This is a review of the 23rd box of food and recipes we have received from Home Chef. Each week they offer twelve recipes and a fruit basket to chose from. One is a smoothie, one is breakfast and usually three of them are vegetarian. Some are low calorie, low carb and some are gluten free. Each dinner entree is $9.95, smoothies are $4.95 and the fruit is $4.95. Occasionally, there is an special recipe that is higher in price due to the ingredients. This week we gave two recipes five out of five stars, one four stars, and two three stars.

Snickerdoodle Smoothie with Cinnamon, Greek Yogurt & Dates

Oh me oh my, this was so scrumptious! I gave it five out five stars. I need to add the ingredients to my grocery list to make it again as soon as possible. It calls for 1 oz sweetened flaked coconut, 2 tsp. ground cinnamon, 2 tbsp. light brown sugar, 1 cup almond milk unsweetened, 3 oz pitted dates and 5.3 oz. plain Greek Yogurt. It's the perfect fall dessert smoothie with 336 calories. Such a fun and easy recipe. If you have never made a dessert or smoothie with dates, you owe to yourself to make one soon! Dates are especially delightful in desserts and so good for you.

Pan Fried Sole with White Wine Butter Sauce, Fresh Lemon & Roasted French Vegetable Medley

Hubby went absolutely crazy over this recipe and you may find yourself licking the plate because it is that good! He gave it five out of five stars while I gave it four stars because I wasn't crazy about the side vegetables. The sauce on the sole was so easy to make yet so delicious and fancy. It's made with shallots, lemon juice, white cooking wine, evaporated milk and butter. You'll feel like you're in a French restaurant eating this tasty, low calorie meal. It only takes about thirty-five minutes to prepare and it has 543 calories. There is no excuse for eating your fish without a fancy sauce, try this one since it's so easy and simple.

Butternut Mac 'N Cheese with Asiago, Cheddar & Roasted Brussels Spouts

I made this for lunch and gave it four out of five stars. To make five stars it would need more cheese, some garlic and maybe some mustard or some kind of spice. It was enough for three portions and it was very filling. I found it took about an hour to prepare though the recipe says forty-five minutes. I have never cooked vegetables with maple syrup before and I was really nervous about the mess it would make in our pan, but it landed up being quite easy to clean off. The brussels sprouts were like candy after cooking them in the syrup and the syrup turned crispy. I've never had panko breadcrumbs on my mac and cheese before and I was surprised I really enjoyed it. I think this is the fanciest mac and cheese I've ever had and certainly the healthiest. It states that it's 809 calories, but if you separate it into three portions as I did, then it's only 539 calories. I also didn't use all the pasta since I wanted it to be more cheesy, so that lowers the calories too.

Bread Bowl Veggie Chili with Sweet Potatoes, Cheddar, Zucchini & Chickpeas

I was torn on giving this one four or three stars and finally decided on three. The recipe was off on cooking times, the vegetable base was missing and it seemed to need a bit more seasoning. Also, I would have liked it more if there were less chickpeas and more zucchini. If you wanted a non vegetarian version, I suggest adding some chicken. This made three huge portions except for the bread bowls. We also ate the part I took out of the bread to make the bowl. It made four pieces of sourdough bread which were delicious with butter on them. This recipe called for forty-five minutes preparation time, but we found the chili needed to be cooked twice as long to soften the vegetables. The bread bowls also need twice as much time in the oven. It states that it has 691 calories, but if you split it into three portions instead of two, it would be only 460 calories. This low calorie recipe is wonderful comfort food for a chilly day.

Pork Shumai Meatballs with Ponzu Dipping Sauce, Snap Peas & Rice

We had high hopes for this recipe, but we landed up giving it only three stars. The meatballs were really good, but we weren't crazy about the side dish of snap peas with red pepper flakes. The rice was deliciously comforting. It had 622 calories and took about thirty-five minutes to prepare.
