This is a review of the 11th box we have purchased from Plated, a food subscription box that costs $72 for three recipes & all of the ingredients needed for two people. I'm sad to report this is the worst box we have received so far from them. I ordered it because of the Turkish meal, Beef Gozleme with Tahini & Roasted Carrots. We absolutely love Turkish food and since relocating we really miss our favorite Turkish restaurant, so I just had to order it. Out of the three recipes we give the Sausage, Summer Squash & Corn Stir-Fry with Basil & Sweet Peppers first place, second place goes the the Chicken Avocado Burger and last place definitely goes to the Beef Gozleme.

Sausage, Summer Squash & Corn Stir-Fry with Basil & Sweet Peppers

This recipe was pretty good, I just wish there had been more of it. It was more of a lunch sized portion. The corn and basil weren't in great shape, so parts of them had to be thrown out, so that did reduce some of the quantity. Since when did they start putting the herbs in a sealed white mailing envelope? Bad idea! I couldn't stop shaking my head in disbelief when I pulled that out of the box. This is the company that normally sends produce in special green bags that reduce the gasses that produce make hence allowing them to stay fresh longer! So why go from best to worst? Anyway, we both love squash, zucchini and chicken sausage, so it was very enjoyable to us. It was just that a snack was necessary a few hours later. It came in at about 45 minutes of preparation and 440 calories. Seems like it took too long for quite a simple recipe. Hubby also complained that they gave us too little oregano and red pepper. He added more red pepper and we were out of oregano, so we couldn't add any more of that.

Beef Gozleme with Tahini & Roasted Carrots

This recipe was the most disappointing of all the Plated recipes we have made and yet it was the one that caused me to order this week. Since they don't let you look at the recipe instructions prior to ordering, I didn't realize that they were going to have us make the dough from scratch! That's certainly not something anyone wants to do after a long day at work. Perhaps even more disappointing was the fact that they sent us white flour. I avoid it as much as possible since white flour converts to sugar in your body and it has no nutritional value. Usually I don't have to worry about Plated sending things like that since this is not the norm, so I was quite shocked it wasn't wheat, rye or something other than white flour. The recipe instructions were too brief. The lemon on the carrots caused it to burn during baking and made quite a mess to clean up on the baking sheet. There wasn't enough ground beef and too much mint. It should have been lamb or a lamb and beef mix, not just beef since it was suppose to be Turkish. The tahini sauce was a mess. It was too runny and the thin container it was in was damaged during shipping. One word for this recipe: disappointment! This recipe took about one very long hour filled with regret & frustration and had 650 calories.

Chicken Avocado Burgers with Sweet Potato Fries & Aioli

I haven't been ordering much from Plated lately since my favorite is Home Chef, but it appears the quality is going down hill. The buns for this burger were just not the quality I expect from Plated. They are more expensive than their competition, so I expect high quality ingredients. This recipe was just ok, nothing exciting and not a recipe I would repeat. The greek yogurt and mayo were in thin, little containers that were damaged during shipping. This recipe took about 40 mins and had 740 calories. What? 740 calories, why? It had very little flavor. Geez! That dish wasn't worth the calories! Oh my, now that I realize the calorie count, I give it an even lower score.

My Favorite Subscription (as of March 2016 no longer my favorite, went back to Hello Fresh & Plated):

Home Chef and the reasons are:
  1. Having so many recipes to chose from each week: 7 land, 1 seafood, 3 vegetarian, 1 smoothie, 1 breakfast, 1 fruit basket.
  2. Most consistant shipping with the most ice packs (except seafood, don't order during spring & summer.
  3. Recipes are easier, faster and use ingredients that aren't so unusual, some recipes now take much longer than indicated.
  4. Calories vary so you can chose diet food or something for a treat.
  5. Pork, lamb, chicken, beef and steak portions are always a generous portion. Often portions are so generous you'll have leftovers for a snack or lunch (as of Dec '15 they were increasingly smaller, especially the chicken).
  6. Especially enjoy their smoothies, breakfast recipes & fruit basket (kept sending frozen fruit which defrosted and then turned into mush, leaking out of the jars and send brown peaches).
  7. Can order up to 8 meals, but don't order over 5 because they won't increase the size of the box and the ingredients will be damaged.
  8. They deliver via FedEx & they deliver in the morning at my location. You may want to pick one based on what time of day they deliver for the hot summer months or how many ice packs they use (didn't tell anyone they increased free s/h to orders of $40 to $50).
  9. Price and generous referral program.
  10. Fast & generous customer service response when something is missing or damaged which isn't often (last two complaints not one cent of store credit for ingredient issues until I complained twice).
  11. They are not repetitive with the types of produce they send, lately (Dec '15) they have been repetitive.
  12. You have the chance to win four free meals each week just by posting a photo of your recipe results on social media with the hash tag #homechef. I just won this week and I'm super happy to receive the credit! (Update - no longer offered)
My Complaints:

