Peace Manor's Dancing Bears

Check out our dogs dancing for treats!

Our dogs love to dance on their two hind legs for dog cookies and treats.  It's quite simple to train your dog to do. Just hold the treat above them and most dogs will try to reach for it.  Over time most will be able to jump on their hind legs, walk forward and some will be able to walk backwards and in a circle.  Teddy, our Maltese is best at it.  He can walk forward and back and around in circles.  In another video you can see him demonstrate all of those.  What have you taught your dog?

Treats featured in the video are Primal Pet's freeze dried turkey liver treats that my dogs received in their August 2013 BarkBox.  I have over ten healthy dog cookie recipes I came up with featured on this blog.  Check out my Dog Cookie Recipe Pinterest Board to see them all.  When you see one you like, click on the photo and it will take you to the recipe.

Birefringence by I Love Nail Polish

Photo taken in direct sunlight

Watch the video to see the polish change colors

This manicure features a polish called Birefringence made by a company called I Love Nail Polish.  It's a duo chrome polish that changes colors with movement.  Watch the above video to see the color change!  It starts out a dark blue changes to dark purple, then a purply pink, then gold and finally a greenish gold color.  The color change is most dramatic in filtered sunlight.  I took the video during a sunny day near the windows with the light filtering shades closed.  I used two coats of this polish.  It dries quickly, so you need to apply it quickly to avoid streaks.  I suggest going a bit heavy on the first coat.  Also, make sure you use one stroke from the cuticles down to the tips.  I highly recommend this nail polish, it has the most dramatic duo chrome effect I have ever seen.

So there you have it, my latest manicure.  What do you think, do you like it?  I have featured over fifty manicures on this blog.  Take a quick glance at them all on my Pinterest Manicure Board.  Then simply click on the ones you want to read about on my blog, since they are linked to the matching blog post.

Brasa Brazilian Steak House - Raleigh, NC

Interior Decor

Buffet

Rodizio meats served table-side - bacon wrapped chicken, sausage, garlic steak & bacon wrapped filet

This is a review for a restaurant named Brasa Steak House located in Raleigh, NC.  This was my first visit to this restaurant and I will not be returning for a second visit.  The disappointment started from the very beginning of our experience.  The receptionist was very cold and unfriendly.  She walked us to our table, placed ONE menu on the table and walked away.  Never in my life have I been given one menu for two people!  I receive better service from cheap restaurants and this one is expensive.  Normally the receptionist would wait till you are seated and then hand a menu to each person seated at the table before walking away.  We ordered off the lunch menu the "Gold" service for $19.95 per person.  It featured unlimited salad & appetizer bar and four Rodizio meats as shown above.  The only food I liked were the mashed potatoes, curry chicken, bacon wrapped filet and the dinner rolls.  We had to wait quite a bit before the meat was brought out.  My Diet Pepsi was watered down since it was sitting in a pitcher with ice that melted and it lost it's fizz.  Everyone who worked there seemed to hate their job and while the decor was wonderful, the attitudes of the employees made for a very unpleasant atmosphere.  I am very glad that I had not gone at dinnertime when the price jumps to $39.95.  Frankly, we do not go to restaurants that are this expensive very often, so I expect exceptional service and a wonderful experience.  This restaurant was disappointing to say the least and left us both with upset stomachs.   Their restaurant grade was 93. We will stick to Melting Pot as our special occasion restaurant!  What are your favorite restaurants in the Triangle?  Please comment below!  Stay tuned for my review of Kanki which is one of my favorite restaurants.  I also updated my An New World Cuisine review with new photos and more information.

