November Seasonal Fruit Selection

This is a review of our 21st delivery from a weekly food subscription box called Home Chef. This week wasn't our favorite, reviews range from two to five out of five stars. Read more about it below:

Pumpkin Pie Smoothie with Honey & Vanilla

I was really excited to try this fall smoothie but we really didn't care for the flavor. At first taste it had the flavor of an uncooked pumpkin pie which was strange. As we drank more it wasn't as bad and then it tasted like pumpkin pie ice cream without sugar. It would have tasted better if they had added more apple, less pumpkin and some sugar or stevia. It may have tasted better as a warm drink. Included were one apple, one cup canned pumpkin, 8 oz milk, 2 oz honey, 1 tsp. vanilla and 1 1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice. We gave it two out of five stars. It took about seven minutes to prepare and it had 322 calories.

Blackened Chicken Salad with Cracked Pepper Buttermilk Dressing

This tasted much better than I thought it would. Hubby chose it out of the twelve dishes we had to chose from and now I'm glad he did because we both gave it five out five stars. It was simply scrumptious! At only 460 calories this recipe is a wonderful creation for sure. I don't normally like blue cheese, but I've now come to the conclusion that I don't like low quality blue cheese. The quality of this blue cheese was superior to any I've had before and it was so delicious. We would love to make this recipe again soon, but I need to find out what brand of cheese they gave us. The dressing on the salad was light yet so full of flavor. Normally buttermilk is heavy and can upset my stomach, but this was a lovely combination of buttermilk, sour cream, white wine vinegar, cracked black pepper and salt. The crispy carrots on top were the perfect substitution for high carb croutons or crispy noodles! I didn't miss the carbs at all! This recipe took about forty minutes and it was worth every minute due to the supreme flavor.

Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza with Italian Sausage & Two Cheeses

I was most excited about this recipe and since it involved making dough and baking, I prepared this one instead of Hubby since I'm the baker in the house. This is the first time I've made dough with yogurt and it made me quite nervous so I reread the recipe three times to make sure the dough actually had yogurt in it! It turned out perfectly and strangely it didn't taste different than regular pizza dough. I think they made the mistake of sending us tomato sauce rather than crushed tomatoes as the recipe states. They gave us a huge red onion and I wasn't sure how much of it to use. I think I should have used more since they cooked down quite a bit. If we made it again we would use spices in the sauce and sausage rather than just sprinkling it on top. We gave it three out of five stars since we really prefer our mozarella on top rather than on the bottom. The mozzarella just cooked into the dough and lacked the gooey consistency that we so love. I think they made a mistake on the temperature of the oven being 375 instead of the normal 425 for deep dish pizza. We had to cook it much longer due to this issue, so that was annoying since we were extremely hungry. It had 973 calories, but we couldn't eat it all since it was very filling.

Healthy Takeout Shrimp Singapore Noodles

I thought we would love this dish but I need to remember that I'm not really fond of noodles in my Asian dishes. I really need to stick to the recipes that have rice instead of noodles. We gave this recipe only two out of five stars because we didn't eat much of it due to the flavor though it did make the house smell like an Asian restaurant. I think the other ingredients would have been better suited with chicken rather than shrimp. We only used half of the noodles and it was still too much and overwhelmed the dish. It felt like something was missing perhaps the addition of water chestnuts or leeks would have improved it. This recipe had 534 calories and it took about ten minutes more than the recipe stated which was forty minutes.

November Seasonal Fruit Selection

I was so happy to see that they changed the selection of weekly fruit this week. It's a nice change to have pears and pomegranate. Included in the box were one russet pear, one anjou pear, one pomegranate, one fuji apple and two red delicious apples. The apples arrived ripe and the pears and pomegranate took a couple days to ripen.

While this week of recipes wasn't our favorite, we enjoyed giving these recipes a try and look forward to next week's recipes. Yesterday, we received the following recipes and all their ingredients:
  1. Thyme & Rosemary Roasted Pork Tenderloin
  2. Double Decker Poblano Tostadas
  3. Blueberry BBQ Salmon
  4. Fall Detox Smoothie
  5. Gift - Vosges Black Salt Caramel Bar