Home Chef - UPDATE since December 2015 there have been serious issues with their chicken, 5 chicken bones were found in the chicken thighs and then later a long chicken bone in the chicken breast. I chipped a tooth on one of the chicken bones that was found in the chicken thighs and they ignored my complaint. Other customers have indicated that they had the entire breast bone still attached to the "boneless chicken breasts". The chicken breasts are at least 1/3 the size they were prior. Also, they have been sending smaller portions of the ground turkey, ground pork, ground beef and salmon. They have said for two months that they are "working on it" and yet no changes have been made. After complaining about yet another chicken bone found their response is "based on your experiences with us, our service has proven not to be a fit for you". They are ok with losing a customer who sent them at least 35 referrals and a customer who ordered every week for 10 months! I had to ask twice for store credit for ingredient issues last week and this week yet again not one cent of store credit only to find this week I received shrimp that turned pink due to the temps being too high during shipping. Update - they called and emailed and gave me a small store credit.

Blue Apron - they repeat produce in the recipes for the week and then week after week into months. Became so sick of fennel, snap peas, pickled foods & other produce they kept repeating that I stopped ordering for months. Too frequently missing items and not enough ice packs. Not enough recipe choices, often there were only two that I liked or it wouldn't allow me to pick the 3rd one I wanted. Beef, lamb, steak, pork, chicken and fish portions are too small. Often left the table not full. Customers have been complaining about portion sizes and they have yet to make any changes. No longer offer store credit for referrals.

Hello Fresh - too few recipes to chose from and often too few ingredients per recipe. Recipes are sometimes very simple and not exciting though they require less preparation time as a result. Shipping without enough gel packs and once one of them leaked and ruined the entire box. Sometimes they send out boxes with leaking meat packages which contaminate the rest of the ingredients. UPS tends to sit the box on it's side due to it's rectangular shape which makes it easy for the leaking blood to travel to the top of the box where the produce is sitting. Shipping is via UPS which doesn't deliver to my location till late in the day which means ingredients are more likely to go bad due to the longer shipping time. Recipe cards don't come with punched holes and are too small for storing in a binder.

Plated - ingredients are often too strange like squid ink pasta. The recipes tend to be more complicated and take longer than the card states. Often the recipe isn't well written and confusing. This becomes increasing frustrating if you are making one of their recipes after a long day at work. They don't allow you to preview the instructions to see if it's something you want to do. No longer offer store credit for referrals.

Well there you have it, my breakdown and comparison of the four subscription boxes. Notice that Plated wins in the taste test followed by Home Chef. Plated came in with 32% five star dishes, Home Chef had 26%, Blue Apron & Hello Fresh both had 12%. The reason I prefer Home Chef over Plated is because the recipes are easier, less time consuming (no longer less time) and the ingredients are more common. If you want more challenging recipes with hard to find & unusual ingredients, then Plated would be a better choice for you. A few suggestions and few more facts: all of the four subscription boxes offer a credit to your account when something is missing or is damaged during shipping. None of them will give you a credit back to your credit card nor ship you a replacement. So I recommend checking your shipment when it arrives in case you need to go shopping for something that you need as a result. Contact via email is the fastest and easiest way to resolve those issues when they occur. Expect one of those issues to occasionally occur due to the fragile nature of the groceries. I don't recommend ordering any seafood during the hot summer months unless you live very close to their warehouse. Be sure to leave produce that isn't ripe out on your counter to ripen and plan to make those dishes later in the week. It's best to make the recipes within five days, but some can last up to seven days. If any produce looks very ripe I would recommend using them within three days. Sometimes the ingredients will last past seven days but it is rare and I don't recommend it, more so likely with the vegetarian dishes. Be sure to alter the recipes to fit your taste with the spices, tasting it before adding all of the spice provided. If on a low salt diet, just skip the salt or add less. Three of them provide recipe cards that are 8 1/2 x 11", double sided and in color. Hello Fresh is the only one that has smaller cards. Home Chef now hole punches their cards so you can place it in a binder of your own. Home Chef occasionally sends out recipe binders to random customers as a gift. Blue Apron is selling binders now, but they are overpriced. Hello Fresh & Plated don't offer binders to hold the cards, but you could hole punch those and put them in a binder yourself. Blue Apron also offers kitchen supplies for sale. I have purchased their cutting board, recipe holder, cutting board oil, pepper and salt and the package arrived in only a couple of days. So I recommend their store since shipping is fast and their products are of high quality. Just make sure you can't find it cheaper somewhere else such as their English salt which can be found at Earth Fare or Whole Foods for much less. Home Chef sent us as a gift of expensive chocolate during the month of November 2015 and on Valentine's Day they send us a sample sized one.