Love with Food - September 2013

This is a monthly subscription service from a company called Love with Food for $10 plus $2 shipping per month. The snacks in this month's box were chosen by Chef Ming Tsai and he chosen only gluten free snacks.  Included in the September shipment were the following snacks:
  1. Good Boy Organics - Organicasaurus baked organic corn snack
  2. Bare Fruit - 100% Natural Crunchy Cinnamon Apple Chips
  3. YumEarth Organics - organic fruit snacks
  4. Betty Lou's - all natural & gluten free blueberry fruit bar
  5. Cosmos Creations - cinnamon crunch
  6. Wild Garden - hummus dip
  7. Milas Foods - roasted pepper & artichoke bruschetta
  8. Millies Savory Teas - sipping broth teas
  9. Licious Organics - cherry berry raw cookie
Hubby decided to try the corn snack first.  He says it tastes just like a sugary cereal he use to eat as a child. Next he tried the blueberry fruit bar and he says it's very similar to Fig Newtons.  He really like it a lot.  Next in the taste test was the hummus dip.  Hubby liked it, but didn't find it any different than his current brand.  We both tried the fruit snacks and we agreed some flavors were good and others not so good.  They tasted very sugary, a bit too sweet for me.  My dog, Leo who samples a little bit of most foods I eat, rejected it.  There are very few foods he will reject!  We look forward to trying the bruschetta, but will have to wait until we purchase bread to put it on.  I'm a bit confused about the teas, I've never heard of sipping broth teas.  I need to look into what that is all about.  John also liked the cinnamon crunch.  I'm not all the crazy about and tried it in a previous box. I didn't care for the apple chips.  I ate a couple and threw out the rest.  I'd prefer a fresh apple. We really enjoy this subscription, but find it difficult to find the products they feature in stores.  To get your own box for $5 off, use coupon code "FBFRIEND" and click here.

Check out what we received in previous boxes:

Birchbox - September 2013

Heritage

This is a monthly cosmetic subscription box from a company called Birchbox.  The box includes around five samples per month for only $10 which includes shipping. The retail value of this box is $36.76.  Bargain! Included in my September box were the following products:
  1. Borracha - Pearly Wipes, 2 packets, $1.06 retail value
  2. Paula's Choice - spot corrector from blackheads to wrinkles, sample size, $4.25 value
  3. Davines - This Is a Sea Salt Spray, travel size, $10.80 value
  4. Elizabeth Arden - Beautiful Color Luminous Lip Gloss in the color Precious Petal, travel size, $10.65 value
  5. Ruffian - Nail Lacquer in the color Fox Hunt, full size, $10.00 value
This is my favorite box from Birchbox so far.  I like everything in it!  I will try the pearly wipes and spot corrector soon.  The sea salt spray gives my fine straight hair a nice wave at the bottom of my shoulder length hair.  It's perfect for humid days, since my hair will not hold a heat produced curl here in the south during the hot & humid summers.  It smells good like vanilla.  Unfortunately, it's a bit flaky and drying.  I have tried four different beach sprays and my favorite is Sexy Hair Beach Spray.  The lipgloss is a very pretty nude pink color with fine gold glitter.  It smells like vanilla cake and it's very moisturizing and not sticky at all.  It looks like more of a metallic glimmer than a gloss.  The nail lacquer looks more red and metallic in the bottle than it does on the swatch I did. It's more of an orange red and it only requires one coat!  I always do two, even if it is opaque in one coat because I always want to make sure I didn't miss any spots and it's evenly spread.  It's the perfect color for Fall.

Check out what I received in previous Birchboxes:

Little Black Bag - August 2013

Hello Kitty Face Wallet

Deux Lux Sahara Messenger

Betsey Johnson Animal Fade Wayfarer Sunglasses

Welcome to the world of Little Black Bag!  This is the story of my latest trading experience on their shopping website.  Simply put, you purchase one item on their website at a discount and for an extra charge that is usually around $10, they add two more items to your bag.  Then you're off to trade with other shoppers for seven days.

Starting Bag:
  1. Deux Lux Sahara Messenger, $110 retail value
  2. Robert Rose Geometric Drop Earrings, $16 value
  3. Meta Traders Braid Bracelet, $24 value
  4. Michael Todd True Organics Pumpkin Mask, free deluxe sample
I chose to open my bag with the Deux Lux Sahara Messenger Bag for $65.90 including shipping. I started out trading the $16 Robert Rose Geometric Drop Earrings for the $18 1st Aid Beauty Dual Repair Eye Cream.  That increased my bag value $2.  Then I traded the $18 cream for the $20 Carol Dauplaise Pull Through Circle Drop Earrings, increasing the value another $2.  Then I traded those $20 earrings for the $24 Rain Filigree Earrings increasing it another $4.  Those earrings wouldn't trade well, so I traded down $1 to the $23 Michael Marcus Eye Shadow.  That wasn't trading well either, so I traded down again $1 to the $22 Catherine Stein Designs Circle Stud Earrings.  Then I managed to trade up again $2 to the $24 Mata Traders Braided Bracelet which I knew was trading well.  Trading for the 3rd item in my bag went as follows:  I traded up $1 for the $25 Catherine Stein Designs Spiral Earrings.  They were trading well and I had my eye on the hair ties, so I traded down $1 for the Jolie Crystal Hair Ties.  Then I traded up $2 with both the $24 Jolie Hair Ties and the $24 Mata Traders Braided Bracelet for the $50 Betsey Johnson Animal Fade Wayfarer Sunglasses.  I added the Hello Kitty Face Wallet to my bag for $25.95 since I didn't want to open another bag.  It was less expensive than any other store.

