This is a review of a weekly subscription box called Home ChefEach week they offer twelve recipes and a fruit basket to chose from. One is a smoothie, one is breakfast and usually three of them are vegetarian. Some are low calorie, low carb and some are gluten free. Each dinner entree is $9.95, smoothies are $4.95 and the fruit is $4.95. Occasionally, there is an special recipe that is higher in price due to the ingredients. They added dessert for Christmas and for New Years they have added appetizers! This week out of the four recipes we gave three of them four out of five stars and one two.

Pan Seared Pork Chop with Honey Fennel Butter & Au Gratin Turnips and Swiss Chard

This meal reminds me of something you could order at a southern gourmet restaurant. We would have given it five out of five stars instead of four, if the swiss chard had a bit more garlic or something to liven it up. The rest of the meal was perfection. The Honey Fennel Butter is absolutely awesome! Simply mix together 2 tbsp. butter, 1 tsp. honey, 2 fresh oregano sprigs, 1/4 tsp. ground fennel and a pinch of salt and pepper. It is so delicious on top of the pork chop! It takes a boring pork chop and turns it into such a gourmet, flavorful, scrumptious pork chop. The Au Gratin Turnips were easy to make and so delicious. Turnips are one of my favorite vegetables, so I'm always anxious to try new recipes that include them. This recipe took about forty minutes to prepare and the turnips needed about seven more minutes cooking time. Make sure your turnips are tender, otherwise they won't taste as good. This is a low calorie recipe with 624 calories. It was a generous portion.

Skinny Chicken Mozzarella with Basil Marinara Sauce & Garlicky Greens

I now prefer this over Chicken Parmigiana. Wow, who needs that's awful fried coating when you can have this healthy, low calorie version that tastes so much better! This is seriously crave worthy. Simply combine 1 tbsp butter, 1 oz grated parmesan cheese and salt and pepper and coat both sides of the chicken breasts. After baking, they are moved into a pan and coated with 1/2 cup marinara sauce, 1/4 cup water and 2 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese. I wish I knew which brand of sauce they sent us because it tastes like something your Italian grandmother spent all day making. It was the best I've ever had. We gave this recipe four out five stars, but would have given it five if the kale and spinach part of the recipe had some more garlic or some spices. I can't wait to eat this again! It took a bit longer than the thirty-five minutes the recipe indicated it would take. This is a low calorie recipe with 564 calories. It was a generous portion.

Strawberry Shortcake French Toast with Bacon, Strawberry, Honey & Roasted Peanut Topping

This french toast recipe is unusual since it's made using english muffins. I thought it seemed like a good idea, but we didn't really care for it and gave it only two out of five stars. Everything else was good though and the topping is definitely worth repeating. It's a healthier version using 5.3 oz of greek yogurt and mixing in a 1/2 oz of honey. This is a great healthy alternative to whipped cream. The strawberry topping is made by mixing 2 oz of frozen whole strawberries and 3 oz of strawberry preserves which is healthier than strawberry syrup and just as delicious. This recipe took about thirty-five minutes and it had 709 calories. We will definitely use the toppings part of the recipe again soon.

Chicken Grand-Mere with Arugula Salad

We gave this easy recipe four out of five stars and it would make for the perfect weekend meal. It took a lot longer than the thirty minutes it stated, but it was worth the time since it was so delicious, healthy and low in calories. It came in at 620 calories and there were a lot of vegetable leftovers, so that would reduce the amount of calories since we weren't able to eat it all. Anytime a recipe includes rutabaga I have to try it! I absolutely love that vegetable and if you haven't tried it before, you must! If it's cooked properly, it's absolutely delicious.  It has too be cooked until it's very tender. This recipe added mushroom, shallots, butter, carrots and chicken base to the rutabaga. I was surprised the mushrooms were a lovely compliment to the rutabaga. I usually just mash the rutabaga and add butter. It was very tasty and definitely worth repeating soon. The arugula salad was especially good and I recommend the dressing. The dressing is very simple, just combine 1/2 tsp red wine vinegar, 1 tsp. olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper. It sounds like it's too simple to be yummy, but it is. It also doesn't seem like enough quantity, but if you toss the salad really well, it's the perfect amount. The chicken breasts were delicious and were only seasoned with olive oil, thyme leaves, salt and pepper. Yet another lovely recipe from Home Chef!

What a wonderful week of recipes, so tasty and healthy! We are expecting our 28th box to arrive today and it will include the following:
  1. Classic Christmas Ham
  2. Christmas Style Beef Burrito
  3. Salmon Cakes
  4. Chicken Marsala
  5. Mango Tango Smoothies