I hope that this chart and information has helped you either to make a decision on which of the four you will subscribe to or for current subscribers to use as a reference sheet. I know I will be referring to it when I can't remember something. So which of the four is your favorite and why? Please comment below! If you have any questions, feel free to ask below. Have fun cooking!

Update - I updated this post with some changes which are highlighted by bold text (March 30th 2016).

This is a review of the 11th box we have received from Home Chef. This week our favorite recipe was the Key Lime Pie Smoothies. Our second favorite was the Dijon & Panko Crusted Chicken, third was the Steak Fajita Bowl, fourth was the Pork Sausage Breakfast Bagel and last place goes to the Fiesta Grilled Chicken.

Key Lime Pie Smoothies with Pineapple, Kale & Graham Crackers

This is the by far our most favorite smoothie recipe they have come up with so far. Wow, was that delicious! It tasted like you blended a piece of key lime pie in your blender which is crazy because the ingredients were pineapple, kale, orange juice, orange, lime and graham crackers! Only the lime and graham crackers are normally used to make key lime pie and yet it tasted just like it. It was a bit tart for us, so we added some honey. Wow, I'm craving it as I type this. This is must repeat recipe for us for sure. Oh how I wish I had the ingredients in the house to make it this very minute! The ingredients are going on my grocery list and we will be making this again very soon. I always find it amazing how kale doesn't change the taste of a fruit smoothie, yet you get all the wonderful nutrition it provides. It only had 205 calories and it took longer than most smoothies, about 15 minutes but it was worth the extra time! This recipe is magical!

Dijon & Panko Crusted Chicken with Roasted Carrots & Garlic Mashed Potatoes

We were in awe and disbelief that these mashed potatoes were the best we have ever had. We make some really good mashed potatoes, but somehow these were so fluffy and even more delicious than any of our own creations. Hubby whipped them by hand and they had a texture that you would swear was made with a mixer! They are simply made with butter, heavy cream, parsley, garlic, salt & pepper and yet so incredibly fluffy and delicious. The carrots were really awesome too! Simply coat the carrots with olive oil, salt and pepper and roast in the oven for 10-12 minutes. Those two sides were heavenly. Hubby loved the chicken made with dijon mustard and panko, but I'm not a big fan of mustard, so I didn't enjoy it as much. This dish had 732 calories and took around 35 minutes to prepare.

Steak Fajita Bowl with Spanish Rice, Black Beans & Sautéed Peppers

This recipe was delicious also. The steak was very moist and tender and the fajita seasoning on it was especially yummy. I was skeptical about making our own tortilla strips, but it was easy and they were very crisp and enjoyable. We would have liked more cheese, sour cream and cilantro. Half a can of black beans per person was too much and there was too much red bell pepper. It was a huge serving and I just realized I forgot to eat my leftovers. It was 678 calories if you ate it all, which I could not, but Hubby did. It took about 35 minutes to prepare.

Pork Sausage Breakfast Bagel with Fluffy Eggs, Cheddar Cheese & Chive Skillet Potatoes

In the picture it showed a bagel with seeds on it, we received just plain bagels. They weren't the quality I have come to expect from Home Chef, so that was disappointing. The eggs weren't great and the tomato was of low quality. Overall, this recipe was a disappointment. The chive skillet potatoes were the best part. This recipe had 486 calories and I only ate half the bagel since I didn't like it and often I will take off the top or bottom bun so that there are less calories and more flavor.