Finished Bag:
  1. Deux Lux Sahara Messenger, $110 retail value
  2. Betsey Johnson Animal Fade Wayfarer Sunglasses, $50 value
  3. Hello Kitty Face Wallet, $45 value
  4. Michael Todd True Organics Pumpkin Mask, free deluxe sample

Starting bag had a retail of $150 and I finished with a bag worth $160 (not including the free sample), before adding the Hello Kitty Face Wallet.  While I found trading frustrating at first, I managed to only pay $10 extra for the $50 sunglasses.  I had seen and tried on those sunglasses at Nordstrom Rack just a few days prior and they were around $35.  When I average out the three items I bought, it calculated to $30.61 for each item which is a good value.  Not nearly as large of a savings as I have had in previous bags, but I really wanted that elephant bag so much. The trade offers were incredible on that one, but I couldn't trade it!  When my box arrived, I was very pleased with every item.  I have worn the elephant bag many times and love it so much!  It reminds me of something you would find while on vacation that you just couldn't pass up because it is so unique.  The quality is very good and it couldn't be prettier!  I highly recommend Little Black Bag, just remember it's highly addictive!  I explain how Little Black Bag works in greater detail in previous posts, so be sure to check them out, links below.

Goodies Co Taster's Box - August 2013

This is a monthly subscription box from Goodies Co for only $7 per month including shipping.  Included in August's box were the following snacks:
  1. Snyder's - Veggie Chips
  2. Morris National Inc - Tangy Zangy Twisties sour wild fruit
  3. Orion - One & Only Cookie Crackers
  4. Barnie's Coffee - Pronto! Hawaiian Hazelnut instant coffee
  5. Ojo Nectar - Mango Blackcurrant Fruit Juice for eye health
  6. Rocky Mountain Popcorn - Poplets
I enjoyed the taste of the Veggie Chips, but it upset my stomach.  The Twisties were too sweet for our taste. Hubby did not like the Cookie Crackers at all, so I didn't give them a try.  I don't drink coffee and Hubby doesn't like instant coffee, so he wont be tasting that.  Poplets was tasted by Hubby and he said it was awful.  It looked awful, so I didn't try it.  It looks like the pieces that you would reject and throw away.  We haven't tried the fruit juice yet.  I stuck it in the refrigerator and forgot about it.  This month's box was the least favorite so far. Hopefully next month will be better.

We enjoy this subscription and look forward to the October box.  What's your favorite snack subscription service? I have reviewed many different subscription boxes on this blog.  To see them all check out my Subscription Box Pinterest Board.  Any that you would like more information on, just click on the photo and it will take you to the matching blog post.

Ipsy - September 2013

Classic Beauty

This is a monthly subscription service from a company called Ipsy.  Each month you receive around five cosmetics and a makeup bag for only $10 per month with free shipping. The retail value of my September bag is $34.48.  What a bargain!  Included in my September package were the following products:
  1. Skyn Iceland - Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels, 2 pairs, $7.50 retail value
  2. Starlooks - Kohl Eye Pencil in the color K01 Obsidian, full size, $12 value
  3. J.Cat Beauty - Fantabulous Lipstick in the color FL107 Honeycrisp, full size, $2.49 value
  4. NYX - Eyeshadow in the color ES29 Deep Charcoal, full size, $4.50 value
  5. Elizabeth Mott - It's So Big Volumizing Mascara, travel size, $7.99 value
I will be using the eye gels later today.  They go under the eyes.  I prefer the type that u lay over the entire eye since my eyelids get puffy more than the area under my eyes does.  I really recommend the ones from Wei East. Place them in the refrigerator before use and they are very soothing and cooling.  I will be selling the eye pencil, lipstick and eyeshadow in my Blog Sale.  Check it out if you would like to purchase one of those.  I look forward to trying out the mascara, but it will be going to the back of the line.  I have many mascaras waiting to be used first.  I wasn't very excited about this shipment, the prior ones were so much better.  I preferred my Birchbox this month.  That blog post will be up shortly, so be sure to check back to see what I received.

