

I chose this recipe because it looked very unusual and delicious. We both gave it five out of five stars! It felt like a meal from a very fancy restaurant that would cost a fortune. The salmon was perfectly moist. The vinaigrette was surprising yummy and was made with capers, shallot, lemon juice, olive oil, salt & pepper. Very simple yet so good. The chive sour cream wasn't even necessary there was so much flavor from the bagel seasoning which consisted of garlic, onion, poppy and sesame seeds. The recipe indicated it would take thirty minutes to prepare, but it took a bit longer. This recipe had only 426 calories yet it didn't taste like diet food at all. If they feature this recipe again, I will definitely order it again! Now that the cooler weather is here, I'm ordering seafood recipes again.

Asian Sesame Chicken Salad with Mandarin Oranges & Almonds

This recipe tasted like diet food yet it had 616 calories. It tasted similar to Wendy's fast food mandarin salad but with a larger portion of chicken and spinach instead of lettuce. I wasn't crazy about the dressing. We gave it three out of five stars. While it was tasty, it's not a recipe I plan to repeat. It took about thirty-five minutes to prepare and it was a large portion so I had leftovers for lunch.

Strawberry Chia Chocolate Cheerleader with Orange & Agave Nectar

This recipe was the first smoothie we didn't enjoy much. Perhaps it was because I left out the Agave Nectar since I'm allergic to it. The orange wasn't very ripe and I didn't have enough strawberries. Also, the chia seeds were missing from my box. I will email them to let them know. They always give me a store credit when there are issues like these which isn't often. It only took about five minutes to prepare and it had 211 calories.

The fruit basket was enjoyable as usual. Everything was ready to eat except the nectarines which just needed a couple of days to ripen. So there you have it, my review of our 15th delivery. I received a Hello Fresh box today, so that's what I'll be reviewing next. But the following next two weeks Home Chef has so many tempting recipes that I'm having a hard time deciding on which ones to purchase! If you haven't given Home Chef a try yet, I highly recommend you snag my coupon below by clicking on the link for $30 off your first box! Plated Subscription Box Review - 13th Delivery

Soy Glazed Trout en Papillote with Sesame Green Beans & Snow Peas

Ingredients

Basil Radiator Pasta with Vine Ripe Tomato Sauce & Fresh Mozzarella

Ingredients

Beef & Eggplant Moussaka

Ingredients

This is a review of a weekly subscription box called Plated for $72. This week all three recipes we rated with four out of five stars. They were all so delicious!

Soy Glazed Trout en Papillote with Sesame Green Beans & Snow Peas

Anytime I see a recipe that includes trout, I immediately purchase it since I love trout. The trout was cooked in a sauce that was so incredibly delicious. The sauce was made with soy sauce, honey, doubanjiang chili paste and rice wine vinegar. The trout was baked inside parchment paper which made it so moist. I'm not a big fan of green beans and snow peas, so I would have preferred different vegetables. If it had been something else I would have given it five out five stars instead of four. The shichimi togarashi spice, scallions and sesame oil were a nice addition to the vegetables. This recipe took about 35 minutes and it had only 430 calories. Sometimes low calorie dishes leave me unfulfilled and still a bit hungry, but this one was filling.

Basil Radiator Pasta with Vine Ripe Tomato Sauce & Fresh Mozzarella

Every time I see Plated offer pasta from Sfoglini I purchase that recipe, since I absolutely love their high quality, unique pasta from New York City. This time they supplied us with radiator pasta that was made with basil. The ridges of the pasta held the sauce very well. The texture of the pasta was absolute perfection! Hubby added additional red pepper since he likes his food extra spicy. The addition of bread crumbs was surprisingly tasty. Hubby waited until the mozzarella was melted and stirred it in so it was well mixed. The recipe didn't wait until the mozzarella melted which isn't traditional Italian cooking. I had just watched the Giada in Italy show on the Food Network hours earlier where she made a traditional Italian dish and she said to make sure you waited until the mozzarella melted and to stir it in. So I found that part of the recipe to be strange. This recipe said it would take about 40 minutes, but in fact it took much longer. It would have tasted better if the sauce had be simmered for and hour or more. While I appreciate them trying to keep the cooking time down, I think they should have optional instructions for those of us who would like to cook it traditionally and take the extra time for even more flavor. It had 700 delicious calories. Who cares about calories when it tastes this good! We gave this recipe four out of five stars due to the mozzarella issue and the cooking time being way off. The portion was huge and I had enough leftovers for one lunch.

Beef & Eggplant Moussaka

While this dish isn't very pretty on the plate, it received four out of five stars from me and five out of five from Hubby. It tasted like a secret recipe your Greek Grandmother would make, if you had one. The addition of cinnamon & nutmeg to the beef made for a unique flavor. I couldn't figure out what the spice was when I tasted it, so when I looked at the recipe I was quite surprised. The mixture of yogurt, percorino cheese and egg made for a delicious cheesy topping. This portion was huge and I had enough leftovers for one lunch.