Fiesta Grilled Chicken with Quinoa Pilaf & Pickled Sweet Corn Salad

I didn't realize that this recipe had pickled corn salad or I would not have ordered it. I will pay more attention next time. I can't eat anything pickled since it will cause stomach distress for days up to a month due to IBS, so we skipped that part of the recipe. We both disliked this recipe, we just ate some of it because we were hungry. Mind you, we didn't use the sugar or white wine vinegar, perhaps it would have tasted better pickled. The southwest seasoning was tart, the quinoa had a horrible texture and adding lime to everything made it all tart. There wasn't enough cilantro and the red onion and jalapeño would have tasted better uncooked. This recipe had 613 calories and it took about 45 minutes to make, 10 minutes longer than the recipe indicated. That seems like a lot of calories for what it was.

Well there you have it, a review of our latest Home Chef box which included three really delightful recipes, one that was just ok and one we disliked. This week we received a shipment from Plated instead because they had a Turkish recipe and I haven't been able to find a Turkish restaurant in our new location. We really love Turkish food and since we moved away, we miss the Turkish restaurant we frequented so much. I'm really missing Home Chef's smoothie recipe this week. Next week we will be expecting the following recipes from Home Chef:
  1. Brasserie Style Sirlion Steak with Truffle Frites, Asparagus & Herb Butter
  2. Turkey & Goat Cheese Meatballs with Pesto Spaghetti & Baby Arugula
  3. Raspberry Chia Smoothie with Apple, Yogurt & Honey
  4. Chicken & Cheese Enchiladas with Jalapeño, Corn & Cheese

Amigos Mexican Grill Restaurant Review - King, NC

700 East King St
King, NC  27021
(336) 983-2020

View of Front of Restaurant

Drive Thru Menu (click on photo to enlarge)

Build Your Own Burrito Bowl - $6.50

Chicken Fajita Quesadillas - $6.99

Lettuce, Guacamole & Sour Cream for Fajita Quesadillas

1/3 of the Medium Salsa - $2.75 & Bag of Chips - $.99

King has a new Mexican restaurant in town called Amigos Mexican Grill. They finally opened yesterday after a long wait with no word on when they would open until the day before. They are across from the Sheetz gas station in the building that use to be a BBQ restaurant. They have a drive thru and a seating area inside. We visited today, Saturday, around 1 pm and the parking lot was full of customers' cars and they had a couple of customers at the drive thru.

We ordered at the drive thru menu and thirteen minutes later our food was ready. Hubby ordered the Build Your Own Burrito Bowl and chose grilled chicken, white rice, black beans, fajita veggies, green salsa, shredded cheese and sour cream. I love how they have so many options as you can see in the picture of the menu above. It reminds me of what they offer at Chipotle, which is one of my favorite restaurants. Hubby would have given it a score of four out of five stars if it had been served hot, so it gets three stars instead. Perhaps they were waiting on my dish and his got cold while waiting since mine was quite warm, but I wouldn't say hot. The rice & chicken were cooked well, but the chicken didn't have any spices on it which we found very strange for a Mexican restaurant. The sour cream was cold & fresh. It was a very generous portion especially for lunch. I hadn't noticed they had green salsa or I would have ordered that too. So next time I will order a Burrito Bowl with green salsa.

I ordered the Chicken Fajita Quesadilla which came with lettuce, sour cream and guacamole in a separate container. The 12" quesadilla had only chicken and cheese and the chicken didn't have any spices on it. The guacamole was very tasty & fresh, the lettuce was fresh & crisp and the sour cream was cold. I would have given it four out of five stars, if it had spices on the chicken and some green peppers and onions. So I'd have to give it three stars. Perhaps they will step it up with the spices in the future or the chef made a mistake and it was suppose to have spices. It was a very generous portion, so if you aren't really hungry, skip the chips & salsa.

The salsa had mostly a tomato taste with very little spice. Maybe they have mild, medium and hot choices, I'll ask next time I go. We ordered the medium size which is suppose to be 16 oz and it came in three little cups. One cup is enough for one person. The chips were your standard chips, they were not warm though. They are served in a lunch bag and it's about half full, plenty for one person.