Mugler Addict - Summer 2013

This is a new subscription box called Mugler Addict from Thierry Mugler for $50 a year.  The boxes are sent out in the Summer, Fall, Winter & Spring, so that makes each box cost only $12.50 each.  Included in the first box, which is the summer box, are the following products:
  1. Alien Aqua Chic - perfume sample, $1.70 retail value
  2. Mugler Cologne - eau de Toilette, $12.50 value
  3. Angel - perfuming body lotion, $7.85 value
  4. Angel Aqua Chic - perfume sample, $2 value
  5. Angel - Eau de Parfume Shooting Star, $12.50 value
  6. Magma Lip Lacquer - lip gloss in the color Shimmer Blue, $35 value
The retail value of this box is $71.55, wow!  What a bargain!  If you like the Mugler brand, you need to sign up for this subscription now.  The lip lacquer goes on as a clear lip gloss with fine glitter.  Then shortly after it turns to a lovely pink color!  When the lip gloss wears off, you still have a nice pink lip stain on your lips.  I love this lip lacquer!  It has a clear rubber tip and as you turn the bottom part it clicks and the lip lacquer comes out of a small hole in the rubber tip.  I love both Alien & Angel fragrances, so I'm always happy to receive those!  The perfuming body lotion feels great and has a lot of fragrance in it, so the scent lasts unlike most fragrance lotions. I'm not crazy about the cologne, it's suppose to be for either men or women, but it doesn't smell that great to me. All their products are made in France. I can't wait to see what they send me in the fall!  Also, when I signed up I received a lovely hand written note welcoming me and offering me concierge services and free shipping all year long.

So there you have it, my latest subscription box find.  Are you going to subscribe?  I have reviewed many different subscription boxes on this blog.  To see them all check out my Subscription Box Pinterest Board.  Any that you would like more information on, just click on the photo and it will take you to the matching blog post.

Scofflaw Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Manicure

Photos taken in the sunlight

This manicure features an Indie nail varnish from Scofflaw called Whiskey Tango Foxtrot aka WTF.  I used four coats, but you could easily get away with three. I was having a hard time getting the larger glitter near the cuticles so I went with a fourth coat.  I recommend rolling the bottle and letting it sit upside down overnight before using it.  That is something I thought of after applying the polish.  Next time I will definitely do that. Maybe even shake it really hard a few days prior.  The glitter was sticking to the bottom a lot, especially the larger glitter.  This nail polish features a teal jelly base with various sizes and shapes of red, white, brown and gold glitter.  I purchased this polish along with several other Indie polishes from Llarowe, check out my nail polish haul here.

So there you have it, my latest manicure.  What do you think, do you like it?  I have featured over fifty manicures on this blog.  Take a quick glance at them all on my Pinterest Manicure Board.  Then simply click on the ones you want to read about on my blog, since they are linked to the matching blog post.

BarkBox - August 2013

Teddy sleeping on his whale toy after playing fetch

This is monthly subscription service for dogs called BarkBox.  It comes in three different sizes and prices range from $19-29 depending on how many months you sign up for.  Get your first box for $5 off by using my link here.  Our dogs received this box free from a giveaway by Everyone Loves a Treasure.  Be sure to drop by and check out her blog!  Included in the August box for dogs under 20  pounds were the following products:
  1. Primal Pet - freeze dried turkey liver treats
  2. Barkworthies - soft hickory meat treats
  3. Quaker Pet Group - whale squeaky toy that only dogs can hear
  4. Barkworthies - ground bully stick flakes to sprinkle on their dinner
  5. The Honest Kitchen - Ice Pups treat mix to freeze in an ice tray or as a warm broth
Our four dogs (two Maltese & two Shih-Tzu) usually like freeze dried treats.  Though they are not fond of soft treats.  They also love bully sticks and they chew on them daily.  We get them from DoggyLoot, the least expensive place I have found to buy them.  It will be interesting to see how they react to the flakes on their dinner.  My dogs reject cold treats that are frozen.  I find mostly puppies like something cold or big dogs.  I'll try it as a broth on top of their dry Solid Gold Hundenflocken kibbles.  We put low sodium chicken broth on top every night along with chicken breast and/or green beans.  Our dogs are always excited to get a new toy and one of them, Teddy, insists on playing fetch daily.  Our dogs like BarkBox the most out of all the dog subscription boxes they have tried.