What an enjoyable week of recipes this was! If you check out my blog post that compares Plated, Home Chef, Hello Fresh & Blue Apron you will see that Plated comes out on top for the highest percentage of four and five star recipes. If you haven't given Plated a try yet, you owe it to yourself to do so soon. I highly recommend their service. Unfortunately, I have given away all nine of my free Plated boxes, so I won't have another Plated giveaway unless they give me some more to share in the future.

Atelier on Trade Bakery & Café Review - Winston Salem, NC

533 North Trade Street
Winston Salem, NC
(336) 703-1503

Exterior View (door located on right side of French flag & open sign)

Pineapple with Coconut - $3.75 each

Cherry, Pistachio & White Chocolate Croissants - $3.75 each

Strawberry with Ricotta Croissants - $3.75 each

Chocolate Croissants - $3.75 each

Plain Croissants - $3.25 each (click on photos to enlarge)

This is a review of a bakery & cafe located in downtown Winston Salem, North Carolina called Atelier on Trade. I'm always on the lookout for a high quality bakery and when I heard the baker was trained in France, I had to give it a try as soon as possible! Hubby & I visited around 1 pm on a Tuesday and we were the only customers.

When we arrived 90% of the pastries for sale were croissants. The refrigerated case was empty. I was hoping to see more inventory and not mostly croissants. According to their Facebook page they also have eclairs, cheesecake, macarons, pies, quiche, muffins, napoleons, cupcakes, cake, cookies and tarts. Since my husband loves eclairs I was hoping to purchase one of those for him. So we both chose the Cherry, Pistachio & White Chocolate Croissant and the Chocolate Croissant. Just a warning, if you haven't had traditional croissants made the French way you might not be aware that they have less sugar and filling than the American version. Personally I prefer them the French way, I find American bakers put way too much sugar in their baked goods. It's not only unnecessary and more calories, but makes for an overwhelming flavor of sugar making it hard to enjoy the flavor of the other ingredients. The French version is also more flaky and buttery. We really enjoyed the Cherry, Pistachio & White Chocolate croissants. There were little pieces of what seemed to be fresh not frozen cherries inside and it had white chocolate drizzled on top. I didn't taste the pistachio. The chocolate croissants were also very enjoyable and featured little bits of dark chocolate inside. We saved them for breakfast the next day. I find chocolate croissants are best served warm. So I highly recommend taking some home and warming them up ever so slightly in your oven or toaster oven. Just warm them enough to slightly melt the chocolate. I also ordered a Chai Latte only to be told they were out of them. I found that a bit shocking. They have some bottled soft drinks, water & fruit juices in a mini refrigerator you can purchase, but I saw no sign of any diet sodas. There are a few tables inside that you can sit at and the croissants are served on pretty, mismatched china.

We will visit again on a weekend in hopes that they have more inventory then. I recommend you give this bakery a try. Parallel parking is available along Trade Street and the parking meter requires one quarter per hour on weekdays.

Le Kebab Grill Restaurant Review - Charlotte, NC

111 Ken Hoffman Drive
Charlotte, NC  28262
(704) 547-7217

Exterior View

Baba Ghanouj & Pita Bread - $5.99

Lamb Shawarma - $5.99

Baklava - $1.99

This is a review of a restaurant located in Charlotte, North Carolina called Le Kebab Grill. There is parallel parking in the front and in the rear there is a parking deck with lots of parking spots. Their sanitation score when we visited was 92, which is good. We visited on a Wednesday around 2 pm. They had more customers than most restaurants have for that time of day, but there were plenty of seats. There is indoor and outdoor seating. We were greeted immediately and taken to our table. All of the staff was extremely friendly and welcoming.

Our waitress came over right away to assist us with our order. She was so kind, friendly, attentive and super welcoming during our stay. We started with an appetizer of Baba Ghanouj & Pita Bread and we loved the addition of the smoked paprika. It was brought to the table very promptly. It was very good, it had a good consistency and enough spices to make it very enjoyable. The pita bread was served warm and although at first glance it looked like more than we needed, it was in fact the perfect portion. Eleven minutes later our pita wraps were brought out. While we had originally ordered the Lamb Gyros, the waitress explained that the Lamb Shawarma had the sliced lamb. Since that was what we wanted, but didn't realize the gyro didn't have sliced lamb, we went with the Lamb Shawarma instead. I prefer tzatziki sauce instead of the tahani sauce. So next time I think I will ask for a side of tzatziki sauce. I would have also like more onion and tomatoes. The lamb was delicious and perfectly spiced. It was a nice sized portion. We decided to have some Baklava for dessert since they are so small they wouldn't make us feel like we over ate. Our waitress promptly brought them out right after we ordered them. They were very good and a nice ending to our meal.

Our experience at Le Kebab Grill was an excellent one. We really loved the taste and quality of the food, the great prices, nice decor and the excellent service. All of the customers seemed very happy with their meals. It was a wonderful lunch and we plan to return next time we are in the area. If we didn't live so far away, this would be a restaurant we would visit weekly. I highly recommend you give this restaurant a try if you live in the area. It is only a few miles away from IKEA! So if you are visiting Charlotte from out of town with plans to shop at IKEA as we were, then be sure to make time to stop by for a delicious lunch or dinner.