It's nice to have a new drive thru restaurant in King and I always like to support new businesses. Hopefully they will improve on the spices and the temperature of the food as they get use to working as a team. I would say it's worth giving them a try and we will return soon. I'd also like to see the sanitation score displayed on the drive thru window.

UPDATE - They no longer serve breakfast and now open at 11 am for lunch. I went back twice. The first time I was given refried beans instead of black beans. The noise at the intersection makes it difficult to hear at the drive thru. The second time they forgot to put the green salsa on top. Both times the chicken wasn't hot nor have they added spices. Let me know if they start to add spices to the chicken, until then I won't be going back. Their sanitation score is now up and it's 95.

I need restaurant suggestions since we recently moved here. So please comment below! I have several more restaurant reviews in the works, so be sure to stop by again soon. Check out my Restaurant Reviews Pinterest Board which also has restaurants in the Raleigh, Triangle area and Charlotte.

Tacos Oaxaca Restaurant Review - Lillington, NC

1501 South Main Street
Lillington, NC 27546
(910) 893-4927

Front View from Parking Lot

Tostada with Green Chili Sauce $5.49

Two Carne Asada (Steak) Tacos & 1 Chicken $6.00

Chicken Gordita $8.99

Alambre $8.99

Oh me oh my, the food at Tacos Oaxaca is so delicious that after having your first taste you will be craving it soon after and running back for more as soon as you can! As you can see in the first photo, it's a little restaurant. They have a few seats inside and a couple of tables outside. Most customers order their food for take out and eat it at home. Be prepared to wait a full fifteen minutes for your food to be cooked if you are first in line, longer if there are customers in front of you. It is worth every minute of wait time! This is authentic Mexican food, not the Americanized version that so many Mexican restaurants serve these days. Their dishes are packed with flavor and you will be in heaven eating it! I dare you to find any better Mexican food in North Carolina! I haven't found any myself and we use to be regular customers until we moved away. Though, each time we come back to the area for a visit we make time to pick up some more!

My favorite is the Tostadas and they are huge. One takes up the entire styrofoam carry out box. It comes with two sauces and the green one is my favorite which is green chili sauce. I'm not sure what the other one is called, if you know, please comment below. I eat every last drop of the green one, it's so yummy! They describe the Tostada as a flat tortilla that is fried then topped with refried brown bean paste, chicken or steak, chopped lettuce strips, onion, tomato, avocado, cheese, cilantro and sour cream. It's flavor is so heavenly! I'm craving one now as I write this. It's very filling, you may find you can only eat one. If you are really hungry, I'd suggest splitting a second one with a friend or order a taco too. You must give their heavenly Tostadas a try, they aren't greasy at all. Once we went for Tostadas and they sadly ran out of the tortillas. They told us they were waiting for more to arrive from Mexico. We were so disappointed, but we just ordered another yummy dish instead.

My second favorite item is the tacos and we order them with either chicken or carne asada (steak), they are both very good. I usually get at least one of each. They also come with the delicious sauces. In addition to the chicken or steak they add very fresh cilantro, onion, cheese and lettuce or cabbage. Their other options are chorizo (Mexican sausage), al pastor (marinated pork), carnitas (fried pork), lengua (tongue), chicharron (pork skin) or ground beef. You have to give their tacos a try at least once. I find three makes for a very filling serving.

My third favorite is the Sincronizada which they describe as cheese, ham, tomato, jalapeño peppers, avocado and yellow cheese in between two tortillas like a sandwich. I call it a Mexican grilled cheese sandwich! It's serious comfort food. They put a ton of jalapeño in it, so I usually pull a few of those out since my stomach can only handle so much of it. You may find one is enough for a meal or you could order a taco also if you are really hungry. I find the Sincronizada to be very filling.

So there you have it, my latest restaurant review. If you are ever near Lillington which is close to Angier & Fuquay, make sure you drop by Tacos Oaxaca and enjoy their delicious creations! Or perhaps you are headed to Fayetteville from the north, do not forget to stop by at least for a snack! To decide what to order prior to your arrival, check out their full menu by clicking here. Note that they do not sell chips and salsa. He told us that it's because he doesn't have enough room. They are open from 11-7 Monday through Saturday and 11-5 on Sundays. Arrive in plenty of time prior to closing since we have found that sometimes they close early. We have also found that they don't answer their phone, so we have never been able to phone our order in nor check to make sure they are open.