Included in the March box were the following:

  1. Little Eatz - peanut butter cookies
  2. Feel Good Treats - liver treats
  3. Lolly Cadoddle mouse - handmade by artisans in Nepal made of wool
  4. Harry Barker - bone toy made with eco-friendly fibers, recycled plastics
  5. Angie's List - doggie bag bone container and discount code "BARK 45" for 45% off
I gave the Little Eatz cookies to the SPCA since they have wheat in them and one of my four dogs can't have wheat, it makes him sick.  My dogs eat the Feel Good Treats only when they see that I'm not giving them anything better.  My dogs really prefer my handmade dog cookies and you can find the recipes on this blog here. They played with the mouse and the bone a little bit, but I had a blast scaring my hubby by throwing the mouse at him and screaming "mouse".   It's really hard to scare him, so that was fun.  Since my dogs have a ton of toys after buying nine of these boxes and since I make their dog treats, we decided to give it a break for now.  This is their favorite dog subscription box though and they highly recommend it.  What's your favorite dog subscription box?

Check out what they received in their previous BarkBoxes:

KLUTCHclub - August 2013

This is a monthly subscription box for $18 including shipping from a company called KLUTCHclub.  I received an email recently that I would be receiving a box.  I contacted them and told them I had not resubscribed and cancelled over a year ago.  They told me if I had cancelled to ignore the email and then this box arrived.  I checked my credit card account and I was not charged.  Maybe it's a loyalty reward or they made some crazy mistake, they don't even seem to know which is unsettling.  They send 9-12 health & fitness products worth $50 each month.  Included in the August box were the following products:
  1. Nawgan - Alertness Beverage in Mandarin Orange
  2. Flavrz - Organic Drink Mix
  3. PowerBar - Performance Energy in Apple, Mango & Strawberry
  4. PowerBar - Performance Engery in Blueberry & Banana
  5. Good Greens - Soy Greek Yogurt Bar in Blueberry Bliss
  6. Botanical Interests - Wheatgrass seeds (2 packs)
  7. Puritan's Pride - Raspberry Ketones, 30
  8. Beanfields - Bean & Rice chips, salt 'n pepper flavor
  9. Waves Gear - $25 gift card
  10. Bistro MD - $75 off any program
  11. Delight Gluten Free Magazine - Summer 2012
We tried the Bean & Rice chips first and they were really good.  A bit strong without the addition of salsa.  Hubby tried the Banana & Blueberry PowerBar, which is an apple sauce type of product and he said it's really good.  We haven't had a chance to try the other products yet.  The seeds, box and the magazine had something that looked like melted chocolate on them.  But nothing in the box is made with chocolate and nothing leaked, so that was strange.  The gift cards require that you purchase something, so the Bistro one would cost at least $54.95 for five days worth of food.  While it sounds like a good deal, I'm reluctant to try a company I haven't heard anything about before.  The lowest priced sunglasses are $30, so it would cost $5 plus shipping with the gift card.  They aren't my style, so I'll be passing on that.  There are several coupons in the box also:
  1. Puritan.com - free shipping with a $25 order, code "KLUTCHB"
  2. Goodgreens.com - 50% with code "KLUTCH2013"
  3. PowerBar.com - 15% off & free shipping on orders over $29, code "BLENDSKLUTCH"
Another blogger calculated the value of this box at $31.87 without the gift cards and coupons.  It appears she received more product than I.  I'm missing the Espresso Bar and 4 of the drink mixes.  I had cancelled this box back in June 2012 since it included more coupons and gift cards than samples.  I see they have stepped it up a bit, but it's still not worth $50 unless you include the coupons and gift cards.  Also, after having a difficult time using one of the gift cards, I decided it was enough and cancelled. Check out the last box I received here.
